I was walking along Cherry Street towards the Kop when I saw the Piggies (as other have said around 40-50) coming along with a huge number of Blades giving them an escort....
There were two coppers inbetween the two groups and I didn't know what had gone off on Shoreham St, which explains the anger of the Blades behind.
A few Blades fans looked to have a go at the piggies (i believe the books would call this "steaming in"), which sparked the two coppers swinging batons and was quickly followed by two coppers on horseback tearing along from Bramall lane and about 20 coppers bringing up the rear from Shoreham.
I didn't see the background to this, but having seen "ring of steel" Police cordons set up on all side streets leading to Bramall lane, it looked like the Police adopted a lazy approach and allowed these idiots to get in amongst the Blades fans.
It seems that the Police Strategy was to Protect Wednesday fans, but gave little regard for offering the same level of protection to Blades fans and their families.
I was quick enough to realise who these guys were when they were coming towards me, so I go out of their way, but others walked through this group and got a little suprise and quickly got out of the way.
In general yesterday, there was a serious number of big hitters around, but in my opinion, the police took an extremely over the top approach with the cordon on Bramall lane. Segregating fans in this way does nothing to improve the integration of fans, it ensures that those intent on causing bother just find it elsewhere.
I did enjoy the atmosphere yesterday and makes me realise how much I love and hate the derbies, but they make it worth being a Blade, it was tense, it was verging on nasty and there was an edge which makes you think it could kick off at any moment. Both on and off the pitch
