United's Kits Through History

I believe Athletic copied southamptons , being a port that was used to go to bilbao , well according to Athletics history
Matt le tissier was on about this. Bilbao sent some people to england to buy a new kit. They all went on the piss in London and had forgotten to buy anything. When they were back in Southampton waiting to go home they remembered and so bought the kits off Southampton. So, Bilbao played in Southampton's shirt before adopting the style permanently

Bilbao sent some people to england to buy a new kit.

Founded by Brits, as was AC Milan and quite a few other continental clubs - hence the anglicised names. Apparently half the shirts bought went to Athletico Madrid (at that time called Athletic Madrid - Franco wanted it Spanishised from what I read) as there were close ties between the two clubs and, if what I read is correct, they weren't allowed to play each other for some time because of this. Juventus shirts came about through an English player for them, John Savage, who was asked to source new shirts (they were playing in pink shirts with black neck ties at the time). He asked a friend in Nottingham to get them and he sent Notts County shirts.

On the subject of stripes shirtmakers apparently have very precise names and dimensions for stripes - the references I have found say we played in red and white "Butcher's stripes" in the first season in stripes ("the butcher stripe is beefier and bolder than the more mild Bengal stripe"). As opposed to pinstripes which are "usually 1 or two yarns thick. The spacing between pin stripes varies all over the map". Still not clear what the stripes were from 1892 -94 as the notes to the historical kit site have changed but no details or sources given . After that it was the two inch even stripes for 10 years. Can anyone find any team/player pics for seasons 1892-3 and 1893-1894?

A quick look at all the kits we've worn through the years can give a 'traditional' Sheffield United kit.

We've worn shirts with nine stripes more than any other, and with the centre stripe red and a collar of red, rather than V-neck or round collar. We've worn black shorts more than any other and black socks with a red or white (or a combination of the two) hooping across the top. Interestingly, none of our kits through the years have fit this tradition perfectly. The collar was different or the socks, or the middle stripe was not red, 1906-1910 is the closest followed by 1933-36, although sometimes those shirts had a white central stripe.

So, with a nod to artistic licence, here is a kit that includes all the traditional elements of a Sheffield United kit.

That's horrible and not very traditional at all, the stripes are different widths, the red is the wrong colour and it doesn't have any stripes on the sleeves.
