Because he wasn't able to take the step up, one of McC's biggest mistakes.

And we wouldn't have sacked him, a 350K pay off would have been a good deal for both parties.
How did you know he wouldn't be able to make the step up?

Mate, come one, considering the budget he had to play with (no to mention the Tevez Affair, The Hulse Injury, etc, etc). The fact that we only got relegated in the final 40 minutes of the season, and on goal difference (by one goal!). The guy is a fucking genius! But I understand, not everyone likes owd Colin. But you've got to admit, they were some of the best times ever as a Blade

He wasted his January budget on a bunch of useless articles when we needed one premiership quality midfielder.

He spent the best part of £12m in fees alone. At the time that could've bought four decent quality players. We spent over 25% of it on Luton Shelton, Ahmed Faty & Mikele Leigertwood. We picked up David Sommeil, Li Tie, Paul Gerrard and Mamadou Seck on frees. Given the choice of them or herpes, I'd have gone for the blisters. :)

Great memories. UTB

We had one magical season where individuals were fantastic and we had my favourite ever United match (Forest 2nd leg). I'm still sticking to my point that Warnocks core football is dour percentage stuff and his attitude is awful. Hed very much run his course by the time he left
This is basically how I see it too. I didn't enjoy the football but I respected what he was trying to do on a budget. I differ in that I couldn't see the point of him leaving after we got relegated. He was the sort of guy we should have been appointing at that moment - even tho back then his reputation was not quite as good as it is now.

Tbh, Curtis comes across thick as fuck. He's had so many little swipes at us over the years, but then trys winning us back over with stupid immature tweets about Wednesday . Can't be doing with it.

I think he had to leave because he was sick of United and the club/fans were tired of his "woe is me" act.

His ego outgrew his ability a long time ago. I think he'd have been fired by Xmas if he'd stayed. He was the right type of manager for the situation - but not with United. All sense of humility had left him by that time

Emailed him complaining under Robsons tenure. He called me for 30 minutes talking it through. Absolute top bloke.

That is how I saw it that season too. All managers have their level and in my opinion Warnock is a good Championship manager. It will be interesting to see how Cardiff handle him if they get promoted as his record in the top flight is poor.

“Poor” flatters it beyond recognition. He’s out of his depth in the Premiership, him...

I think appointing Robson was the most damaging.

Not a good one, of course, but if we’d had the courage to sack OBN and appointed a manager with some Premiership know-how, Robson may well not have happened.

Yes. Not sacking the latter before the Premier season being the most damaging of all.

Without hindsight, I'm not sure many fans would have wanted Warnock sacked after getting us promoted. Except for the mighty oracle that is Pinchy of course.

He wasn't sacked, his contract wasn't renewed which is a little different and it was after relegation.

The promotion 12 months previously had been blown by his poor buys and negative tactics.

In retrospect of course he should have stayed. Anyone would have been better than Mogadon Man, but it feeled right to me that Warnock should leave in May 2007.

The point I was responding to was to Pinchy stating Warnock should have been sacked on promotion to the PL in May 2006 (not following relegation), which as I say, with hindsight may have been a positive move although we'd never be able to say exactly what would have happened because we don't know who we would have got in for that PL season without Warnock.

Although to add to the point about hindsight, at that time Warnock had never had a go at the PL, so we weren't to know how much he didn't understand what was needed and perhaps romantically thought he deserved a go at it as a fellow Blade getting us promoted.

I wonder what we'd say about Wilder if he failed in his first season in the PL.

All good points but Wilder wouldn’t go down with a whimper and everybody knows that.

Completely agree and I do think (maybe again romatically) that Wilder would give it a better shot.

I thought the same about Warnock at the time though if I'm honest, I thought he was the gritty and determined motivator we needed, the major difference to me is which style of football is more suited to a weaker premier league team, defensive, make it tough and hope to catch some luck on the break or by going long; or is it the attacking football we've come to love with Wilder at the helm. I know things have moved on a bit but I'm not sure which style is more likely to get points on the board, I'm certain that the 'score one more than you' approach wouldn't get us many points in the PL.

So which is it ?: "before the Premier season" or in January.
Agree it was apparent by then that he was 'not waving but drowning' although paradoxically we could (should) have stayed up even on that last day.
Colin's biggest failing that season was without doubt the (abject) attitude / approach vs Villa

Wasn't Robson appointed as "that manager with some Premiership know-how"?
We'd also been 'keen' on (s)Megson who would tick the same box along with 'successful' promotion [back] to Prem on his CV !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
