Utility players

Not exactly a utility player, but Gareth Taylor was a centre-half, then converted to a centre-forward by Bristol Rovers and that was when we signed him. One of my favourite players, rarely mentioned on here for some reason.

John Tudor was a centre back at Coventry before signing for us. He has played centre back for us a few times, Eddie Colquhoun was ruled out of the midweek game at Pompey in Sept 1970 so Tudor played in his position and we won 5-1. In the next game (v Wendy) Colquhoun returned to his position and Tudor was dropped to the sub's bench. Colquhoun scored our first and Tudor got the memorable winner in the 3-2 win!

Mitch Ward and Dane Whitehouse were both good at full back and in midfield.

Jags was a good Championship midfielder and full back and an excellent centre half at all levels.

Bob Atkins played at full back and then covered up front a bit when we were short in 1983-4. He scored a few goals - most notably at Rotherham.

Greg Halford played several positions well, as has been pointed out.

Sir Robert of Booker happily slotted in wherever Bassett told him to play. Although 90% of his time was in midfield, he often made an emergency centre back when someone was injured or sent off, or played the last ten minutes up front if we were lumping long balls up looking for a winner. Fairly sure that he ended some games as full back too.

Agree not a great player - but ran Andy Barnsley close for ugliest player.
I have to confess: I dislike "utility players" with a vengeance. "Jack of all trades - Master of none".

2 players immediately spring to mind: Steve Charles. All muscle and bustle but not much else. And another Steve: Steve Foley: similar but possibly more talent than Charles up front.

Oh those days when we used to chant for Duggie Brown to be brought on - or super-sub Gary Brazil eh? We were desperate back then and it's because we relied too much on "utility players"!

Jags and Halford in my time. Jags at the lane, in net, tipping over from van persie, memories!
