It is hardly surprising that he is still the subject of discussion. The contrast between then and now is after all rather huge, and people look back wistfully on better times and wonder where it all went wrong.

Had forums like this been around in the early 1980s we'd probably all have been talking about John Harris.

My own feeling is that the current demise started with Colin's mismanagement of the club in the Premier. The start of the January transfer window 2007 'I'm going to go out and spend all the money on one decent experienced Premier player that can go straight in to the first team' (a good idea that would have probably kept us up). One month later - Kilgallon, Stead, Fathi, Shelton and Seck, all signed up as players for the future (in the Championship).

Don't think anyone said he was the second coming.

He was just better than most of what we had before, and all of what we've had since.

I don't care how much of a Blade our manager is or isn't or how self interested he is or isn't. But having someone at the club who could stop Saturday afternoons or Tuesday evenings from being times to dread would help.

Two of those players were actually pretty good, and I don't think we saw enough of Fathi to make a proper judgement, although he looked okay to me against Everton and when he came on in another match (Fulham?). I didn't see Seck at all so have no idea how good/bad he was.

As for taking six and a half seasons to get to the premier league - yes he did. Starting from a similar position to where we are now. He didn't manage what 3 managers and a caretaker have between them managed this season - relegation to the third division.

That's probably right. I don't remember him getting any significant funds for transfers until 2005-6, and hey presto we then get promoted.

I notice that some people are very quick to point out players he purchased that didn't do very well, but forget the very large number that do do well, plus those young players that he brought into the squad.

I remember at the beginning of 2002-3 season he was derided for bringing in McCall and Allison. Alledgedly, he didn't know what he was doing. And yet both players did very well for us and we had a very exciting season.

Similarly at the start of 2005-6 there was much teeth gnasning when Shipperley was acquired. And yet he was a key player in that promotion winning side.
