Utd's best ever Christmas?

If we get a 4th win in a row on the 2nd January, when was the last time Utd equalled that over Christmas?

Christmas 1935.

We lost to Bradford City (A) 1-2 on Dec 14th.

Our next game was on Dec 21 versus Hull City (H), which we won 7-0.
We then won our next five games:
Dec 25 - Swansea Town (A) 3-1
Dec26 - Swansea Town (H) 4-1
Dec 28 - Leicester City (A) 3-1
Jan 1 - Doncaster Rovers (H) 3-0
Jan 4 - Bradford Park Avenue (H) 2-1.

We didn't actually lose another game in any completion until March 26th, 0-1 to Fulham (H).

Not sure that this one counts, but at the end of WW2 in the 1945-6 season, before the league proper had been restarted, we were in the Football league North section (and finished as Champions).
We won 5 consecutive games from Dec 22 until Jan 1 (inclusive). We actually won on Dec 16 as well, but I thought that was too long before Christmas to be included.

Why did we play Swansea twice on consecutive days?

Why did we play Swansea twice on consecutive days?
It was quite common back in those days to play on consecutive days on Christmas day and Boxing day - I remember playing Man Utd at BDTBL around 1963/4 on Xmas day which we won 2-1 and lost the next day at OT 2-0 ! The good old days !!

Why did we play Swansea twice on consecutive days?

As others have said, it didn't used to be unusual for games to be played on consecutive days during the Christmas period. For that matter, it also happened sometimes over Easter as well, with sides playing on Good Friday, then again on Saturday with a third game two days after that on the Easter Monday.

This sort of scheduling was still fairly common in the 1980s, but seemed to die out in the 1990s.
The last time that I can find of it happening to us was Christmas 1994. On Dec 26 we drew 1-1 at home to Middlesbrough and then on Dec 27 we won 3-1 away at Swindon. But I haven't looked at any records from the beginning of this century.

Can you imagine the fuss that would be made if that kind of scheduling happened now?!

1966 that was, Jones and Birchenall got the goals. Just under 43,000 in the lane on Boxing Day

We won 6 in a row between 10th December and 7th January in the 16/17 promotion season. I seem to think it pushed us into the top two, then after the wobble losing at home to Fleetwood and at Walsall in January didn’t we go the rest of the season unbeaten?

One thing I find disturbing is that of the 23 other clubs in our division at that time, 5 of them are no longer league clubs and one of those 5 has ceased to exist.

Used to be the same at Easter. I recall playing Leeds at home Monday and Bellend road Tuesday. Or is my memory letting me down again ?

Other way round wasn't it? i remember around 1973 drawing 0-0 at Elland Road. We went on the away end and there were only a few of us there......some right brutes kicked us off to one side and then we were stuffed at home (3-0 or 4-0) the next night and they took the bloody kop to top it off!

It was 2-0 at the Lane. Lorimer scored both goals

I was thinking more mid to late 1960s but may well have been the case 1973ish. I think 1972 and 1974 they packed the Kop, around Easter, they were in the race for the title on both occasions.

Weren't they usually more local games played at Christmas? Sheffield to Swansea and back on Christmas Day seems particularly harsh!
I can’t imagine how the teams travelled from Swansea to Sheffield after the game on Christmas Day. Road travel would have been really slow, so it must have been by train, on a public holiday!

Almost 90 years later, no chance by train, so it would have to be by motorway, although maybe a flight from Cardiff to DSA would be possible if the airport was still operating 🙂

Crikey, felt like a 4-0 defeat anyway! Got into the ground at 6.30 and the nearest i could get to behind the goal was under where the roof started......mind you, was close enough to give Bremner some stick when he came over to take a corner.

Derby boxing day, Blackburn, Wigan and qpr the promotion season was 4 in a row at Christmas

Some of us are old enough to remember that happened every year, including playing on Christmas Day!
I just about remember games being played on Xmas Day. The fixture Blackpool v Blackburn was the last to do so. It went on for two or three seasons after other Clubs had ditched it, and became something of a Xmas tradition. I was asked by a Blackpool supporters YouTube channel to write an article on it but bottled it .
