We have a problem with Cooper

Yes but dont forget hes the worst keeper in the Championship according to some stattos on here
For a lot of this season he has been poor (for whatever reason) - the clean sheets % stats are boosted by a record number of clean sheets last season. Overall he has a high % of clean sheets during his time here, but this season (at least until recently, haven’t checked the stats for a couple of weeks) he has been one of the worst championship keepers this season. It’s possible for both of those things to be true simultaneously. This is the biggest issue with looking solely at the stats, they can easily be manipulated to suit whatever point you’re looking to make, the stats are highly useful but only when used in the right way

It also hasn't helped by the amount of work he is getting through every game especially earlier in the season but even as recent as Pompey, they managed to get 8 shots on target vs our 3. The Ipswich away game where the team conceded 5, there were 11 shots on target. It's defiantly helped when you have a settled defence and midfield in front of you.

A few comparisons on here are a bit apples & oranges - for example, comparing Coops with Deano when he played for us in the Prem, and we conceded bucketloads, isn't really appropriate.

The most relevant comparisons are the goals prevented stats compared to other Champ keepers.

Last season, Coops was 5th-ranked in the Championship with an overall rating of almost 6 full goals total saved compared to an average keeper.

For much of this season Coops has consistently ranked as the worst in the Championship, 23rd or 24th, with as many as 8 goals total more conceded than the average keeper.

In the last 3 or 4 games his stats have turned around dramatically - he is now ranked 19th overall for the season with just 4.5 total goals more conceded than average.

If he continues with his current form - then he will rapidly climb back up the rankings - he personally prevented about 2.4 goals with the clean sheet at Pompey alone.

The sudden turnaround in form and consistency suggests that he has now got over some niggling injury.

Coops' kicking, however, is still substandard. In particular, his kicking of a ball rolling towards him is dreadful (especially with his left foot) in that he consistently hits under the ball and balloons the ball high in the air. (Boro's second goal!). His kicking of a dead ball is much better. The reason is that a rolling ball tends to roll up your foot when kicked, and has to be struck slightly higher up its perimeter.

Overall, though, he is a young keeper who has all of the attributes to mature into a top quality Premier League keeper.

UTB & FTP!

100% would have Henderson over cooper! regardless of what age! Henderson is by far the better GK!
Is that you Dean? 😄

In all seriousness, yeah we all would, currently England's 2nd keeper (not far off No1) 🤔

Compare Henderson and Cooper at the same age. Thankfully the 1 positive is that we own Cooper rather than have Henderson on loan

I would say that Cooper of last season is at the same standard of Henderson. He made so few mistakes and did everything that is expected of him. Where Henderson beats him is in his two Guinness World Records:

1) Fastest time to dress as a goalkeeper (49.51 seconds).
2) Most football-headed passes in one minute (team of two).

Google it!

Coops ongoing poor form throughout this season (interspersed with the odd decent game tbf) is starting to rub my rhubarb. Would we have lost with Rushworth in our net tonight and Cooper in theirs?

I really hope we bring in a top keeper in the summer. Then its on Cooper and the new lad to battle it out. Cooper needs to win that number 1 shirt back for me in the summer. Not blaming him so much for tonight, im just a bit fed up that hes a shadow of the keeper he was, and we arent a charity case to let him play himself back into form over a full season.

I think most of the above comments tonight are from people that watched it at home. If you would have been at the match you’d have been able to witness the velocity of the shot easier. It was like a rocket.

I’m not defending him though, he needs to improve. When was the last time we had a goalkeeper that commanded his area and was decisive.

Defending to blame rather than cooper for me tonight. Personally don’t buy that he’s injured, more just a drop off in form. Doesn’t really seem to have a problem springing about for certain saves he makes.

We had one last season. Cooper. Unfortunately, hes not turned up again for this one.

I agree it is worrying cooper seems to have gone a bit shit this season, I think we’ve been spoilt by some great keepers in the past so it makes it harder to deal with ie they usually get better with us not worse. Hope he turns it around….

Take your point but it's the same speed on the telly!

I’d argue he’s in the top 3 of our current problems
I’d argue you’re possibly right. But I think our two biggest issues are defensive naivety and a lack of cohesion, and our end product.

Defensively - Seriki gets into poor positions; Bindon and Tanganga between them can’t handle abrasive forwards; Burrows lack pace; overall they just don’t really complement each other or really work together defensively especially well.

End product - I like both of them but O’Hare and Seriki especially. They create so many openings for themselves but Seriki probably has a 1/10 success rate when he reaches the by-line and Callum O’Hare fares a bit better but he just never seems to strike the ball cleanly. It’s depressing to see these two excellent players otherwise get into great positions and it come to nothing more often than not. Give Seriki Burrows’ crossing ability, and O’Hare Hamer’s striking ability and you’re probably looking at two of the league’s best players. As it is, I think the big reason we waste so much good play is because of them. But it’s a conundrum because they also create those chances in the first place.

Then it’s big gap, and probably Cooper’s shot stopping, yeah.

Wes Fodderingham 100% Saves that first goal.. we keep it at 1-0 there we don’t concede the 2nd and we go onto win.

He’s having a wretched season really.

He’s still competent as he is not a Lee Baxter, Simmo, George Long, Grbic or Adam Davies .. but in the pecking order of keepers from the last 20 years he’s now slipped below Wes, Moore and Blackman
