I haven't seen owt on this for a while so I thought the dreaded subject needed addressing.

What, if any, are the planned changes for the sh1te that is VAR? I've given up hope of VAR being kicked into touch but there seemed to be increasing noises through last season that at the very least some of the worst parts of it would be changed. Strictly speaking I'm talking about rule changes as VAR is just the application of said rules.

The 2 things I'd hoped to see the back of were marginal offsides and accidental handballs resulting in goals being chalked off. Nobody wants to see good goals disallowed because a finger nail's width of boot leather is ahead of the defender (Lunny style) or the ball has grazed a striker's hand in the build up (Oli's goal v Man U that could have been on another day).

Talk of changing these 2 daft rules was the only thing that kept me going last season. If they stay in place without any change I seriously don't think I can stay in love with footy.

Good news they have changed the handball rule. Do I understand it now ? NO !

They've changed VAR - now it's going to be even less transparent as they won't be showing any lines drawn for offsides, or multiple angles of incidents to the public. You're just going to get the decision without any evidence of how they came to it.

They're sticking with the "offside is offside" thing.

More looking at screen.

Handball defined by t-shirt line, also the amount they go back to dissalow a goal for handball has decreased.

Only minor changes really, but chances are fans won't be there to wait 5 mins anyway.

Berge penalised for handball in the area because there's no VAR. To get his arm further out of the way he would have had to cut a hole in his chest and put his arm inside himself. Harsh to put it lightly.

The standard of referees makes VAR necessary unfortunately.

Except it hasn't decreased the number of dodgy decisions at all.

I read that the Ref's are going to be asked to use the pitch side monitor more often to make their own mind up,in line with how other countries use it.

Thats a good thing right.

It's a good thing if your aim is to waste another two minutes waiting for an inevitable decision reversal.

They do this in Spain, amongst other countries, and I've never seen a single incident there where the ref, having been asked to go and look at the monitor, hasn't reversed his original decision.

As soon as you see the ref walk over to the monitor you can be sure he will go with whatever the VAR is suggesting. Obvious really because if he doesn't it creates a conflict between both of them that would lead to even more controversy.

An utterly futile waste of time and I don't just mean VAR in general.

Apparently. I'm still baffled as to how it's any better. It's still the same set of referees making the decisions.
I'm not convinced that the pitch side ref is going to make any better decision than the guy sat on the industrial park.

He's going to be put under pressure when the fans are back, affecting the decision.

The thing they needed to change was super marginal offside decisions

Just get rid of offsides, its the only way. Play like in the schoolyard with a couple of lads boglining up front. Guaranteed Sharp will get 140 goals next season.

😂 Bog lining! We used to say that 40 odd years ago. I wonder if it's just a Sheffield/South Yorks thing?

Michael Oliver.

Exactly. It's a mystery to me as to why Michael Oliver will be better at reading a monitor on the side of the pitch than he is at reading a monitor at Stockley Park.
