After spending the first friday indoors for a long time last night i was pleased to find that atleast one game had survived the tv schedule, and an impressive display it was indeed. Forest played some superb football against a side i would class to play the nicest stuff out of the prem. Their display against w.brom got me thinking about our realistic chances of promotion this season and our overall style of play. At one point forest had the ball for about 2-3 minutes, nice and quick passing football. i cant remember the last time i saw the blades do this. I eventually came to the conclusion that promotion simply isnt going to happen. Newcastle are far too strong and the players they have will definately win this league. After watching Forest last night, (now im fully aware of the fact we should have beaten them at bramall lane, but....we didnt), they have to be taken seriously as a contender with west brom for second. we all know ours and blackwells track record in the playoffs. That shower of a game against burnley proved to me we are not a big game club and blackwell is not a big game manager. the top 3 are 11 points away from us now and this angers me that the majority of people are accepting this. blackwells on his 2nd/3rd squad with us now and we still cant get it right. we were terrible for most of leicester and got a jammy goal against a preston side who then sacked their manager after that game. he's had atleast 3 mill to spend this season - and has a good wage bill. im sorry, but 7th isnt good enough at the half way point - we should be challenging. we have w.brom, newcastle and forest away this season now. we took 2 from a possible 9 at home against these and its a sad state of affairs but i think people would be really happy with the same return on the away games. Promotion is quickly becoming nothing but a pipe dream for our club.

Should have beaten forest you say, so we were better than them?
Totally outplayed PNE great football and you class us as lucky?
Can you please point out the times when we've been unlucky?

Agree with that boo + we should have got more from the games with WBA ( 2 x bad defensive errors from Killa) and Newcastle - no one could legislate for that deflection.

We are not far from being abloody good side - provided we can get a settled side and stay free of injury again. The style is changing as people get used to each other - as it did last season when we played some cracking stuff. It takes time - look how shit Forest were last season theyve benefitted from a settled side this season and adjusted the style.

I thought we were Shite against Leicester and preston recently, unlucky against a mediocre forest side ok against WBA and ok against the flooky geordies ( nowt you can do about a deflection ).
Don't forget the great saves the newcastle keeper made.
Still think we are on track tho' for my prediction of mid-table mediocrity.

Wasn't everyone saying the same last season though? You caught Forest last night on a very good day and a bad day for WBA. What did you make of Forest when they drew 0-0 at the Lane a few weeks ago?

Bold bit bollocks.

I have to agree we're playing poorly most of the time, but hey 7th is bloody good for a team that's playing poor. If Blackie ever gets his tactics right and we get rid of all these injuries and we keep Killa, you never know somebody might be in for a towzing.
One thing we're not going to do is spend.

Agree but who is going to spend in our league?

Apart from Forest and WBA I can't see too much being thrown around.

I've stated this loads of times but it is still relevant. Throughout all our home games I am yet to see a side that I thought was head and shoulders about us. That's not saying teams haven't outplayed us, they have, but I am still 100% that if we hit form and play to our potential we are easily one of the top 6 sides.
I have yet to see us play well for 60 mins and yet we are 7th. That's despite our depleted squad through injuries, we just need some form.

Probably because we never have and dont expect us to anytime soon.

"We are not far from being abloody good side - provided we can get a settled side and stay free of injury again. The style is changing as people get used to each other"

what did you actually see from the leicester or the preston game that give solid support to whats been said there? - We were outplayed by leicester for large parts, we didnt play any nice stuff and the goal against preston was flukey goal and we werent that impressive.

with regards to what i thought of Forest when we played them at the lane. as ive already said - we should have beaten them. and this is exactly my point. we didnt and thats why there doing so well. we lack the cutting edge to win these games. there is now way we could go to w.brom and do what forest did last night with this side.

dont get me wrong, i want us to do well and would love this squad to come good but i just dont see this happening.

:D

i've got a tenner on the Blades for promotion !

yer all negative buggers....doom an bloody gloom.

<Gasps> Sheffield United in 'not Real Madrid' shocker...!???

As recent examples, Stoke didn't play great football but got up and stayed there, so did Hull, so will Birmingham, and in their many TV appearance, I've yet to see Newcastle play anything other than hoofball into Andy Carroll this season. Pretty football is nice to see but it doesn't directly correlate to success.

.....I've yet to see Newcastle play anything other than hoofball into Andy Carroll this season.......

I'm not sure about Newcastle just hoofing it to Carroll. They also pass it to Nolan for him to flatten anybody who comes near him in a steamroller stylie. And then they get booked for having the temerity to come within ten feet of Nolan's big fat arse. Then Nicky Butt has a gripe to the ref, because he's going bald and is bitter about it.

I don't think the style of play has anything to do with us going up or not. For me, the squad as it is just isn't strong enough to be promoted.

We might sneak the play-offs because the majority of the league is poor, but I don't think we'll go up.

Seems you want to pick and choose to prove a point.
EG flukey goal for us against PNE
But did Newcastle score a flukey goal against us when we deserved a least a point?
Did Donny score a flukey goal against us in there 1 attack in the game?
Now most on here admit we are not playng well but as Flat Bob said were 7th and not playing well.
You be down about that if you want and i'm sorry your glass is half empty. Mine is half full:p:p

The optimists think we haven't hit form, the pessimists think that we're just not very good. Sadly, I'm with the pessimists. Having said that, if we replace Evans with Henderson when fit and keep Camara up front, break up the incredibly dull Monty / Quinn (ie drop Quinn) midfield and involve Williamson / Harper more, there's still hope.

I don't think we're very good, but I don't think you have to be to make the play-offs. Let's just hope we make the best of what we've got.

Agreed. We're not great but with a full strength XI we're still capable of the playoffs.

As Brum have shown, you can be utter ditchwater in the Champ, but make a go of it in the Prem.

Speaking of which - Brum 1-0 ManUre. :)
