A bit like Sabella instead of Maradonna. Only Guthrie was more like salmonella than Sabella.

The current buzz phrase is 'proven Championship player'. It is much easier to say than to come up with serious suggestions of such players. Outstanding players are either not for sale, or going to Premiership clubs or clubs with parachute payments for ridiculous sums of money. Some proven players may be on their way down, struggling with injury, loss of form, be difficult characters, not fit in with our style of play, etc. Some have played some games for a good team, and may have been helped out by playing with good players. Some players have been very good for the weaker teams in the league. A successful transfer policy takes months of planning, skill, persistence, and a little luck. Suddenly deciding to buy a particular player in response to 2 defeats in August will not bring success. So we have to hope that some of the pieces in the jigsaw have long been in place (fingers crossed).
One irony is that one of the more achievable type of targets (good player in weak team, highly rated by fans last season) is already at the club, Brayford; I am not saying he is the answer, but if he were not already ours I am sure there would be a long thread about him in the rumours section saying we should bring him in.

Whats crazy is that a club like Hull have £10M to spend and a Cardiff City player is worth £10m.

Cardiff and Hull?
Its utter bollocks.

Because they're tinpot and we're massive?

Wilder's value policy is a good one but there are possibly occasions where he needs to consider whether his valuations are a little low and whether it's worth spending a bit more than we want to on the odd player.

Being prudent is a dangerous game for a manager to play. Ultimately their jobs are at stake and missing out on players can cost them.

Not disagreeing, but on the other hand paying over the odds can cost them as well.

It's a right bugger this balancing act.

Oh well, that's management for you ;)

I think it makes sense to hold some money back until we see how we do these first 5 games. Wilder did it last season to great effect.

Haven't Moore, Sharp, Basham, Coutts, Carruthers, Baldock and a few more had experience it the Championship

Yeah but none of them exactly set it on fire did they. We've got a team full of journeymen, lets face it. Wilder did well last season getting the best out of them but they're all out of their depth in the Championship, Coutts possibly excepted. The only player we've got of unquestionable Championship quality is Brayford and he can't get a sniff in.

If I had to guess, I would say the board's thinking runs as follows:

1. Wilder got us up last season spending less money than other managers spent in previous failed campaigns.
2. On the evidence of the last two seasons, Wilder seems to know what he's doing.
3. Spending money like Boro or a few others have spent is out of the question. We can't and/or won't do that.
4. As a result of not spending much, there is less chance of challenging for promotion.
5. There is also not much chance of going down given the squad is decent and the manager knows what he's doing.
6. Hence mid table consolidation is the most likely result this season if things go ok.
7. We don't want to spend much to achieve mid table consolidation.
8. We might, however, spend money if we get in trouble, as we did last season and when Clough came in.

In other words: if we win a couple before the window shuts, don't expect them to spend much. If we lose a couple more on the bounce, we might spend now. Otherwise they will hold off until January.

So I was right.

McCabe did say that January was maybe the time to spend which I found an odd comment but as you say Revolution he probably meant if we were in trouble

the lack of faith in our current players is astounding

we re 6th arent we
and some stiill saying relegations looming by christmas

Im going to bed , the nay sayers at our club jus do my head in

doom and gloom seems to be a trait we excell in, even when things improve

Sorry, you have completely lost me

People will generally blame the owners for our lack of substantial investment but I also think much of it is down to Wilder's stubborn maximum valuations of potential signings.

I like his value for money approach and generally I think it's the way to go. But the higher up the leagues you go, the harder it becomes to get value for money, and if you rigidly stick to this approach it will slow down your progress. I wonder if Wilder's evaluating his approach, not with a view to changing completely and going full Redknapp, but to being more flexible and biting the bullet on some occasions to get important deals done.

Wilder and the club need to adjust to the new Championship. I'm sure Wilder will, at least.

Believe me, your brand of positivity is far more depressing...

I think the main issue..... if there actually is one, is that the type of player CW wants is a hungry, point to prove kind of player. A player that will keep his head down and in some respects never have a crossed word with CW.

As you go up the leagues and transfer ladder, players don't tend to have much to prove and earn what they think they are worth. This makes for a different player with a more cocksure personality. One who may have a little bit too much to say for themselves.

CW clearly does not like that type of player. In time as we progress i think CW will have to learn how to manage the bigger earners or risk us stagnating in the Championship.

I think that's more true of Clough than it is of Wilder.

I don't think Wilder wants shrinking violets and I don't think he'd mind players who speak their mind. He has high expectations in terms of work-rate and expects players to be part of "the group" but I don't think he'd shy away from characters.
