"bore fest. They had loads of possession and barely got in our box"

"Piss poor to lose that. Griff with a shocking error gift them the first. Sheff United looked pretty piss poor especially going forward so a very very disappointing result to end the home season. "

"Can't believe what I've just witnessed. Bossed that game except for last 7 mins. Didn't deserve to draw, never mind lose. Smash n grab in every sense of the word. Oh well, sums up our season, can't defend. Cracking atmosphere in the paddock. Even when we got hit with a sucker punch last minute goal, the support for the lads was the best it's been all season. Cracking night, just a shame the best team lost. "

"Game felt like a pre-season kick about with nobody pushing themselves to hard. Probably the best atmosphere from the fans with as much singing in this match as the last 10 games put together."

"Atmosphere was good tonight, poor in the away end considering the numbers they had I barely heard them until they scored, seemed to be way over policed too tonight. Seems to be our luck against Sheff United with the red this season costing us and last seasons cup tie when similar to tonight Micky cocked up the substitutes by taking Dodds off who had Brayford in his pocket and Griff and bringing on Shuker and Lloyd for a rare run out. Should have won it just before they scored when Hugill was selfish when a pass would have put Shuker in for a simple finish.I'd go as far to say Sheffield United were probably other than Orient at home the worst side on the day to beat us this season, seemed very toothless and boring to watch but they must have been doing something right. Seemed similar to MK last home game."

"like watching paint dry."

"Hard really. I question bringing on Ryan Lloyd, an inexperienced young lad when trying to defend a lead against a decent resourced club like Sheff United. However, if you can't blood young lads in the last home game of the season in what is effectively a nothing game, when can you?"

"We'd have been promoted had we be able to hold onto a ****ing lead"

"Why the hell did Micky make the sub, we were on top."

"Really can't believe we lost that"

"Two terrible substitutions by Adams blew that game. We were doing well. Dodds did a great job on Brayford. Really annoyed"

"Should never have lost that game, the first 80 mins we played as well as I,ve seen them play this season, as has been said, if only we could defend a lead."

"For a period of about 15 - 20 mins before they scored their first goal they seemed lost and were doing nothing. They then got that first goal and well…… normal service was resumed."

"I wouldn't be too harsh on the team tonight. They played very well and worked hard all game but were up against a very classy outfit who were miles better on the ball than us and kept possession really well.We did well to stay in the game for so long. hey are a very very good team and if I was you I'd put a fiver on them to go up next year. Sometimes you have to hold up your hands and give credit to the opposing side. Their no.5 had a fantastic match."

"For 80 minutes we were by far the better team but two pieces of slack defending cost us. Thought the crowd were good tonight too.
What is it with us and Sheff Utd? We never seem to have any luck with them: last minute goals, sendings off etc."

"The difference between the two teams was that we played for 80 minutes whereas they rather unfairly played for 90. As soon as we switched off, after two disastrous substitutions, they smelt blood and once they'd scored one the second was predictably inevitable.A great pity really, for most of the game we kept them out and looked like worthy winners despite their neat but largely ineffectual passing. A disappointing end to the season."

"Thought Sheff Utd were poor to be honest. Kept the ball well but did zero with it and knocked it around in front of us. Annoying to lose that"

"I expected far more from them given their resurgence this year, but they did not impress me at all. They never threatened until two bits of poor defending from us.Having said that, I do expect them to go up, or at least be top 6, next season but I was surprised that they weren't as good as I thought they'd be or much of a threat tonight."

"Atmosphere electric at VP tonight! It's been a very good season and it's only onwards and upwards from here hopefully"

"Our support was quality tonight"

"There support was awful tonight considering how many they brought"

"Great support from us tonight"

"Quality tonight we definitely deserved a point at least."

"there was more than the 6,325 announced as attendance"

"So proud to be a Valiant. vale were excellent tonight"

"Did anyone tell our players it wasn't a pre-season game. Gutted"

"How did we lose that. Smash and grab"

"Yet again Adams tactics were baffling"

Ha ha, the lot of 'em. We did nothing with the ball apart from stick it in their net twice.

