I think you have to factor in the fitness of Sharp, McGoldrick, Duffy and Basham given their ages. And no offence to our players but you have to admit that Man City and Wolves both have better athletes in their squads and play in a less physically taxing style. I assume both teams probably rested players for cup games as well.
How many games has Barham missed through injury in the last 3 season's?

I know what you mean, but references to Drake etc. illustrate all that we've been doing wrong in this country - we live in a 'golden past' which probably never existed in the first place. People talk about us 'having the best police/army/navy etc. in the world' but it's nonsense. Without denigrating the brave efforts of our armed forces, do we really need them or is it just to keep our vain politicians at 'the top table'?

We regularly see tales of a couple of our planes 'seeing off' Russian surveillance planes, our already-out-of-date aircraft carriers etc. yet can't stop a few dinghies crossing the Channel every day. In my book, the best army/navy/air force in the world is the biggest and best-equipped. We're playing at it and if it came to a serious conflict, we wouldn't stand a chance.
we have nuclear weapons.. just thought i'd let you know ;) in the current world climate, biggest doesn't always mean best. seeing as set piece battles are currently a thing of the past, small units of highly trained, highly motivated troops are much more useful which is what Britain excels at.

But can you name a UK leader over the past few decades who would have actually used the red button? Certainly leaders - past and present - of China, USA and Russia would.

It's like the idot who carries a knife. Word gets out that they've got a knife but won't use it. Just makes them an 'easy target'. As for 'highly motivated' I can't see that lasting much longer when armchair generals and lawyers want to drag people - like Sgt. Blackman and those who fought in Northern Ireland - through the courts.

The thing is BB, our lack of foreign signings isn't due to a lack of an extensive scouting network, it's due to a conscious strategic decision, by those who run the team.

The miracles of the internet, mean that I could list 5 players in every position, currently playing in europe who are u21, who are worth looking at. That's 66 players.

That 66 could then be halved by people more knowledgeable than me, through 'footballing ocnatcts'. The remaining 33 could be scouted by 10 scouts (when I say scouts, I mean ex-pro's/trusted people) over the course of a month, very easily. We don't do it because we choose not to do it.

I think there is an element of truth here but i think its actually more likely to be down to CW/AK wanting to work with people they trust even if it does seem a bit " low rent ". I was in a taxi in dublin half way throught the January transfer window and it turns out the taxi driver was also a scout for us. I know i know sounds incredulous but he actually showed me a text conversation with Alan Knill. Now how would a taxi driver picking up fairs in central dublin be so lucky to have the ( probably ) only blade out on the piss in Dublin that night in his cab. The upshot of the conversation was - no money to spend really but his advise was look in the eastern block and Turkey. Its the only place left with good value for up and coming young talent with a pretty much guarenteed resale value. I cant remember the names he said but there was a Polish CB and a Turkish AM that he was particularly keen on.

Obviously nothing came of them but i couldnt work out whether this was typical SUFC doing stuff on the cheap or if we had a great scout that no one else knew about hence why he was having to do a bit of taxiing to pay the bills. I came to the conclusion it was the former. I will however claim advance knowledge if we do actually sign a polish CB under 40 or a Turkish replacement for Duffy

66 divided by 5 is 13.2. ;);)

3 or 4 players before the Portugal trip?

Eh?

This CANNOT BE CORRECT. I know this, because a range of self-appointed, errr, “supporters” have consistently told me on this very forum that Wilder will be given bugger all money to spend unless, or until, Bog Roll and Biggest Blade have knocked each other out, or sold the club to Chansiri, or contracted syphillis, or decamped to S6, or, or, or, or, or, or ...... errrrr, fucking something else that proves how useless our club is.

Let me repeat, NO SIGNINGS WHATEVER. Or maybe 20m’s worth. Which won’t be enough. All of which will be deferred until AT LEAST January 2020 at the earliest. Errr, I don’t care what Wilder says. He’s clearly lying anyway.

We’re down already, the club is shite, good posts fellow Blades.

Can't wait for the season to start tbh. How inept and useless we will be is anyone's guess. I also have us down by xmas and to concede double figures in at least 2 matches during the season. UTUB  :shark::shark:

Realistically we need a minimum of 8. To give us enough cover - we have nothing coming through the academy who are close to first team level yet.

So -

1 x keeper
1 x centre back
1 x left back (cover)
1 x defensive midfielder
1 x midfielder
1 x attacking midfielder
2 x strikers / wide forwards

Potentially a right back if we are looking to upgrade.... given it’s taken two months and we’ve not even signed hendo yet >> This is all starting to look difficult in 6 weeks. We can’t rely on no injuries next year or we risk shootings ourselves in the foot.

We need the 3/4 before Portugal or we are going to need a day like stoke had when 5 signings were announced.

I’m gonna be seriously concerned if the 1/2 this week don’t materialise. We can talk as much as we like about not many premier league sides having made many signings - but there are not many sides needing 7/8 new players to compete!

There's a saying about buses. You wait ages for one then three turn up at once.

We need players in but the priority is they improve the squad, quality not quantity. Not only slow on incoming players there seems very little interest in our seven on the transfer list either. Good luck Wilder.

Yes, maggie alledgedly wanted to after HMS Sheffield (10th May 1982) then SS Atlantic Conveyor (May 25th 1982) were hit and sunk, she wanted to take out the airfield that the Super Etandards took off from with a so called tactical nuke...thankfully the top brass basically told her to eff off, no way they were going to launch a first nuke strike, whatever the outcome of the ground war was going to be...

The ideal scenario is that the football club has outgrown the 7 players on the transfer list and we don’t at any point have to rely on them next year. This is gonna need 7/8 signings to make that happen....

I agree with quality over quantity but we’d be foolish (imo) to overlook the drop off inequality outside of the first 11. A few Injuries and we would be massively exposed

We don’t even have the more able deputies from last year in cranie / coutts.

Most if not all listed players will get clubs .As money is tight in the EFL clubs will not move early on finalising deals so not picking up the wage tab in summer.

Oh...

Tomorrow’s a BIG day transfer wise, if nowt happens by then I will blow a feckin fuse. Getting paranoid, tetchy, cats in ITU. Will not be happy after all this stress after a great season we end up with our headline signing being Dowell, Sinclair, McNare et al.
Someone give me words of comfort......

Mr Jelly, chill dude! I bring the balm of reason. Contracts end with the month of June, new contracts begin with July. There are almost certainly deals agreed, but most cannot formally sign for us until July. Stay cool, or your eyebrows will melt down to your cheeks.

Free transfers ?

Free transfers ?

It depends. Contract terminated, sign when they want. Released by the club, they will generally be contracted to the end of June. Released is a bit of a misnomer, generally it is 'contract not renewed'.

Any player intentionally running down their contract is free to sign pre-contract agreements within the last 6 months. Ramsey at Arsenal is a case in point.

The way wilder and McCabe are talking they are happy to stay has little old Sheffield United , we can't expect to compete with bournemoth and burnley until we've been up and down for a few seasons. We never have and never will be a ambitious club under this regime.

“Wilder has no ambition”

“Unfortunately Chris wilders outburst at the end of the season was all about his salary and nowt to do with budgets, now he's got his contract he will tow the clubs line like all previous managers have do”

“The only worry I have is that if the board don't back the team cw will move to a club that will grow with him , he his very ambitious and won't hang around too long utb.”

Contrarian?
