Saturday 9 July: Netherlands vs Sweden (Group C, 20:00)

Got a spare adult and child on the south stand for this if anyone is interested.

Saturday 9 July: Netherlands vs Sweden (Group C, 20:00)
Wednesday 13 July: Sweden vs Switzerland (Group C, 17:00)
Sunday 17 July: Switzerland vs Netherlands (Group C, 17:00)
Tuesday 26 July: Semi-final (20:00)

Also, anyone who compares men's football with women's clearly doesn't understand.

There are physical differences in athleticism and output. Any comparison is ridiculous. It's a different game.

If you don't like it, don't watch it.

I agree.
Why in football do we have to compare it to the men’s game ? Tennis, athletics, hockey and many others don’t suffer from this odd stance, so why football ?
Those playing for their country are well trained athletes with a lot of technical skills, but don’t pretend that they can or would want to play against men’s teams.
As Pompey says if you don’t like then don’t watch it, but don’t then knock it !

Hit the nail on the head.

People naturally compare but that’s unfair, it’s almost a totally different sport, different culture, different atmosphere inside the stadium.

If you try to compare on a like for like basis then of course womens football is a bit shit but that’s too simplistic as its not a like for like scenario. If you treat it like a different sport then there are many positives and you can understand why it’s being promoted so heavily.

Problem with that is some of the people who promote it so heavily, particularly the BBC, do try to push it as equal to men's football, which just undermines trying to get people to take it seriously
The only sport to me that feels as if it's on an even keel to the men's game is Tennis, in terms of recognising the players and the standing that they have. People like the Williams sisters and Sharapova (pre-drugs) were huge stars in sport generally, not just women's sport.

A wider issue around the quality of the game is the pool of players to draw from - some countries will be fielding some right duffers to make the numbers up. There are various issues around girls packing in sports when they're teenagers which need addressing which are more to do with society in general with football, as a global game, falling victim to. The more people you have competing for places, the better the quality will be.

Even things now like women having to wear all white at Wimbledon, not the most practical colour around your time of the month. One mishap like that could put a self-conscious teenage girl off from taking part in any kind of sport forever.

Don't know if it's been mentioned but looks like some kind of Fans Zone on Devonshire Green it's all fenced off.
They have also put gates at the bottom of Eldon Street off West St, Egerton Street and Milton Street, so looks like they will be blocking those off.

I'd say athletics is the same and I wonder how much of that is due to the events sharing the same events. Of course the best women are not as good athletes as the best men ( gymnastics aside!) but everyone has the same chance to perform to their best. Football goals are built for 6 foot+ men and I think that's a bit part of why women's keepers can be made to look shite.

Football goals were introduced when the average height of a man was a lot smaller than now, probably equivalent to female height now.

Then we have got used to how 6 foot+ keepers play...either way it's a huge flaw in the women's game for me. Cricket uses smaller boundaries and it doesn't matter one bit.

I think alot of the comparison comes from the domestic setup the "women's FA Cup" and the teams are linked like Sheffield United Women, Manchester United Women, Arsenal Women etc. I think the part I didn't understand was in 2013 when Doncaster Belles were relegated into the 2nd tier and replaced by Man City Women. Doncaster were at the top table of womens football by their own right just because they didn't have a massive investor as part of a group of clubs shouldn't mean they were relegated. I personally don't watch women's football but don't have a problem with them playing another thought I have is why is the pinacle for a female referee to referee in men's football? By plucking out the top officials it restricts the growth of the game, people say they are like different sports and in that way they should be treated as such.

Spot on pommpey.
The skill factor is gradually evening out as no reason woman don't have the capacity to play including tactics..
As you say the physicality is not there to match the men's game.
As a game GermanyvDenmark was 1st class probably as good as it gets at this time in its evolution,No way will we win it Germany,Denmark,Norway are miles ahead of us.

Now go and prove me wrong !! Would be great for the Woman's game if we did.