I've just got in after a cab to the station straight after Porter's goal, a train to Birmingham, another train to London, the number 10 to Hammersmith, the N9 to Isleworth and then another cab home to Ashford (Middx), and to say I'm knackered is an understatement, but coming in to read them all moaning about being robbed has made my day, if it wasn't made already.

Once again, ha ha. The lot of 'em!

The bit about over policing was spot on, what were they expecting?

It was unbelievably over the top and they weren't all local. As I stood waiting for the Trig Jnr contingent, I saw one copper asked where the away end was turn to his mate because he didn't know. Straight after, another one was asked where the ticket office was and sent somebody off in the wrong direction. I was able to intervene in both cases. One copper said he was sorry, he'd never been there before :-)

As for the football, they scored with their first attack, courtesy of a bit of a Matt Hill miskick and although we weren't incisive, we were never in any trouble. They're right about our passing being ineffectual mind, no striker, no end product.

This is typical Potteries crap, Vale were useless and what bloody atmosphere from the home fans.We were ok on the night, looked a bit too deliberate and heavy legged.Great support and atmosphere in the away end.
Look forward to reading the local rag today it's the most biased paper ever.I recollect many years ago beating Stoke at the old Victoria ground, we trounced them 4-0' the headline was "we were Vonked"........4-0 up in 20 minutes two Vonked headers but you guessed it Stoke dominated the game , were the best team and were unlucky to lose!
Look forward in two years time to doing the same to Stoke at The Britt in two years.......in the Prem

To be honest I don't really see how anyone could say that they were the better team or it was a 'smash and grab', alright I suppose we didn't really create much but they did even less. Perhaps it's just me going senile but other than the goal and them hitting the post near the start I honestly cannot remember them having ANY sort of attack or meaningful touch in our third of pitch. We absolutely dominated possession (I'm surprised BBC had it at 44%/56%, I would have had it at about 70% for us!), moved the ball about very well and were camped in their half pretty much all game, Vale didn't do any of those things.

They were everything I expected from them. Big, ugly, hoofers who were more interested in trying to turn the game into a rugby match than actually playing football. Their big number 21 in the middle of the pitch (Griffith?) took the piss at times with his awful tackles/wrestling/diving.

Thought our fans were excellent as well and made a lot of noise; even after the goal Vale didn't make a sound, the 'we forgot that you were here' chant summed things up perfectly.

The 'United fans were quiet' is total nonsense. I listened to the game and they were all you could hear. It's just one of the cliches of football fans to say the oppositions crowd were crap after you've lost

Cheers Roy.

Didn't go last night but it seems like another 'undeserved' three points for our lads...another football team 'far better than us'...but losing....another set of 'poor away supporters' :D football fans are great!

Thanks Roy I love these threads such a funny read!! I wasn't there last night but listening to it and looking at the stats I'd say the "Valiants" are just another set of bad losers pissed off the they were out thought by a class a manager who gets the results even without a proper striker!! Can't bloody wait till next season with a few new Cloughie additions we have to be up there don't we??! UTB x

Amazing really, the tripe that some football fans come up with.
Every positive aspect of the game, ie, more shots at goal, more shots on target, more possession, more corners, less free kicks given away, less yellow cards received, not to mention more goals and we're the ones who are crap.

This just seems to be the norm every time we win. It's just sour grapes and frustration.
Being Sheffield United in Division Three also gives other fans the perfect excuse to slag us off when we don't muller them.
It's just easy for them to say "I was disappointed with them" because they expect us to be better. They do this week in week out whilst totally overlooking the fact that we are in Division Three for a reason.
Had we had most possession, most shots, most shots on target and most corners but still lost they'd have graciously accepted that we were the better team and they were a bit lucky to win. But because we pulled one out of the hat their frustrations have run riot.

Nice one Captain, a man after my own heart having lived and worked amongst delusional Stokies for 25 years.

