Three promotions to the top flight

That record stands up to scrutiny, whether you like the man or not.

Warnock would not have stood for lacklustre performances from an overpaid team, that's for sure. How many times did we get a last minute equaliser or winner when he was the gaffer! The team never stopped running, never stopped trying. "The Battling Blades" as the papers loved to call us at the time.

Yesterday's men? What does that mean?

Been a long fucking time since either was successful and it will be before either of them are again. Let them take some other fools gold.
Obviously we have different definitions of a long fucking time.

Warnock's last joy was 10/11, Adkins 11/12 so either we're having a good run currently the same as these two or those two have performed as well as SUFC which to my judgement has seen the last five years as dross.

Sorry but IMHO three years is only a long time if you're talking about a prison sentence, a pregnancy or a celebrity wedding.

I'll look forward to going up then in 2018, doesn't seem that long to wait?

Adkins and Warnock won't have added to their trophy cabinets either by 2018.

Well Mowbray hasn't won a trophy since 2008 so presumably Coventry won't be a problem on Sunday.

The thing that many overlook is that Warnock himself has said he's glad he's at the end of his career as football management has changed so much and he doesn't envy those starting out. Player power, players being too rich too young, health and safety all factors meaning he couldn't manage today, the way he used to. He couldn't handle players and discipline players now the way he would like to and can't pull the stunts he and Bassett did in terms of team bonding. The modern game is full of pampered wankers. It's just that some are more motivated to make a great career whereas others are happy to live the footballer lifestyle.

Agreed, taking us from 13,000 a week and players like Andy Woodward and Jonathan Hunt to 30,000 with Jagielka and Tonge was a huge mess.

Attitudes like this are why United won't get anywhere. People desperate to pull down those who were actually successful. It beggars belief.

Including Nigel Clough

Yeah I know.....

I know John Harris was a great manager for us but I was a youngster and my memories of him are not brilliant.
Bassett is my all time favourite for how he lifted us through some very bad times.
Then it is Warnock for me. We haven't in my lifetime (52) had a manager who could ever compare to them for what they did for our club. I will always be grateful and rue the day McCabe sacked Warnock and replaced him with Robson.

I remember that night when we played Arsenal in the Prem. We were launching wave upon wave of attack and the Shoreham was electric. The Arsenal backline were trying to talk to each other but it was that loud they couldn't hear. Their panic was palpable.

During those great days under Warnock, we could have had Real Madrid at The Lane and you'd still fancy us to have a 20 minute spell kicking towards the Kop in the 2nd half where we'd put them through the ringer.

Warnock talking about Warnock.
What a huge unexpected surprise.

He had his chance and made a huge mess of it. He only saving grace is that some worse decisions since then have ensured we've not got back up.
Go away and have a good shit Bob

Even as far back as devlin and bent
Warnocks side always got me on the edge of my seat even when we we were wank you knew they would have a spell
The games when the team played poorly or lacked effort were rare and were usually followed by a backlash in the next game/games

This sorry bunch could well win today and maybe even go on a run of a few wins but it wouldnt last
A few good performances are always followed by a few phone in performances and with the cup game against man yoo coming up the players will likely have already decided to reserve their energy like the lower league wage stealers they are

It's quite ironic.

The action of sacking Warnock and replacing him with a big world famous named manager and backing him is the most ambitious SU have been post war.

Remember Warnock failed and kept up his 100% record of relegation failure in the PL.

McCabe had massive plans to rule the world and challenge for Europe. Warnock wasn't a sexy name and had a reputation of being a fantastic lower league manager with contacts in the lower leagues.

McCabe had decided we needed to return to the PL at any cost. Robson has gained promotions to the PL and more importantly kept a team up from the PL

And of course with McCabe investing in China, Hungary, Belguium and Australia a name like Brian Robson is far more impressive than Warnock.

Also when we approached loanees many said the main reason they joined SU was the pull of Robson.

Many had doubts over Robson as being yesterday's man (me included) but remember his assistant was the highly rated Brian Kidd, the same man now at Man City.

Hindsight is a wonderful but surely people can see the logic why we brought in Robson/ Kidd. I believe the alternative was Kenny Dalglish and they tried to get Graham Taylor as director of football.

It didn't work but I'll never criticise anyone who owns our club for showing massive ambition.

The main problem is ethos.

When we appointed David Weir we decided we'd be patient and follow Swansea and Southampton model playing tippy tappy Barcelonaesque keep possession football.

We appointed Nigel Clough for the same reason playing a slow patient passing keep possession football.

This might work in the top 2 divisions but it's more difficult in the bottom 2 divisions as some teams are more physical and direct.

Clough brought in players comfortable on the ball and he focussed on a solid base defensive unit. It was almost like watching Italian football, good play in the centre circle but little goalmouth action. Under Clough it was like watching Man Utd under LVG.

The problem now is that the ethos for many teams had changed from Barcelona to Klopps B. Dortmund high energy pressing athletic football.

Adkins may want to play the Dortmund style but most of our players are slow and more suited to the patient Barca style.

We're now stuck between styles, so it's going to take a while to clear out the old and bring in the new.
