'Unique' Blades goals

Trevor Hockey v Millwall in April 1971

For about 80 minutes, the Blades couldnt break the deadlock against a stubborn Millwall defence. Keeper Bryan King held a cross from a corner and was about to boot the ball upfield, the players were running back to their positions except for Hockey who ran and dived towards the keeper, used his hands to knock the ball off King's hands and slotted the ball into the net. Some in the crowd laughed at the horseplay for a second or two before realising that the ref actually awarded the goal to stand. I couldnt understand what was going on as my dad pulled me up from the seat to cheer the goal and then I saw the ref pointing towards the centre spot despite furious Millwall players surrounding him. The photo below is Hockey being congratulated by Dearden, TC and Woody

Thanks guys. What I meant was - I'd never seen anybody do it before Saunders did. I've also never seen anybody do it since...

What I have seen is 100s of diving headers from 12yards out
I started this thread to promote a little nostalgic fun, and also to see whether the feeling in the back of my mind that Leon's goal was extraordinary would stand up to scrutiny. You are right that diving headers are not uncommon, but it is one thing to head a ball coming through the air, and quite another to judge the angle of bounce and speed of ball when the ball has hit the ground. Think of the problems created by bounce for a batsman at cricket, a tennis player, or a goalkeeper. I can't recall a goal scored by a player heading in a ball which has been crossed at speed and hit the ground. I am still inclined to think it was extremely skilfull, even though it looks quite easy when you see him do it.

Now that was unique (probably).

Saunders goal should've been disallowed for ungentlemanly conduct.

No it shouldn't, there's nothing in the rules to say you can't throw the ball to an opposing player as long as your feet are behind the line and the ball is thrown from over your head then it's a perfectly legal throw in. The goalkeepers fault for turning his back and cannot be classed as ungentlemanly conduct. First class goal and great awareness from Saunders.

what i remember was think morris put him through as he wrong footed the keeper edwards then walked up with the ball put is arm up to the kop and scored. if anyone knows bill brealey he tells a great story as he has chatted to the keeper ray cashley

Deano in the 88/89 promotion season scored twice somehow flicking the ball up and over the keeper from crosses that were low and hard,Leon's first v Hull, how he got his foot into that position to guide the cross past the keeper, ruddy marvellous
Deano v Bury and Wigan.
Cresswell when some goalie was fannying about the "old head" ran back onto the pitch and headed the ball out of his hands and slotted it home .
V Plymouth Argyle.

Both wrong. What Saunders did wasn’t considered ungentlemanly conduct at the time, but it would be now.

As for unique goals, how about Hoyland bundling the ball over the line accidentally using his hand? Or against us, the fourth in that bizarre Scunthorpe match when Simmo bowled the ball out against their player taking all the pace off it and giving him an open goal.

Montys at Tranmere unique as totally out of character for a traffic cone.

You must have missed the November 2001 home fixture against Birmingham when Montgomery scored one and also put a great ball into the box from which Peschisolido scored.

But the truly unique goal from that game was Brown's. He must have been at least 35 yards out, central to the goal and really leathered it. I don't think I have ever seen a shot dip so much as that one. An absolutely fantastic goal. Better than any of his stunning strikes in the following legendary 2002-3 season.

Goalie put the ball on the ground and stood there, Cresswell ran from behind him and took the ball to roll it into the net. Home against Plymouth, 2010. Goals are usually disallowed if the ball is knocked out of the keeper's hand.

Billy Sharp's shoulder goal vs SISU a couple of seasons ago when all their fans were bleating about the ref and how good the football they were playing compared to the 'neanderthal Blades way' :)

Also notable is the fact that Peschisolido scored two that day - against the team he wife helped run!
