I always thought that game and the next at Walsall put a massive dent in our top two promotion push. We lost Collins before kick-off for personal reasons, then LJF who had gone to centre half we lost for the rest of the season with a dreadful knee injury just before half-time. Then in the 2nd half when they pulled it back to 2-1, their twat winger-midfield player (who had been a twat in the first game of the season) ended up getting Lowton sent off on the way back to the centre circle (for Lowton throwing the ball forward to Lee Williamson when it was our set play to restart the game!). Tin lid put on it with Maguire getting sent off in injury time for the penalty. This meant for the Walsall midweek game we'd lost our complete regular back four and Wilson had to put together a total scratch defence, who unsurprisingly played like 4 strangers for 90 minutes. Six points from them 2 games and we'd have been that far in front of the pigs they'd have thrown the towel in.
At the time Wilson was trying to bring in David Weir as back up centre half. I always thought if we'd got him in or someone similar, the Oldham farce would have been avoided. Weir would have gone in at centre half, LJF would have been left back and all likelihood wouldn't have got injured, and equally plausibly his experience in the second half would have helped see the game out and avoided the sending-offs ... and we'd have had a stable back four against Walsall. Six points in the bag, up yours pigs, you have the play-offs.
