Never having Hagan as manager

Although it's a bit 'off track' I think that's a good point and an example of other times when United have missed the opportunity to give an ex-player a go at managing the club. Hagan had incredible success at Benfica and was renowned for his innovative coaching methods. Another one, going back even further was the great Billy Gillespie who went on to manage Derry City and was held in such high esteem that the club changed it's colours to red and white stripes in honour of Gillespie's team, United.

I think for me, we have more distant turning points.

But the more recent one was our loss at home to Oldham, four years ago.

We didn't seem to be doing bad, two-nowt up with Matty Lowton and Ched scoring. Second half it was 'if you can dream anything could go wrong, then keep dreaming.' Apart from Cresswell's quality og, the fat, glistening peanutty turd in between two soft white halves of Fletchers bap was Shefki Kuqi banging in the penner with Harry sent off.

From then on in, we have been bobbar.

Don't forget we had two sent off - including our star defender - and another defender injured. The knock on effect for Walsall on the Tuesday meant we had to play Egan and we lost tamely IIRC.

We could equally choose BT hitting the keeper vs Stevenage when either side of him meant promotion. Or the more obvious Ched verdict. Or the playoff pens. The true knife-edge moments that fell the wrong way.

I thought that was Cresswell with the header in injury time? Could be wrong. I've tried to block it out.

I remember at MK Dons the day after Ched went down, there was a ball across the six yard box that Beattie was inches away from turning home as well. That moment, coupled with W********y winning in the 7th minute of 6 added on, was the moment I think it went wrong.

Yes pommpey that one still sticks in my nugget as the moment that we blew away our promotion chance. You just knew that that bastard would score the winner. I've disliked Oldham ever since, even though it was our own fault.

Now Warnock didn’t have 100% popularity for most of the time, given his occasional potty mouth, and many could argue that after so long a fresh face could be championed, however, if offered Bryan Robson, I don’t know of any fan that would not have opted No Deal.

Absolutely spot on assessment for me. I had no trouble with Warnock leaving, I was aghast that Robson got past any serious interview stage. NO DEAL Kev.

You do wonder whether the miserablism / decline which has infected the club over the last 10 years is, in part, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

You might, I have no doubt it isn't any such thing.
I will give you one guaranteed prophecy though. Appoint crap managers and sell your best players will see you deep in the shite.
Saw it all in the 70's and now repeated in this very era. "You live and learn" is a saying we've manged to disprove in fine style.

Always thought Hagan should have followed Harris, doubt we could have got him before.

Instead we got Furphy and Sirrel. :(

Before the Benfica job he was unemployed for around three years after the WBA job. We appointed Rowley during that time I think.

you forgot Lescinels ligament injury just before HT and KMac's hamstring.. but yeah that was the game and everyone in the ground knew it.

Thought discussions took place with Jimmy Hagan about the managers job. He asked if Dick Wragg was still chairman and when told 'Yes' said he wasn't interested.

to be fair we had 4 seasons in the top flight early nineties so we had d come back
we were undone by hans segers accepting money to fund his new Mercedes from Everton

Wragg became our football chairman in 1960, two years after Hagan retired. Was it because he didnt like Wragg when he was one of our directors (he joined the board in 19530

Maybe when Harris went 'upstairs' briefly in 1968/69 and Rowley took over (who apparently was more interested in the gg's than the team). However, we might not have signed Colquhoun, Hemsley et al and fate may have robbed us of the magical 1970-72 period, but who's to say under Hagan it might have turned out even better - all hypothetical obviously!

Possibly, Brian Clough referred to Wragg as the "old blusterer" in his auto around the time when Clough went for the England job. I think the consensus is that whoever had been manager, the board wouldn't have invested in the team - no change there then!!

when you consider in 72 to 74 we were as much a part of the top flight scene as any club in the country
It was a complete lack of focus on the team building that separated us from Leeds, Revie was given what he wanted , we sold what we had
We rightly saw ourselves as a a top flight team , but we had div 3 board members with no vision who thought building a stand was all they had to do

All this wonderful reminiscing. You have to wonder when it will get better. You'd hope it would be this summer, we'd change and actually for once make a few correct decisions, but judging by the clubs record and the fact that McCabe is still here it's highly doubtful

A one thing and one thing only will enable this great club to achieve success in the future and that is a board of directors with real ambition. The infrastructure is already in place as is the fantastic fan base. We've all heard the saying " build it and they will come ". Well, the fans have been turning out in their thousands for many a season. The prem season proved we can fill the Lane week in week out so all that is needed now is that all important success hungry board members under the leadership of a new ambitious owner.

Will we ever get that? I'm not sure but until the spendthrift board of present are replaced with forward thinking money men then just expect more of McCabe's drivel again.

I always thought that game and the next at Walsall put a massive dent in our top two promotion push. We lost Collins before kick-off for personal reasons, then LJF who had gone to centre half we lost for the rest of the season with a dreadful knee injury just before half-time. Then in the 2nd half when they pulled it back to 2-1, their twat winger-midfield player (who had been a twat in the first game of the season) ended up getting Lowton sent off on the way back to the centre circle (for Lowton throwing the ball forward to Lee Williamson when it was our set play to restart the game!). Tin lid put on it with Maguire getting sent off in injury time for the penalty. This meant for the Walsall midweek game we'd lost our complete regular back four and Wilson had to put together a total scratch defence, who unsurprisingly played like 4 strangers for 90 minutes. Six points from them 2 games and we'd have been that far in front of the pigs they'd have thrown the towel in.

At the time Wilson was trying to bring in David Weir as back up centre half. I always thought if we'd got him in or someone similar, the Oldham farce would have been avoided. Weir would have gone in at centre half, LJF would have been left back and all likelihood wouldn't have got injured, and equally plausibly his experience in the second half would have helped see the game out and avoided the sending-offs ... and we'd have had a stable back four against Walsall. Six points in the bag, up yours pigs, you have the play-offs.

Can't recall the date. It's something I've read in recent years and I'm sure a meeting at the Hallam Towers Hotel was mentioned.

I blame my then 16 year old son. He doesn't really have any interest in football, and I was up in Sheffield with him that weekend visiting my parents. Me and my dad were due to go to the game, but my dad was ill, so the boy decided to take his ticket. Come HT with us 2-0 up, he uttered the memorable comment "they're toying with them, it's like men against boys". You can't tempt the footballing Gods like that...

I also recall a shot from Doyle hitting the bar early in the second half with the score still 2-0. If that had gone in, game over....

PS: Lowton got sent off for 2 bookable offences; the first booking was for a tussle with an Oldham player as the latter tried to get the ball off Lowton just after they had got it back to 2-1 so that they could re-start the game quickly. Both players were booked. The second booking came a minute latter for a horror tackle in the Oldham penalty area as Lowton overran the ball and then went in studs first. The latter was a straight red any day and he was lucky to only get a yellow for it (not that it made much difference).
