Like lots of others I thought it wasn't a great appointment but it was during the season in Div 3 that I changed my mind. The performance against Newcastle was great. Roberts and Bryson with Deane and Agana.
So many great games.
The ZDS 7-2 was one I missed. I was at University in Liverpool and decided not to go home for the game as it was nearly the end of term and the Liverpool match was on the Saturday.
The arrival of Hodges, the 7 games winning and the defeat at Forest ending it and Andy Sayers playing in that game.
We took a Forest supporting school friend to the game where Gannon scored that absolute belter.
By the end it was bad and I hated the chanting of 'Bassett Out' at places like Derby County and at home to Huddersfield.

Top 10 Bassett games

1. Leicester 2 United 5 5/5/90
2. United 2 Wednesday 0 17/11/91
3. Wednesday 1 United 3 11/3/92
4. United 6 Spurs 0 2/3/93
5. United 2 Livepool 0 28/3/92
6. United 6 Chester 1 17//9/88
7. United 2 Man Utd 1 15/9/92
8. United 2 Man Utd 1 14/2/93
9, United 2 Blackburn 2 (won 5-3 on pens) 16/3/93
10. Forest 2 United 5 1/2/92
Does anyone recall the away game at Oldham, we won 2-0 I think and they were unbeaten at home for around 30 games

In that case I hope we never sign anyone called John. After all, there were three Johns in the side that lost to Walsall on 2nd May 1981.

And then John Gannon, Ebbrell, Hunt, Stead, Reid, -Joe O Toole, Fortune, Newby etc. Some were OK but on balance, the name John has not been too kind to us over the years. Let’s stick with Brians, Danes, Alans, Paddys, Chedwyns etc.

I didn't want him here because I hated Wimbledon's "professionalism", they were disgusting at times on their way up. However Bassett soon became my No.1 United manager and still is, by a country mile.

His biggest assets? Knowing a player and bargain transfer signings. Organisation and motivation allied to a playing style which became ingrained in the mentality of the players. How exciting that playing style was!!
Wonderful years when the manager signed players with character without spending a fortune and not one of them left anything out on the pitch.

Don’t forget his ability to harness an incredible team spirit. His self-deprecating sense of humour already referred to played a part in that. He was more than willing to be the butt of the jokes if it got the team bonding.

A rarity - an inspirational leader who was "one of the lads" too.

So many fans post on messageboards talking about what managers are doing right and wrong (I'm guilty too) without properly appreciating what a difference charisma makes. They can make as many correct decisions as they want but if they can't inspire and harness a mentality in their players, they're unlikely to succeed. I think that's one of the reasons Robson was such an awful manager and looked like an issue with Weir.

I don't know about Chedwyn bringing us much luck!

And Alan Woodward and Alan Hodgkinson both featured for us in two relegation seasons each.

Best steer clear of anyone called Don or Paul as well. Also think Mike and Steve are a bit dodgy too. And as for Alex, steer clear!

And most of all, let's forever avoid any future Nyrons!

Perhaps we should only sign players who's names are Glynn, Patrick Anthony Ozalinka and Che Zach Everton Fred

The lob was in the 2-0 win at Oldham. His goal at Luton was a firm ground shot after beating the offside trap

That game took place when Luton were banned from having away fans. I had a ticket via a friend who supports Luton. After we went 1-0 up, I remember hearing the Greasy Chip Butty song echoing around the ground. There must have been hundreds of Blades in there!

The game after that was away at Arsenal (I think they were defending champions). We went 1-0 up, only the fourth or fifth goal they'd conceded at home that season, but collapsed after a dodgy penalty and lost 4-1.

.

A Luton supporter from my work got tickets for me and my dad and made me promise not to cheer if we score a goal! I broke my promise after Deane scored but none of the Luton fans complained about me cheering the goal!

I stood on the Hillsborough Kop (on my own) for the 3-1 derby win in 1992 as I couldn't get a ticket for the away end. There had been quite a bit of violence in the stand, so I kept quiet on the first two goals (lots of Tim Henman-style fist pumps out of sight though). However, when you watch the goals, you can see my arm go up in the air when Bobby Davison gets his second!

Davison became a cult hero overnight (in my books at least) for that brace against the pigs. Loved that game. Loved it.

That was a brilliant night, we were In the shitty uncovered corner terrace, and got pissed on all night, wouldn't change a thing..

Sure we sang "we beat the scum 3/1" that night, pigs at work were upset we'd labelled them scum.......

We might have done but I also remember the chant "We beat the scum 5-1", which we did on aggregate over the season.

The young Geordie Blade's arm aloft as Bobby Davison's diving header hits the back of the net...

Didn't the pigs around you have a go at you for celebrating?

Remember singing this too, Leppings Lane and beyond till our numbers dwindled, stood in the open terrace on the corner got absolutely soaked, watching it back even now 20 odd years ago still gives me goosebumps, and a hero was born that night, Sir Bobby of Davison. I also had the t shirt they used to sell outside the Lane shortly after, with we beat the scum 2-0 on the front and 3-1 on the back. Happy days indeed.

You'll enjoy this...

April Fools Day 1995....guess who the biggest joke and fools were made of????

Oh yes...

:D

Glorious, but only my second favourite Pigs-Forest game at Hillsborough. The all time greatest was:

(with bonus footage of baffled pigs at the end trying to work out whether or not they stayed up)

If you were in the kop - you didn't happen to see a nutter to your RIGHT in the Pigs North stand with a Blades umbrella, jabbing it furiously at the pigs kop each time we scored a goal?

That nutter was me.

What an interesting night - the sight of the yellow balloons seen in full view from the North stand was something that will stay with me forever.

What a night to celebrate and to be sat among a load of piggies...............FAB-U-LUS.

UTB

Proud to say I was a at both the derby games although the evening kick-off in the second match meant I cant remember too much - I CAN remember drinking in the Gate pre-match with an Owl who is no longer with us (RIP) and another Blade who was and still is my best friend and who most of you will know albeit in a much more formal capacity down at the Lane these days !!! Not sure if it was the lack of a snout and trotters or the Blades Enamel lapel badges we wore proudly that night but we were none too popular!! I do know the bouncer on the door looked mightily relieved when we eventually staggered out the place...... :) Brilliant times and victories over your bitterest of enemies make the bad times more bearable !!!
