That's partly because if you get a yellow in rugby you're off the pitch for 10 minutes and if you backchat the referee at all you will end up in the sin bin. It's a major disadvantage trying to defend a man down.They have it on an individual level but in that situation with Rugby although I agree it works well in Rugby, the referee has more of a rapport with the captain and the talking is done through him. Something that could also push out back chat and swarming around a referee.
If the footballing authorities were serious about clamping down on the haranguing of the referees then sin bins for yellow cards would be a good place to start.
