For those saying that Clarke should be in a shout of "Player of the YEAR" - it says YEAR, so that means someone's who's been the best player for the whole YEAR.

For me Clarke's only really turned up for half of the year until he got his new contract. That's why he's not in with a shout of player of the YEAR

I emphasise the word year on PURPOSE

Sorry to be honest and highly controversial but Duffy? Really? He's a great player but missed the first month of the season and where has he been in the last month or so when we've needed someone to win us games?!?? Not sure why he's not the first name on the team sheet, but for whatever reason that is, I'm struggling to see him as a Player of the Year.

If we were having a 'Who on their day is our most influential Player' Award then he wins.

For me the omnipresent Baldock optimises everything about this team and Tufty - turns up every game, never gives up, what he lacks in skill he makes up for in effort, and in the final 3rd his output is patchy. For that reason he gets my vote!!

Really ? Because he's been carrying the team recently but due to our inept defence his goals are no longer winners.

It actually means SEASON.

And the old "new contract" fallacy. Was he the only one who got a rise based on promotion?

Thought I’d have a look at how his total compares. Our top league goalscorers at this level from 1996/97 onwards (because that’s as far back I can check via soccerbase), current squad in bold.

Beattie 22 (6 pens) 2007/08
Clarke 18 (0 pens) 2017/18
Brown 16 (5 pens) 2002/03
Marcelo 16 (1 pen) 1998/99
Bent 16 (0 pens) 1999/00
Gray 15 (1 pen) 2004/05
Beattie 12 (5 pens) 2008/09
Cresswell 12 (0 pens) 2009/10
Henderson 12 (3 pens) 2009/10
Katchouro 12 (0 pens) 1996/97
Lester 12 (6 pens) 2003/04
Sharp 12 (2 pens) 2017/18
Walker 12 (0 pens) 1996/97
Asaba 11 (0 pens) 2002/03
Devlin 11 (1 pen) 1999/00
Shipperley 11 (0 pens) 2005/06
Taylor 11 (0 pens) 1996/97

Some things I’d note from that:
  • Sharp only needs 1 more out of the remaining games to pass the other 6 on 12 goals.
  • In the 16 seasons I looked at, we’ve only had 2 strikers reach double figures in 5 seasons other than this one (96/97, 97/98, 19/00, 05/06, 09/10).
  • I probably still don’t give Gray enough credit for that 15-goal haul. For me selling him was an important part of our success the following year, when Shipperley topped the charts with 11.
  • That Clarke total is bloody impressive, and really I don’t think we talk enough about how remarkable a season he’s had.

Updated to show penalties (probably not 100% accurate) and rearranging to show goals from open play:

Clarke 18 (2017/18)
Beattie 16 (2007/08)
Bent 16 (1999/00)
Marcelo 15 (1998/99)
Gray 14 (2004/05
Cresswell 12 (2009/10)
Kachouro 12 (1996/97)
Walker 12 (1996/97)
Asaba 11 (2002/03)
Brown 11 (2002/03)
Shipperley 11 (2005/06)
Taylor 11 (1996/97)
11 bar

As a matter of interest, have we had many penalties this season? We seemed to have had a lot of claims turned down, strong claims aswell.

I have started to put together the end of season review and my initial grades (could change with 3 games to go) would agree with above.

Duffy at a push just ahead of Fleck, Baldock, Basham and then maybe Clarke as an outsider with O'Connell. Those 6 have been the outstanding players for me. Blackman just outside that group as are Stearman who started season poorly but has ended well. Stevens the inverse. Sharp and Brooks done it in patches but neither played enough for me.

If Coutts had carried on and stayed fit he might have won it comfortably.

Reading that, we really do have a very good squad don't we? Well done to Wilder and Knill, I love our squad.

2 goals in how many? also noticed he's not been putting a shift in as much as he did before the new contract. he also seems to have lost a lot more pace

That's interesting, always surprised that Shipperley was top scorer with just 11 the last time we got promoted at this level. Who else contributed that season; Kabba, Ifill, ? Millwall reminded me of that Warnock team, whole greater than the sum of its parts.

The club email me every 20 minutes about some crap or another. Would be easy to get in touch with a POY poll

Exactly- they’re always emailing about stuff so why not send something out on SurveyMonkey to registered ST holders and members, etc? Player of the year; young player; goal of the season, etc. Would only take 2 minutes to fill in and dead easy; they’d get a huge % completed.

He's scored 3 goals in our last 4 games but don't let your agenda get in the way of the facts......

no shit, he's only turned up for half the season
Well he hasn't has he?
The performances are still there by and large, even though the goals dried up till recently.

It's fuck all to do with him signing a new contract. He's probably burnt out, he's barely had any sort of rest even for 10 minutes, he never gets subbed.

Indeed, which is why just having a 20 goal player isn’t what’s needed for success. The others from that season making up the top 5 were:

Webber - 10
Ifill - 9
Kabba - 9
Jagielka - 8

Wonder if these morbid arseholes slagging clarke off have ever achieved anything close to what he has in life? My bet is most of em live in their mums basement in middle age.

Ricky and his ultras were runners up.:)

I didn't realise the 'BLUT' was its own separate entity and supporters club to be honest.

But if it is I'm sure someone will know who the 'BLUT player of the year' was - about 150 on here indicated they'd become 'members', after all....

I don’t think that’s right – Kabba got 9 in the league.

Happy to be corrected here but IIRC this WAS an example of a player’s form nosediving after some contract talks - didn’t Kabba’s contract suddenly become a spikey subject immediately after that 1-1 draw with Leeds? I feel like he said something in his post-match interview about how he wanted a better contract after his (brilliant) start to the season.

After which he scored one more league goal that season and gave me two of my angriest moments when he missed late sitters against Reading and Hull at home (although in mitigation, Unsworth scored from the resulting corner in the latter :))
