What a game that was. Our lads were outstanding. Playing against a Cat 1 Academy full of professionals who play Chelsea in their next game, We took them on and won after extra time.
The first half was even with just one mistake resulting in a Derby goal to separate the sides. Sam Graham didn't appear for the second half resulting on a restructured defence that allowed David Parkhouse to come on up front. Now we were looking for the equaliser with patient aggressive play coming out from the back mainly through Callum Semple who gets better with every game he plays, making up for the games he has missed, no doubt. Callum was the recipient of an assault that saw Derby reduced to 10.
This was a good Derby side who organised to protect their lead but our patient aggression earned a just reward when Simeon Oure hammered in a shot from yet another cross from Semple. Now I have not been over impressed recently with Oure, probably just me missing Jake Wright, but that strike was a bit special. From then to the finish Derby threw everything at us. We even had Jake Eastwood making a fine stop from a header from the Derby keeper, it was that kind of game.
So impressed with everyone of our players who now meet another Cat 1 Academy Newcastle in the next round.
Finally a bit of praise for our coaches particularly Trav. His move to pull back Regan Slater with Harvey Gilmour moving to an unfamiliar left back position just gave us that edge in defence to see us through.
Could go on about this display but I'll finish by congratulating our young team in putting on a display that was a credit to our club and Academy.
I wonder what our man Phil would have made of this display but unfortunately I hear he is drinking beer and watching cricket else where

Really good read there mate.

What sort of player might you describe Simeon Oure as?

Thanks Baw Heid, sounds a great game

THe only report I could find this morning was on the Derby website; they had a slightly different view of that...

Bogle went up for an aerial duel and after vocal appeals from the Blades, he was given his marching orders.

They would say that. It happened right in front of me and the Derby player went through Semple with his elbow raised and left our man flat out on the ground. Semple did recover after long attention and the incident did not affect his play in fact I think it gave a boost to all our players. It is worth mentioning that Derby were pushing to unsettle us right from the first ball and I thought the ref treated them initially very leniently.

As I said Oure is finding it difficult to fit into a position that was filled by Wright and Jordan Hallam. He seems to need constant coaching from the side and he gets it. A bit lightweight to me but his strike last night shows he has something in his locker and something like that can sometimes be the catalyst to push the lad on. He uses bright orange boots so no hiding place for the lad, Someone buy him a black pair please
He is quick but seems to lose concentration its worth remembering that our Academy play with a high work ethic that starts with the front players being in the faces of defenders and I would say his work rate has improved although when Parkhouse came on as a more traditional Centre Forward, who can hold up and lay off the ball, Oure seemed to benefit from his presence.

Just one other fact Balham The ref was 12yds away, linesman 6yds on the right and 3rd official 6yds on the left, all with perfect views. Personally I think they had decided to rattle Semple and it back fired. Just my opinion

Last time I saw Oure was v Burnley for the u18's at Shirecliffe, scored two goals in a 5-2 win,he played mainly wide right and showed glimpses of a very good player, raw but loads of potential imo

My only gripe with the 23’s is how they get messed around, many of those who play are 2nd year scholars or first year pro’s trying to forge a career. First team players drop down and tbf don’t want to be there and often go through the motions letting the regulars down and not setting the best example to the young lads. Then we get to the business end of the season and we play trialists from anywhere and everywhere who simply aren’t good enough, our own players ie Jordy Hallam and now Young Bomber are learning their trade away from the club for the time being ( don’t really have too much of a problem with that ) but it leaves us short when we have a realistic chance of finishing top 2 in the PMLD2 and also getting a long way in the Premier league cup ask anyone of goes lads who played the 18’s final last year if that mattered to them or not. Ok so winning something in the 23’s might not have any value financially but it enforces a winning mentality amongst those involved and the most important thing in football.....winning. It would be nice to see the likes of Cal Semple, Ty Smith, Harvey Gilmour And Regan Slater win something to reward their efforts and hard work over the season.

I would agree with you although a few of the first team players did help the young ones when they played. Kennedy, Scougall and Long come to mind .I hope we do not play trialists in the PL Cup games or in the finals of the league this season

Could not agree more.

Some of the first team squad effort with the 23s doesn’t show any of our young players any respect.
I bet the 23s squad would rather Evans, Carrathers, Freeman didn’t bother turning up at all.

Heneghan, Eastwood get stuck in and support the youngsters.

Always wonders what Binnionand John Dungworth think to it. Well pissed off I bet.
