While I am still utterly fuming over the way we threw away the win yesterday, I am now able to look at the bigger picture, and know that we need to start afresh next season.

We all know that that 2nd half performance has become frighteningly familiar this season, and the fact that Wilder and his staff couldn't use the near 2 weeks break between the semis and the final, to conjur a gameplan that was just a hair more creative than "Let's just park the bus and try and steal one on the break" is just sad.

What makes it worse, is that we've played the same way in at least half our games this season, and still ended up on 90 points. If we'd actually made a concerted attempt to play a dynamic, aggressive, attacking style of football, we could have swept the entire league away. And the wealth of talent we have had available this season was more than good enough to do it.

I have been doubtful of Wilder's ability on and off throughout the season. But yesterday was the final nail in the coffin for me. We went into the game with plan A. And that worked for a while. But once Sunderland made changes to adapt, we blatantly did not have a plan B. We played the exact same way all game, got exposed by individual mistakes, but then did nothing and expected it to change.

It's akin to when Wilder left the first time. There were issues then admittedly, primarily the gaping void in our side left by O'Connell's injury, but we again had a plan A, and nothing else to back it up. I'm concerned now that Wilder's request to the board now, will be the same as what he did to the Prince back then - "give me more money to fix it", despite his track record indicating he is more successful when spending a pittance.

We need a new philosophy. Wilder's heart is in the right place, but I think his head isn't as a result. We need someone in charge who can be more analytical, and less emotional. Who can easily identify when things aren't right, and how to fix them.

We will absolutely need that sort of thinking next season, as there are going to be some very heavy hitters we'll need to be better than to get promoted. It won't be a 3 horse race for the top 2 like this season. All 3 PL demotees will compete. As will Birmingham most likely. Plus ouslrselves. And I wouldn't be surprised if Coventry make a push for it with a full season of Lampard in charge.

If we don't make changes to get ahead of the curve, we are going to quickly fall very far behind it. The last time we lost a Championship play off final, we were in League 1 two years later. Let's instead be proactive this time, and clear out the dead wood now, rather then letting it fester.

I love Wilder for things he's achieved in the past, but for me, it's time to let go.

It's not as precarious as 2009. We're in a stronger position and the league has changed

But yes, we do have to push to maintain our position towards the top of the division. Can't afford complacency

In 2009 we asset stripped and didn't replace them. If we do anything like that now we'll fall below the standard required. We should sell players, but the right players for the right fees. Other assets should be kept and built around

I actually think Wilder would do a fine job in this transfer window but he'll produce nothing different or better on the pitch - what we see now is the final product, the culmination of all Wilder's coaching and methods. And it's tiresome

So was the Brooks chance parking the bus
Wasn't it exactly what is being described by the OP - 'parking the bus and trying to steal one on the break'? It seemed like a punt forward and cock up by the LB when under pressure from Brooks, not a methodically fashioned chance.

It's easy to quickly become a West Brom or Norwich, middling and uninspiring.

This season was a conundrum to say the least. The 20+ games we won camouflaged issues with our tactical approach both to individual games and to the season as a whole.

I certainly get that some decisions had to be made at the beginning of the season after that utterly disastrous EPL season. And to lose Arblaster and Soutter so early didn't help.

Some of the JTW signings made no sense and to find ourselves with 7 loans and a disaster of a signing in TC that simply didn't work given our conservative style of play or our tactical approach. is beyond my comprehension.

What was the reason for signing him if he didn't fit into our style of play?

We all know that our tactical approach to the season was a style of play to keep us in games. It worked up to a point but we simply did not have the style of aggressive management that could switch games, when needed, from conservatism to aggressiveness: we didn't have the management nuance, bravery, ability, or, sorry to say, the right players to change on the fly.

It all caught up with us in the week from Hell.

What we all saw yesterday, second half in particular, was a disjointed application to killing the game off. The offside goal was offside so we certainly shouldn't blame that. We missed a couple of good chances BUT once S'Land changed their shape and game plan and hunger to win the game, we were lost.

This description of the second half was the story of almost every game this season, We all talked about it in this forum from day 1... and it caught up with us at a very critical 15 minute period. We were leading after 70 minutes, how the hell did we lost it!!!

I am bitterly disappointed but more than that, I am hurt because the signs of yesterday were there throughout the season.

That's what CW and his team should have addressed and didn't

We’re going to be a side without Hamer, Souza and maybe Cooper, that’s our spine gone.

All while next season we will have to put up with Wilder trying to justify his £10m waste of money Cannon and £23m of Brewster who will inevitably get a new contract.

I agree in essence what you are saying . Lack of adaptability. We never kill games off in first half do we .

Random question I know ,but was des taylor there yesterday ??

I'd like to know how Des and the owners feel seeing the club who scared us into spending 10m on Cannon beat us while Cannon wasn't good enough to play any meaningful part

He played a very meaningful part. Cannon ensured we were a defender down when they scored the winner.

Their younger players like Watson, Rigg, Patterson are better than ours I’d say, we let them trick us with their form come end of season and we took our eye off the ball like Cornwallis did. Big reality check needed some of our players aren’t as good as we think and some get stick which isn’t deserved.

Tricky one isn't it. We accumulated 92 points this season playing the current way. Should we go for the Kevin Keegan 6 - 4 win approach instead?
