When I read this, I thought 'this can't be right' so I looked for evidence, I found this article which backs it up:Not a chance. They die, on average, 10 years earlier - saving the country an absolute fortune. The numbers aren't even close.

Having said that, having seen an uncle die of lung cancer (in his 50s), looking like he'd spent several months in a concentration camp, I wouldn't wish it on anyone - whether it saved the state money or not.
I suppose in the end it's all down to quality of life and in many ways I would let people do what they choose - with the proviso it has no detrimental effect on anyone else. Personally I don't like second hand tobacco smoke or vape and diesel/petrol fumes but if people can produce these with no effect on anyone else, so be it - but they can't
