Wombwell - keep up the good work and ignore the knockers. You have a method which others may or may not agree with - let them do their own posts if they don't like it. For me personally yours is a refreshing antidote to the Blackwell knockers.

If your cup is always half empty its hard for these pessimists to accept any statistics to that show things aren't going too bad.

Wombwell, I like the stats thing, even if Implied doesn't.

It seems a reasonable logic. Keep it up

Thanks for the support chaps and chapettes; for the record, I don’t think this is perfect but it does give a sense of where we are at. Apologies for the dig at ‘Implied’ and his spelling – it wasn’t needed! :)

Comparing our results to last season's corresponding results to see how we improve/fall back. Obviously some sides will improve, others will decline but it should even out and give us an idea of where we're heading.

With Wolves, Birmingham and Burnley in the Premiership, I used their league positions to swap them with the relegated Premiership teams, i.e. Newcastle were 18th in Premier League so replace Wolves. Ditto with the promoted clubs from League 1 and replacing the relegated teams.

Therefore: Newcastle = Wolves; Middlesbrough = Birmingham; West Brom = Burnley; Leicester = Norwich; Peterborough = Southampton; Scunthorpe = Charlton.

Last season: we finished with a goal difference of +25 and 80 points.

Two good performances that gained 4 points – and maybe deserved 6 points – in a week mean we are now on course to match last season’s points tally should we match last season’s results against the same opponents. With two away games – that last season yielded a solitary point – to come, we have a chance to put some real pressure on the top six ahead of the Transfer Window and a run of games which we won last season. Thought United were effective in both games and nullified the threat of both Forest and Palace well. A little composure and we could have beaten Forest and thrashed Palace for me.

Our current predicted record would (in the last ten seasons) would have seen us finish in the following places:

Champions: 0
2nd: 1
3rd: 3
4th: 4
5th: 2
6th: 0
Out of Play Offs: 0
Bottom Half: 0
Relegated: 0

The 2nd place would have come in the 07/08 season which was the season where it was ridiculously tight (with Stoke finishing 2nd on 79 points) but it doesn’t look likely that Newcastle and West Brom will end up scrambling towards 80 points. A finishing position of 2nd to 5th would be acceptable to most fans I suspect and – although this thread is by no means scientific fact (!) – that’s where we’re heading right now.

We took ten points from the next five games but we have to be fancying our chances of taking ten again with confidence up and injuries clearing further. Let’s hope we do.

UTB!

It literally takes five minutes. All I am adding each time is the next fixture, the score, check the last ten league tables and see where we'd have been and then add my two-penneth. Honestly, it takes very little time!

Merry Christmas to all; hope you’ve had a good one.

 West Brom A --- 0-1 | -- -- | -- --

Same outcomes at QPR and Leicester as we got last season (at QPR and Norwich who were replaced by Leicester) so no changes to our predicted totals and potential finishes. General consensus seems to be we could have gone and won the game at Loftus Road with some attacking ambition and having visited Walkers Stadium yesterday, it would have been interesting to have seen us start the game with the tactics of the second half.

Our current predicted record would (in the last ten seasons) would have seen us finish in the following places:

Champions: 0
2nd: 1
3rd: 3
4th: 4
5th: 2
6th: 0
Out of Play Offs: 0
Bottom Half: 0
Relegated: 0

The next five fixtures yielded 9 points last season so we will need to perform well to keep our projected tallies up. The games against Reading and West Brom offer chances to improve on last season’s results but am personally not confident we will match those in the next three which we need to win to match. Hopefully I am proven wrong.

UTB!

No change again, exact same scoreline. You don't need me to post it do you? :)

After 24 games, we have taken the same number of points as we took in the same games last season. A look at the top three suggests that more points will be needed this season to go up automatically though so a Play Off shout is the most realistic option.

no, we are exactly teh same position. I the same fixtures last season we got 38 points, as we have this season.

interestingly after 25 games last season we also had 38 points, however I would wager that Wolves/Birmingham/Reading had lower totals that Barcodes/WBA/Forest at the same stage.

The two tables for this point last season

http://www.sufc.co.uk/page/LeagueTable/0,,10418~20081226,00.html last season

http://www.sufc.co.uk/page/LeagueTable/0,,10418~20100116,00.html This season

Wolves had 6 points more than Newcastle have this term, playing one game more though.

So last year we had to make up 12 points on Birmingham and Reading, and were within 1 point going into the last game of the season.

Whereas this year we need to make up 11 points (with a game in hand) and 7 points (having played a game more).

Surely we won`t do it again...

Daft as it sounds, we are in a better position aren't we? Last years low point was yet to come at this stage: I thought it was all over after that defeat to that team that plays in blue and white ...

Haven't updated as we are still exactly the same, no change. Just one more game on.

A few good signings and a good run of form could see us start to threaten still.

Just spotted this, excellent stuff. :)
Although results have gone the wrong way recently it's still very interesting.

I can answer the question a lot more simply than this league table!!??

'Have we improved on last season?' Have we fook!!!??

It's back.

Poor results at a time when we could have pulled clear of last season’s squad. We’re worse off now than we were although admittedly not a million miles away from last season from the same games. The problem we have is that we took 13 points from the next five last season; can you see us repeating that this time? We’d need five wins to get back on track and five points – after Saturday’s performance – would be optimistic!

Our current predicted record would (in the last ten seasons) would have seen us finish in the following places:

Champions: 0
2nd: 0
3rd: 1
4th: 6
5th: 3
6th: 0
Out of Play Offs: 0
Bottom Half: 0
Relegated: 0

Technically, we are still on track for a play off spot, likely to be fourth place. However, the reality suggests that this is the month when we come un-stuck. Anything other than ten points plus will see the comparative records fall apart and the predicted points tally drop below the Play Offs. I’m not optimistic!

Well in that case, I'll be straight round Laddy's in the morning.

Premiership here we come!

I think it is a bit too early for us. I feel that Blackwell is the right man for the job, but just things haven't quite gone to plan. Next season I hope :)
