The squad was thin and was crying out for investment which never came. The following season was the start of our decline culminating in relegation in 1976 and eventually down to Div 4 in 1981

Burnley spent £80m on wages last year and still made a profit.

If your income is £132m a year, which ours was last year, you can afford £70m-£80m in wages. Based on 30 senior players. That is £52k per week per player on average, so a weekly wage structure of £65k to £35k a week depending on role etc.

We can be pretty ambitious and not totally fuck ourselves up if we are sensible.

I thought I was on the wrong site listening to fans telling their club to spend money they have not got. I thought I had wondered across the city to Sheff 6 but of course only they are stupid enough to want to go down that road AGAIN. ER hang on a min, I am on the right site !! We have had years feeding on scraps .we are not yet an established prem league .We have only had one season in the top flight and in that time we have payed around 90 mill out on players.Our owner has to find millions of pounds from somewhere to buy the whole infrastructure off the last owner and find loads of other money to up grade the ground and training facilities along with a new stadium for the lasses down the Cliffe while bank rolling CW targets.Now I realise it is easy spending other peoples money but our owner is not the wealthiest in the prem ,he can not be asked to find even more money with out some other guy coming on board to share the burden .He has done more than any one could hope in coughing up cash and backing the manager and all this without a punter coming through the turnstiles. We have to learn to walk before we can run ,Un like our neighbours who are a bit dim we should realise we are not a massive club and can not compete with the money guys who have been established in the top flight for years,but we are a very well run club and because of this we are in the best league in the world unlike others who spent money they had not got and payed a heavy price and are now nobodies in the world of soccer. Wigan, Swansea,Hull,Sunderland,SWFC,Coventry,Ipswich,Bolton,Blackburn even Leeds up to a few years ago all went that way spending what they had not got and look at them now.Nearly all of them went so close to being history.

It's no good asking for a level of success if there's a padlock on the biscuit tin. At some point, the financial outlook will have to change.

On another note, the folk of Sheffield do seem to be happy with a 'that'll do' attitude, you'll never go far with that outlook.

You are right it will change but only when the cash is there.Even the big clubs are now thinking very carefully before spending like they used to now that they have no money coming in from the turn styles .

I think they'll be plenty more money spent before the window closes.

I was referring to your reference to “the next level “. There is no way we can yet be established as a top 8 club.
£40k a week for the squad plus NI contributions etc equates to around £65k before non playing salaries and other overheads are considered. We don’t have that sort of income yet.

When he said that !. he wasnt talking about wages.Its a matter of improving the squad ,as that gets better and stronger the wages rise along with it always staying within the perimeters which the budget permits.
Wilder has said this numerous times I dont know why it gets brought up.

We are in a catch 22 situation which is best demonstrated by comparing us with Burnley. Burnley have a wage bill almost double that of United's. They hardly spend anything on wages. Essentially they do their money on wages.The owners invest no personal capital.
United do less than half their money on wages. We keep a tight stranglehold on wages. Our owners, like Burnley, have who won't invest any personal capital.We are run on the prem monies.
Bournemouth went down spending more on wages than Burnley, and more on fees than SUFC.The owner invested a lot of personal capital.

Which of the three do you want? If you want the Bournemouth option but to do it better, you want the Prince out. A lot of people on this board want the Prince out but are too afraid to say it.The logic is ineluctable when they want us to pay both the fees and the wages.