I remember that 4-0 very well, I think Muggleton was in goal for them. The following Monday I had to do a work presentation with a 15 minute time limit. My starting line was "what can you do in 15 minutes, unless you're Stoke City, in which case you can go 4-0 down"

It brought the house down......

Not been to Port Vale, but maybe it's a ground where noise gets lost so impossible to hear if other fans singing or not? Maybe both sets of fans were nice and loud? :)

Carl Muggleton indeedy, remember David White creating havoc, your luckyTB I have been living down in the potteries for 35 years.....only one team round here ,,,,,,,,Leek Town ( once managed by one Tony Agana and second useless fact Lee Morris played. a few games last season ,3 million quid Derby paid for him.......daylight robbery

I didn't go but the match but the stats (again, I accept, far from conclusive) don't support what the Vale fans are suggesting at all.

Reading these 'View from...' threads it appears that we are one of the worst teams in history and every victory we have had has been down to gifts from the officials and/or incredible luck.

And the funniest thing about that is ....... think back ....... when was the last time we had a referee you would call a "homer".

I've been going now for 49 years, and the last one I can remember that I thought "bloody hell we have a ref who likes us here" was against Exeter at home in the 4th division when Our lord Keith Edwards (may he be praised ) scored after handling the ball and the ref played on !!!

Since then Ive seen virtually every home match and a shit load of away matches and not seen a ref who favoured us above the opposition.

Agreed - I was at the game too and we had the majority of everything that mattered. Problem is it followed a lot of the games I seen this year (which is all but 4) where despite the possession, and the huffing and puffing we didn't look like we were really going to hurt them. Third best goals against this season and second worse in terms of goals for (up to last night). Think that fact is difficult to argue with. Still, a win is a win and the Vale fan is talking crap. What's the noise of our fans got to do with shit anyways.

Thing is though longinthetooth, there's no way of knowing how much of our supposed meaningless possession had worn out the Vale players allowing us to score two late goals.
The first rule in battle is to take the field.

Hee Hee. Or Lord Cornwallis in the Patriot.

I like Leek as a place (you can get Hendo's in the Home and Colonial) and I once bumped into Eric Bristow in the Co-op, which I believe is to convert to Waitrose.

I've been a few times to Leek Town over the years and even went on the Leek Town Wembley Special train when they played in the FA Trophy final. Another team that failed to score at Wembley in my presence :-)

Talking of that most relished of relishes, you can get Hendos crisps at Whistle Stop in Victoria Station now. The poor guy serving me had to listen to me enthusing for a good few seconds before security escorted me off the premises.

Hendos in Home and Colonial! Well I never mind you it's just downsized but will have a look, mind you my Aunty Joan is heading over from Gleadless Valley next week with a couple o bottles of what can only be described as Nectar, why it never took off in Sainsburys God only knows ( got one o them in Leek now ).......3-0 against Barrow!

The cells in Leek nick are horrible ,especially when you have to spend a full night with 15 other Blades all wrongly arrested (wrong minibus). They gave us a half pumped up Wembley trophy ball and we played 7 a side murderball in a 20 foot square prison yard. We won 15-12 I think

Am I correct in thinking all our 4 goals came from headers?

Whenever we are beaten at home I always think that our fans put over a balanced view about the opposition. More often than not praising certain aspects of the opposition. Why do other club's supporters see things so differently? I went on Friday and thought we controlled the vast majority of the game. We were disciplined and kept possession well. The only down side (and this has been covered over and over) was the action in their area. What I saw and what Vale fans saw seem like 2 different games.

I think they were all headers and I remember Muggleton getting a standing ovation when he came and collected a cross at 4-0 down. I always enjoyed telling Stokies that although we had him on loan, twice I think, he was only ever a non-playing sub apart from the time he came on as a striker in the last minute at Reading when we were 3-0 up. Not good enough to be our keeper you see :-)

Agree with your summary of the Vale game, we never looked in trouble, whilst never looking very threatening either.
