Yeah I watched this one. Can't say I was overly impressed with either sadly.

Rhys Norrington-Davies certainly looks like he can handle himself physically & he's competitive. He's a willing runner & he's not afraid to put his foot in...

But as an advanced wing back he did very little with the ball.
His first touch is decent, but too often - having received the ball in space he played things far too conservatively. He was unwilling to attempt to take a man on, or deliver an early cross. He spent most of his time in possession turning back on himself and passing on responsibility.
He tried two or three crosses, when there was no other option, but none beat the first man.

So the jury's out. By the looks of things he's probably a very competent left back, but he's currently lacking the attributes needed to play wing back in the PL.

Ampadu also disappointed. He's neat & tidy(ish), comes deep, receives a pass off the defence, but he usually just returns to sender & then starts directing traffic with his arms.
Really you're wanting your man at the base to have half an idea about what's behind him, take it on the turn & start some attacks. On the rare occasions he found himself in advanced positions everything looked rushed & panicked. I certainly wasn't watching a Rolls Royce in operation.

To my eyes he either belongs in defence, or in a midfield pairing - tasked with breaking things up & keeping it simple, allowing a more attack minded player to do the bits he doesn't.

Age is on both of their sides and both are doing brilliantly to be playing at international level. They both have strong physical attributes which should mean that they both have strong futures in the game. However, the pair of them need to develop more confidence in their play & be accountable for making things happen in attack.

Ampadu’s been much better than this in previous games – yesterday he looked a little bit off it, but I thought he still had a fairly steady game. A few ambitious things didn’t come off which seemed to make him a bit more conservative on the ball, but he kept the ball well enough and mopped up well.

RND, while delighted no doubt to get another cap and generally solid defensively, will probably have been a bit disappointed that he didn’t do more with the opportunities where he was found in the final third. It took till the second half till we really saw the sort of potential – after receiving it on the left, he waited half a second and accelerated past Doherty I think before whipping a dangerous low near-post ball that had to be hit behind for a corner. You could argue that the crossing highlight being one that again didn’t find anyone isn’t much of a highlight, but it was a good chance to cross that he created through his own decent play. He was subbed for Moore, and he’d have perhaps had a clearer target to aim crosses more naturally at had Moore been on – the formation played till then perhaps had required the crosses to be hit low to suit the players on. It was a far more effective formation once the change had been made.

As an aside, I thought Brooks was very rusty. Really took a while to get going, and only started to emerge when Big Kieffer had subbed on – pleased to see him get the winner. Lovely moment for Rob Page to get a win in charge.

“Yn wahanol i Malcom Allen, dim Norrington-Davies yw y problem efo Cymru heno. Ma Bales/James/Brooks i gyd wedi bod yn sal.

Sums up our season....

I thought Ampadu played well, despite what CaptainMorgans said - it was clear his job was to break play up and keep things ticking along without being too adventurous so they could stay fairly compact. He did what was asked of him and with minimal fuss. Sure they’d love for all their midfielders to be rampaging all over the park but the fact is they’re not a good enough side to do that and Ampadu was holding their shape together well - allowing your Bales, James and Brooks to play with almost total freedom up the other end.

I think this is a fair read of his position yesterday. The last couple of games for Ampadu have come in a midfield two in a wingback system – this isn’t a system that we’ve used really since back when Coleman was in, and was unexpectedly brought back for RND’s debut game in Bulgaria. In the previous system Ampadu has a bit more licence to move about when he’s been in midfield, but yesterday, in a system where RND & Williams were expected to get as far forward as possible to offer support, Ampadu and Morrell were naturally a lot deeper.

Good point Captain, he brought back memories of James Harper with the arm waving.
