With the loss of 2 out of the 3 holy trinity (Coutts and now Duffy) plus the obvious upgrade in opposition, I think we can wave bye bye to the slow, steady, intricate build up of Tuftyball Mk I.

We now have a better target man, pace and powerful runners, plus different types of midfield players. How do you think Tuftyball will evolve? Will we still overload with centre backs etc? I loved Duffy and Coutts - but Tuftyball Mk I was specifically made to play to their strengths. We have moved on, how will our trademark style evolve?

I think it's a good question.

We're not going to dictate possession anywhere near like we did in those days. That means we're going to need to be a little more incisive and clinical, and have the ability to break more than we used to.

Pace is more important to us now than it was.

We'll still try and overload where possible but not as much in some games simply as we won't have the ball as much.

Clearly we're sitting a little deeper and not pressing as high from the off as we regularly used to. We saw that in a few games last season, Leeds, WBA, pigs etc. Be interesting to see if we maintain that at home.

Exactly mate. We didn't play Tuftyball Mk I against some of the big hitters (lol pigs aren't big hitters ) last season. And we certainly didn't play it yesterday. This season all the teams are big hitters - with some being bigger than others, obviously. It will be very interesting to see how our trademark style evolves.

I think Chrissie has now got all his bases covered. The Prem not only has the most talented players, it also has the most talented managers too. It won’t be long before the top teams get the measure of tuftyball. Yes our style might surprise a few teams the first time we play them but they’ll be ready for us in the return fixture........So we need all the options we can get.

We had about 97 % possession agaisnt the swine

We will have a lot less possession this season and spend a lot more of our game time being pushed back. Therefore pace up top (and a bit of height with McBurnie) will absolutely be key. There is a reason why we have gone for the Moose and Swiss Family who both have pace to burn. Maupay would have been nice too, but that ship has sailed.

Not dissimilar to the first season back in the Championship. If we can surprise the majority before Christmas, then evolve the way we play, as we did in 2017/18 for the 2nd half of the season, we'll be in good shape for a middle of the table position, IMO.

If you look back to the first 15/20 mins yesterday I think most of the teams will be looking to hit us on the break as Bournemouth tried to. It was quite clear and evident from the off but it probably wont be the tactics of the bigger teams (Top 6). UTB

[EDIT] I'd also add, that the assumption that managers and clubs don't know EXACTLY what we're about prior to the first meeting is wide of the mark. Just as it was in the Champ. The trick is having an effective tactical response to the way we play, having the personnel able to adapt their own natural way of playing (we saw with Bournemouth that they played an unusual formation to match us) and getting all that right in the perfect storm of a 90 minute football match. We KNOW our system, other teams / managers are 100% aware of it but effectively nullifying it is a different proposition.

We were very different once Freeman came on. Expect more of that at home than away.

Palace will be interesting next week as they are primarily a counter attack team. Have to be careful at the back, but they'll be there for the taking.

Tuftyball was in evidence yesterday all over the pitch. Shearer commented on it on MOD how both our wing backs were on the edge of the oppositions penalty area at times and also looked at the heat maps of JOC and Bash. Tuftyball got better when we brought a number 10 on towards the end of the game.

Tuftyball works best when we play 3-4-1-2. It wasn't designed around players, it is a formation that when you pick the right players it causes the opposition a lot of problems.

Yes at times over the last few seasons our build up play has been slow but that has been a mixture of having a lack of pace up front but also having players slow in thought in possession. When it works it is a thing of beauty. Remember the first 45 minutes against Villa at Home last season.

Howe changed his formation yesterday to deal with Tuftyball. That in itself is a compliment to how we play. Bournemouth fans didn't like it and felt they were not as free flowing as they usually are.

We may not have as much possession as we usually do away from home but that will also be down to playing a flat midfield three.

At Home the 3-4-1-2 Tuftyball system has to be used. I expect us to have a lot of possession at Home if we go down this route. We should not fear using it against the top 6 at Home. Teams will try to press our wing backs to negate the system and flood midfield. We have the option to change systems during the game including pushing Bash into midfield to counter this.

There is only 1 system and it has worked so far. The management and players need to retain their confidence in it. No need to change it now, it is our identity and will unsettle many teams in the league.

Mainly due to playing better pressing teams and having strikers at the top of the pitch with more pace.

We may see the ball played into the danger areas quicker from wide positions. Not sure playing triangles on the touchline for 5 minutes will work in this division.