Agree - but the notion of 'matching' the men's game (which we have become so accustomed to watching) is wrong. Women aren't in competition with men within the game. It's like matching a flyweight boxer with a heavyweight in terms of skills and physique, or pitching a novice against a pro in golf. Because of the difference in approach, the game is played differently and yes, there are airkicks, yes, sometimes the goalkeepers aren't what we see in the higher male professional leagues but for that matter, we have to properly allow for this or just stop watching if it offends us so much. Where goalkeepers are concerned, you simply will not get a 5'10" female (which is above average height in this country) reaching a shot that a 6'4" male will, especially considering physique and physiological dynamics. And no, making the goals smaller is something I doubt the Women's FA would countenance in any circumstance. And the amount of 'errors' we see are regrettable, but the game is still in it's relative technical infancy with less than 20 years of true professionalism and proper grass roots investment in it. We have to allow for this and allow for development and growth. There are players - Lucy Bronze for example - who is almost Pirlo-like in her play and rarely has a shit game. Steph Hougthon and Millie Bright are also seasoned players at this level and if some of the critics and nay-sayers would care to pull on a kit and go up against them, they'd find out what it's like being ran ragged in fitness and having the ball denied for long periods. I'd fucking hate to have the job of marking Beth Mead or Lauren Hemp for 90 long minutes or try to stop Ellen White knocking in a hat trick and taking the piss as I sit on my arse.

I do believe there is still a sense of impotent male outrage underlying some people's opinions about the women's game which quickly manifests itself as dismissive lampooning. Once people get over themselves and understand the competition is in getting women's football properly recognised, attended and funded and we will possibly never see a female lining up alongside a male in the professional game then they will be allowed to move on in their own direction and under their own steam. Football isn't just a blokes game (what sport actually is?) and women's football is here to stay. Get used to it.

I think the problem for women's football comes from the media as much as anything else. It is treated in a patronising manner but not in the way you might think. Its a bit like when rich countries try and provide less well of countries guidance on how rhey should be. Well intentioned maybe but flawed.

Laura Woods on talksport was saying the other day that it must be frustrating for players to be constantly asked about the "amazing" evolution of the game as if the womens game needs to be on a pathway to having the same status as men's football.High quality sport is happening right now.

And the saturation in the media is feeding insecure men to troll like fuck.

The only thing that annoys me about Women’s football is when you see “click bait” headlines saying things like “Blades sign new striker “.

You excitedly click on it, only to find it’s our Women’s team who’ve signed someone.

But that’s the fault of the headline writers, not the Women’s game.

Live on BBC1 from 19:30.
Has a match from Bramall Lane ever been shown live on prime time BBC1 before?
Highest ever viewing figures for a match from Bramall Lane?
I highly doubt many people will be tuning in to watch Sweden v Netherlands, expect the attendance to be something similar to our cup games too.

Going slightly off topic, but isn’t one of the main reasons we get overlooked for men’s Euros/World Cup bids is that we Don’t have a park next to the ground (unlike a certain other team in Sheffield), yet here we are, cordoning off Devonshire Green, about a 10 minute stroll from Bramall Lane and surrounded (well, sort of) enough bars, cafes and restaurants to suit most tastes? Anyone would think there was an agenda against using the Lane for the men’s tournaments😀😀

This is how ticket availability looks right now.

There's been no mention that we've had to reduce capacity. They've been releasing tickets for the Kop in blocks, but all other stands appear to be sold out.

I like the women’s game. No diving or shit housing and v competitive, plus England have a chance to win it.

Yes not diving drama queens like the men....and the game isn't so spoiled by money.

Male keepers usually get specialist coaching from a fairly young age whereas coaching girls is relatively new. How many tall young lasses have received proper keeper coaching from a young age? I’d guess not that many in this country although I assume that’s now changing and has probably been improving a lot over the last ten years.

There’s also been a historic perception that it’s very difficult to make a living as a female player in the U.K. The most athletic girls, those who want to be professional sportspeople would tend to focus on sports they can make a living at, like athletics, or tennis and some of these may have made decent keepers.

Again, with the strides made recently in increasing the popularity of the game and the establishment of professional women’s football, I’d expect things to change.

My prediction is that within the next decade, there will be a big improvement in women keepers, as girls who are now maybe 10 or 11 realise they can have a career in football and receive better coaching.

Possibly, the only thing I can think of is Devonshire Green is not big enough for the Mens tournament. I was surprised they are doing it for the women's to be honest, can't see many being there tonight. Maybe UEFA insisted on it.
Taking the Wife out for a Afternoon drink up Broomhill today, might suggest we walk back down and have a look later.
Just to see how busy it is you understand, not to see if there are many Dutch or Swedish ladies about.

I don’t think they are showing the match. It seems to be more of a pre-match “party” thing

Saw some very nice Swedish and Dutch ladies in town this morning.....
Very pretty
I told them it's maggots not magnet.....then the police took me away...

Just going on the fact there's only 500k tickets sold. 220k of them are England's games and the final. So 280k between the other 27 games is it really says it all. Very little interest.
