Noticed Reece York got a move the other day Phil... thought he would have got a better club though. Always seems to be scoring from midfield.
It's generally "a ladder". League clubs won't take loans unless the player has done a bit in non-league. Reece needs to do stuff at Hyde. And, then he'll get a chance in the EFL.

Has Callum Gribbin played much yet Phil and, if so, what's he been like?
Callum plays "most weeks" for the U23s. I quite like him. Obvs got a good skill set. All left foot. But good on his right when he has to. Very calm. Good at bringing high balls down. He's been setting up in midfield. Mainly attacking midfield. But, he's OK at getting around the park. My main frustration is he's a "move it on player". Looks for space. Takes the ball. Controls it well. But, mainly just ... moves it on. In my opinion he needs to hurt teams more. He seems capable of doing that. But, it hasn't really happened yet ... move it on. Reece York (in general) and Zak Brunt (tonight) look far more threatening breaking through the line & making things happen.

Who do you think, if any, are closest to breaking into the the first team

The U23's need work, hardly ever win.

It's not really an accurate depiction of circumstance as each game there can be as many as 4-5 first teamers playing and sometimes when they do they don't see it as more of a run out or an attempt to regain fitness. Some teams might have none others a load etc.

the U23 league is one of the softest and unrealistic levels there currently is in football and any player who is looking to establish themselves should get out on loan and get real experience.

I never like answering that exact question. But, I don't mind chucking my views in. We have Academy Youngsters out on loan with EFL clubs - Slater, Parkhouse, Dewhurst, Smith, Norrington-Davies, (Eastwood has recently returned from a loan). They are clearly the most "advanced". We also have Academy Youngsters out on loan with non-league & Irish League clubs. Mallon, Graham, Sheppeard, Broadbent, Greaves, York. They are clearly the next rung down. The ones who do well would be looking for an EFL loan next time around. Now. None of those are anywhere near our Premier League squad. I really like Norrington-Davies. I really like Dewhurst. I'm not MAD. I'm not going to say they'll make it at EFL level. I'm not going to say they'll eventually get in our PL Squad. I'm going to simply say, I really like them. At the next level down, I really like Reece York. That very young U23 side turning out tonight have a LOT of development needed before they get anywhere in the game. That said, I really like Harry Boyes. And, I feel Zak Brunt is developing very quickly. But, it's very difficult to get home grown youngsters into a PL Squad. Realistically none of those I've mentioned are anywhere near breaking through. Any good?

Not for Utd. We virtually NEVER play First Teamers in U23s. VERY rare.

Mt friendly neighbourhood Rochdale supporter (and FA coach) reckons N-D has a future in football and believes he is too good for Rochdale to get a sniff. Tyler Smith scored at the weekend.

always wondered... why carrier bag firm?
It's a self piss taking name. Supposed to conjure up the same image as trainspotter, anorak, geek, nerd. Small groups of supporters. Collecting programmes, teamsheets, tickets for their collection. "Who has Parkhouse signed for?" "Does anyone know why Oli Greaves isn't playing?" "Have you seen any teamsheets Phil?" "Has that game against Swallownest U19s been switched to Tuesday?". All while carrying mysterious battered Carrier Bags. Fuck knows what they've got in there. But, as soon as someone says Zivkovic is the first player starting with a Z. Boom. You'll all need us then. Rustle. Rustle. Rustle. Here's the teamsheet proving he's not even the first Zivkovic to be on the books at The Lane. The Carrier Bag Firm to the rescue. Again......

Can I gently point out that .... the Carrier Bag Firm are obviously against sponsorship in football. Game Stealing Bastards as we call them. We are militantly Against Modern Football. As you'd imagine. Also, no Carrier Bagger has the time for a job, let alone running a company. We live on State handouts & the proceeds of occasional teamsheet sales on eBay. But, yes, it is a good name. Thanks for taking an interest.

I'm sure poor old Ball_Sup (Phil) gets tired of answering that question. Seems to crop up on every U23 match report.

If you're asking because you want to see academy products in the first team, you should perhaps temper your expectations: In my opinion, the prospect of seeing any of these young lads in the first team is extremely slim.

Not to say there is no chance we'll see any, ever. But at this point, a player would have to be an undeniable talent, and be already to make a difference on the pitch to get anywhere near our matchday squad. I'm not sure we've had a player of that calibre since Walker, as even someone like Maguire needed 5 or 6 years of football (mainly league 1) before he was premier league standard.

There's a decent chance that a player like Norrington-Davies could continue his climb up the leagues via loans, if he keeps up his form, he'd probabaly have a decent chance of getting a loan to the Championship next season. Even then, there's still quite a gap to breach, you only have to look at someone like Callum Robinson, who was one of the better players in the championship last season, who still looks to be quite some way off PL standards.

To be honest, the best chance of seeing an academy graduate in the side (other than Sharp or Jagielka) would be if Bournemouth were relegated, and we took Ramsdale off them.

If we want to see our home-grown youngsters make it in the first team, we should start be investing some of our new found riches into the academy.
Even then, with the exception of Man Utd and Chelsea, who you could argue have been playing academy graduates out of necessity, rather than choice, most PL academies fail to provide more than 3 players for the first team squad, with plenty of said players getting minimal minutes on the pitch.

Thanks Kanye
As it happens, I don't mind the questions that sometimes get fired at me. I sort of manipulate the question/answer. Are any of them close to the first team? .... usually gets answered as .... the ones I like. Unashamedly, I go to Academy games because it is great fun. New breweries. New pubs. New beers. Chatting shit n bollocks with the Carrier Bag Firm. And watching lads in red n white stripes, who want to play, chucking the lot in & going mental when it all works for them. Relaxed, casual atmosphere, exchanging views & info with opposition fans. I tend NOT to view it as "he's got potential" or "he might make the first team". I'm more "go on mate, get round him & whip one in".

I can tell you who has played well. But, I can't tell you who has potential. It's great fun.

A lot has changed since the EPPP rules a few years ago. We are now category 2

I am aware of the change, hence why I'm advocating we spend money on our academy to upgrade it to the highest possible level, on a par with our rivals.

Its time our U/23/s got a money spinner , against the pigs in the elf trophy , next year would be good , :)if all goes well
Only Category 1 Academies are invited to play in the Leasing.Com, formerly Checkatrade, Trophy. Our Academy is Category 2 & not eligible to enter.

Apologies if this is another Frequently Answered Question Phil, but is that in itself unusual at this level, or is it a strategy that a lot of teams use (not playing First Teamers in the U23s)? Just curious if our approach was at all unique or it's just the done thing to just play actual U23s.

Basically, I'm not in a good position to answer that. I pay scant attention to our opponents in the bleeding Premier League, let alone in U23 Professional Development League. I often go to England games & don't know which club sides the players are with. I'm not much use really. However, my "sense" is that most PDL teams lean towards development players rather than first teamers or fringers. That is a similar approach to us. Recently, we've been a cull academy. "He's not getting anywhere, let him go, ship a younger kid in". Our changed circumstances mean we can loan out a bit more rather than cull. But, we continue to play very young U23 sides. Six of that side last night played in the FA Youth Cup, ie are U18 eligible. Three more Youth Cuppers were on the U23 bench last night.
