"It's a really exciting time, isn't it? Lots of action, anticipation. Great for everyone to be involved in.

We made a lot of enquiries, all were quality players that we thought would improve the squad. Unfortunately, sometimes they don't come off. Sometimes you're waiting for one club to get a player in so they can afford to let one go, and that team will be looking at a number of bids. Still, we've got faith in our players, we're right up there chasing the back, and we'll look towards the loan window to get some cover in key positions.

How about a smugly phrased shit motivational cliche?"

- Nigel Adkins, 2nd Jan '16

Do you mean Feb?

Suspect Higdon will have been on between 5k - 10k per week. Probably cost us £100k to pay him off.

Here's a question I'd be grateful if anyone can answer - having trouble finding a definitive answer - do the costs associated with a cancelled contract i.e. paying a player off contribute to SCMP? i.e. Do we clear out some wage space by paying all/some of his wages at once?

The shear amount of players that we all seem to be glad to see the back of really is a sad indictment of the transfer business that has been completed over the last few years.
I really can't imagine that any other club would be in such a dire situation that us fans (me included) are watching the clock tick down on transfer deadline day celebrating all of the players that are being off loaded.

This really is a new low for the club.

I disagree about it been a new low. I think if anything, its a fresh start, getting rid of all the wank that we have been lumbered with.

...or the start of a new high ;)

This is exactly what I wanted to happen. I hope more follow. The only downside is that some of the players that I really want out are first-teamers who haven't exactly placed themselves in the shop window for anyone else due to their shite displays all season.

The real sad indictment for the club in my eyes is that for the first time ever, I'm seeing players leaving the club as a very positive thing. That's how bad it's got.

I'm bumping this because I'd like the answer too.

I can see what you mean but until we have signed some decent replacements for the dross that we are shipping out then quality wise we are going to be no further forward. Getting rid of the shite first though is obviously a necessity.

Problem is we ain't seen the back of them (apart from Higdon) we've only moved the problem on to the summer by loaning them out. If there's no incoming all we've achieved is reducing the wage bill

MK Dons have been linked with Leicester City defender Liam Moore. Been impressed with what I have seen of him in the past, we get on well and have done business with them recently (Hammond) and we need a central defender. Surely if MK Dons are after him, we could challenge there? I'd take him in the centre of our defence.

As lovely as it is to think we could challenge MK for his signature, that they're a tier above us and even though struggling, more likely to play at that level next season, means we're a far less attractive proposition.

I think Burn will in all likelihood sign.

MK Dons need about 15 new defenders, all on the pitch at the same time if yesterday is anything to go by.

That was the point that I was trying to make.

I just hope that Adkins has a few central defensive shaped cards hidden up his sleeve for later today.

Adkins is always commenting on how the squad is too large and I don't think it's just the wage bill that bothers him. I expect that he just wants a smaller group to manage and share his management team's time with. I remember when Mourinho joined Chelsea first time around and said he just wanted 22 players, 2 for each position. I know we play more in league 1 but there must be non financial benefits in having a smaller squad as well as the obvious fi ancial benefits. Thoughts on a post card please....

Sorry, I mis-read your post there! I've done that a couple of times today.

It's all this deadline day excitement :)

"Mutual Consent." That means we have come to an agreement to let him leave for free. We have managed to get Higdon and Dimaio off the books without paying them off. Thus freeing up wages for potential new signings.

Dimaio for example will probably have been one where Chesterfield and the Blades were unable to reach an agreement over the fee involved. We would also be due compensation due to his age if they signed him up for free transfer at the end of his contract. Therefore we agreed to terminate his contract without paying him of which meant Chesterfield could sign him as he was unassigned to a club. Meaning...
  1. We didn't pay him off
  2. We got him off the wage bill
  3. Chesterfield got their man for free without having to pay compo
Basically, securing the release of these two by 'mutual consent' suggests signings are coming in.
