Was that the best ever?

We can point to bigger wins against bigger clubs but the OP specifically refers to giant-killings - to me that means where we're the David to their Goliath which must take into consideration the void between our current states.

Agree TA, we were discussing this last night. How far have we fallen when we are referred to as giant killers :(

But let's dwell on the positives and look forward to better times.

It's about more than difference in League position for me though.

I'd go with the 1-0 wins over Leeds and Liverpool, although we were only a division below, because at that moment in time both sides were the very best this country had to offer.
For all that Southampton are well placed in the Prem., it's a transient thing, they are mid table fodder and not likely to be challenging for top four (well not getting it certainly).

If we beat Chelsea at some point this season though . . . . . .

No.

Beating European Champions Liverpool at their peak in 78 was the best achievement.

Thrashing Spurs 6-0 was the best performance and result against a "top" side.

They were great nights Sothall, but weren't we in the same league as them at the time ?.

Which one was then in your opinion?

I'd be interested to hear what you think trumps it. We gave a high-flying top-flight pretty-much full-strength team a lesson in football and outclassed them in every department and the more I think about it, the more I feel it's certainly the best in living history.

As Grecian says the 1-0 wins against L666s and Liverpool, in those days they played their strongest team available no squad rotation at all, I can also think of a good cup win against Newcastle
I thought Southampton were pretty poor last night I know that is partly down to how we played but
they didnt play well if I was a Saints fan I would be hoping for a mid table finish and be forgetting any talk about Europe

In terms of performances in our 'giant killing' history?

I thought last night we saw was a complete team performance - work ethic, controlled pressing, attacking intent, flowing football, we weren't bullied at all, not one player was prepared to leave that field on the losing side.

A lot of our other exploits under Bassett and Warnock have come from mainly one thing - graft. Yes we of course had the moments of quality, but last night we showed that quality constantly. Last night was not a fluke, it wasnt luck, it was more than deserved - we were the better team.

I hope that was the catalyst for an upturn in the league - there did seem a togetherness and determination from the fans and players at the end. If it was the catalyst then it would be the perfect one, because that performance deserved more than the prize of a semi-final for a League 1 team.

I would say yes, even though Soton were in the middle of a poor run, there is no denying that they are a very talented side. The reason I would agree with you is that we have been playing some pretty dire stuff of late and never in a million years did I see that performance suddenly being dragged out of the locker, no fluke win, Soton totally played off the park for a good 80 mins and hardly creating a chance of note.

Was the Newcastle one a replay at their place after a 1-1 draw at The Lane?

I vaguely remember going to both games if that's right

I was thinking of the 3-0 win over the Geordies by Bassetts boys (them Div1 us Div3) and then the 2-0 reverse at theirs so we came away with a 3-2 over two legs.

They had the mardy Brazilian, whose name completely escapes me, who looked absolutely miserable in the Tyneside cold. Loved it.

Yes, I chose my words carefully though.
We were in the Third Division when we beat Liverpool. That was the best "Giant Killing" achievement.

We were in The Premier League when we beat Spurs. But they finished 8th and were one of the traditional "Big 5 clubs".
We've never beat another "top 8" side by such a convincing margin during my era (late 70's onwards).

If you are talking the Gary Hamson match we were 2nd division at that time.
I remember my dad being reasonably confident as he used to say that we were Liverpool's bogey team - despite the fact that he has always admired that Liverpool side as one of the very best.

I was on the JSS terrace that night with my Grand parents - Dad's side - and can still see Gary's shot screaming into the net past Ray Clemence's out stretched hand. (no doubt Darren will be along soon to correct my befuddled mind)
Memries :)
