We gotta get out of this place

That's why i don't get everybody who says if we go up, we'll come straight back down.
If we had got it right this season, we could well have been in division 2 with the likes of Burton and Walsall or Gillingham. That would give anybody a chance of staying up next season.

Don't hold your breath, I reckon we are five years minimum away from an automatic promotion team.

5 years? No chance! We just need to sign the right players and that could happen over the summer. Of course it might not happen, but to say we need 5 years to build a league one promotion team is ridiculous.

the most frustrating thing is the year we really should've gone up we had a squad more than capable of competing in the championship.

Why ?. 5 years going on 6 and we still haven't built one, why should things change in the summer. Have the board given any indication that they will back the manager when the time comes ?.

Basset transformed a team much worse than the current one in a very short time.

We are fortunate to have so many contracts expiring at the end of the season. We have a great opportunity to start again and get it right.

Bassett in charge next season is he?

Anyway football changed since those days, better players have been forced down the pyramid by the money at the top

We've have five years getting steadily worse, even with a relatively decent amount of money over the last two years and that tap is being turned off.

It's zero hour this summer and starting again almost from scratch with no cash except what we can raise from transfers, so bye Brayford, bye Done, bye Adams.

I'd have laughed in the face of anyone who said we would be in L1 for at least 5 seasons the day we got relegated...

Charlton did it, without breaking the bank. If they can, then so can we.

Is Adkins the man? Hmmm. Hope he can build on yesterday (& the intermittent glimmers over recent weeks) between now & the end of the season. Doubt I'm the only one that needs convincing.

And will we have to sell to raise funds? Hope not, but if that's part of what it takes, then so be it (if, & only if, it's part of the manager's strategy).

, even with a relatively decent amount of money over the last two years and that tap is being turned off.

It is remarkable the amount of people, who in the midst of their rejoicing about the number of contracts expiring, haven't picked up on that point. It's going to take some imaginative wheeling and dealing in the summer to put anything like a decent side together for August.

Isn't that just what managers do though (or should do)? Its a fantastic opportunity for Adkins to construct his own squad. Just got to hope that Lee Turnbull has been earning his corn in the background these last few months.

More of an issue are the players still under contract who he doesn't see as part of the future here. But, one way or another, they need freezing out & moving on.

Ok, so what is the five year plan then? What over the next five years do we need to do get promoted?

We're talking a league where Burton Albion are top, we could easily sign 5 or 6 players in the summer that could make the difference and get us promoted. Do you seriously think that is impossible?

I agree. I haven't seen anything coming from McCabe suggesting some sort of spendfest is happening in the summer, at all. His recent interview didn't say anything of the sort. Everyone is making the following assumptions:

a. We have a lot of non-achievers coming to the end of their contracts in the summer.
b. They will all be released and this will release a ton of readies
c. We will have a shitload of gaps which will be target-filled with quality signings or youngsters shat from nowhere willing to come to a club renowned for achieving fuck all.
d. McCabe is sat on a pot of cash marked 'players' which he will put in with what was released players wages which will enable Adkins to go to the shops without McCabe intervening at all.

Everything doesn't point toward that. What is likely is that three quarters of the expected outward bounders will be re-signed, either Done, Brayford or Sharp will be flogged before the end of the STW and we will be fed the same old bullshit.

Great win yesterday and a much better performance (all three goals were great) but let's not get carried away. We still have McCabe running the show. Expect the unexpected as well as the expected, and even then ... not what you wanted.

Common denominators.

I agree, I doubt anyone thought we would be in League One for as long as we have. But why does the last 5 years of failure mean it will take another 5 years to get promoted?

It is definitely possible to build a team this summer that could win this league, Bristol City and Charlton both did it, so why is that not possible for us?

Because the players we have aren't good enough, and our executive don't seem much arsed at buying talent to replace them.

A new pitch, mind ...

The problem is there IS no long term plan, I fully expect us to start next season with a weaker first team than we end this one with, which will lead to the inevitable scapegoating of the manager and a sacking around November / December when we are 10 or so points off the top two again.

Where is the evidence we have the funds to support this?

Yes. Impossible.

This is League One, look at Burton's squad, we don't need to spend millions.

If you seriously have no optimism about the possibility of promotion over the next 5 years, then I don't know why you would waste your time, money and energy on United.

I think what people are talking about is automatic promotion. I don't think we will trouble the top two places next season or even the the season after that.

We may be in around the lower play off spots as we are now.

When you see teams like Oldham from yesterday it does give me confidence that we won't be fighting relegation in this division anytime soon.

How anybody can say we can't build a promotion team next year or the year after is beyond me after watching some of the small budgeted clubs do it in previous years. That is plain and utter nonsense, of course we have a chance of promotion, we might even get it this year or shall we just give up altogether. Very defeatist.

I'm not saying it will definitely happen but I can't see why anyone can say we definitely won't do it either.

With the clubs we are competing against, going up as champions is definitely possible. This isn't the championship where clubs are regularly spending millions on players. The team at the top of this league have Stuart Beavon up front FFS!

The problem with so many players being out of contract is we somehow have to sign quite a few to build a team/squad . Given recent acquisitions (with the odd exception) and the reluctance to "flash the cash" on actual decent players to get is out of this tinpot league , were might not get the calibre of player we are all hoping for , the board and manager will have the excuse of "they need time to gel" etc . Unless they grasp the nettle and really seize the opportunity that's been afforded them ie so much dross out of contract , I fear at least another season down here !! Hope I am proved wrong . As ever UTB !

So it's 'all or nothing', eh?

Looking across enviously at Burton does us no good whatsoever. We don't have their squad (which contains more talent than ours), we used to have their manager. Their board are happy for them to play their games in a shed and on a cowfield as long as the talent is retained. They play in front of crowds almost a third of ours at the best. The payoff for that is they are top.

You can spoon optimism and hope on the situation as much as you want. We have had five consecutive years in this division where our playing staff has become depleted of true footballing ability and our executive show no signs of executing a pledge they made three years ago when all of us believed that bringing a Saudi businessman on board was the manna from heaven. All it was, was a mitigation for a failing business run by a cretin whom many still think is a Unitedite and has the club's best interests at heart. And they think he is much arsed about putting cash into the club, over and above an investment this season of between £4-8 million for which there is nothing at all to see as investment.

We are fucked.

ps. I waste time and energy (and loyalty) on united. Geographically, it's impossible for me to spend real money on the club.

We're already paying out the finds to support this. The fact that we spunk not on shite is the issue. Release the shite, invest wisely.

Transfer fees are not the be all and end all they once were.

None of this means it will happen, but it's perfectly possible.
