Under 23s V Portsmouth

Good luck to our lads as they head off to Havant to play a cup game against Portsmouth. At this stage of the tournament the home team usually try to play their ties at their main stadium,not a non league ground. Havant is famous for my wife and I seeing 'Of Human Bondage' at the local cinema in 1964 Hope the team can enhance the good memories i have of the place. Game is played to a conclusion, no replay. Be interesting to hear the team news for this game, we need to get back to winning ways.

I think the team they have had to put out tonight is poor on the clubs part.

Semi final of Central cup a few weeks ago and we put out a side of u18s and futures players.
Then tonight the same.

It really shows that the club don't give a toss about winning U18s or 23s silverware.

I always thought winning trophies was all an excellent way of learning the game.

For the watchers of the 23s team it has just left the season totally flat as I am sure some of the regular 23s players will feel exactly the same !!

Take your point Larky but Wilder must think the here and now is more important than progress in the competition ,the focus is obviously on the run in to

Yep. We have one target in mind with 100% focus. Cups might be a higher priority next year...

I take your point also Finlay.

But Brooks, Reed playing in an in house is not going to promote either to the first team this season.
Playing a few squad players tonight would in no way be at the detriment of our promotion push.

Thanks for the information. The team was a big surprise particularly the absence of Eastman, Brooks and Reed the young team must have performed well to keep the score to 1 - 0. The opponents were the Portsmouth reserve team who had won against Everton and are having a good season

This would presumably be the friendly for fringe players.
Which is a good idea but surely they could have left actual U23's playing in a competitive U23 cup tie and fleshed out the friendly team with U18's if necessary?

None of first team squad involved Wilder obviously wanted to focus on what's in front of them.
Could be all about bonding,Wilder is big on that.Not about being Disciples but trusting him to do what's best for the club.Ime sure if asked the question he would give an answer

I'm pretty sure the U23's lifting a trophy would do way more good for morale,as well as rewarding them for a brilliant season which would resonate throughout the club.
The presence of Reed and McNulty at a post training lunch IMO is utterly irrelevant and not the best use of their purpose. I would be very interested to hear Wilders rationale on this one.

So we could have played say Long, Wilson and Clarke as overage players last night and Long, Hussey and Scougall on Thursday.

Do Chapman and McNulty qualify as U23 anyway? Who else needs a game? There have been loads of recent U23 matches they could have played in to stay match fit.

I can only assume that these friendlies are 'soft' games designed to maintain fitness whilst not risking the players by exposing them to proper challenges that might injure them.
CW has looked to minimise risk throughout the season, to take as few gambles as possible, so I guess this is the same again. Why risk a fringe player that we may need to help us over the line?
