Have just noticed that Charlton play MK Dons and Wednesday play Stevenage on the same night that we play Huddersfield. What are the chances of the top 6 being drawn against each other like that and how important could the night be to our automatic promotion ambitions?!!
 



As it stands I think a home win at the Valley, and away wins at Huddersfield and the sty would be in order.

We have a 5 in 24 chance chance of playing against another top 6 team (or roughly 1 in 4). The mathematical odds of it happening to all of the top six on the same night I assume are approx 1/4 x 1/4 x 1/4 = roughly one in 64.
However, I'm no maths expert so maybe someone better qualified can say I I'm right or wrong.

My O Level maths was a long time ago....

Not sure Broomers but even though each team theoretically has the same mathematical chance of drawing one of the others it doesn't work out that way because once a fixture or team is taken out of the equation it reduces the possibilites for the rest so the odds shorten for every fixture that is 'settled'.

Each team can in theory draw any of the 23 other teams home and away.
Of those combinations, only 36 would involve 6 specific teams drawn against each other.
However, as above, the odds change as more fixtures are drawn.

Over to someone else to continue........:)

But the whole discussion is pointless as any set of fixtures on any given week have the same odds of occuring as any other set of fixtures. It's just that we see certain sets of fixtures as significant. Just as it would not be amazing if 1,2,3,4,5,6 were drawn as the 6 lottery number as you have the same chance of those 6 numbers as any other combination.

Just call me killjoy...

The fact remains though Dazzler that the odds of 1,2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 coming out in the lottery is just under 14,000,000/1 so there must be an answer to the original question rgeardless of it's pointlessness :)
 
Don't have my calculator with me but think the calculation is 6/24 x 5/23 x 4/22 x 3/21 x 2/20 x 1/19
 
Well I reckon it's 5/23 x 3/21 x 1/19 equalling 1 in 611. Any other theories?
