2nd now. That's it. honeymoon over. start of the drift down the table. i knew mccabe couldnt even keep us top for more than a day. get the division four tickets booked. :tumbleweed:

What gives you such unmitigated optimism?
If Cresswell is our Plan B it's a good job this Pub League has deteriorated to such depths !
I cannot see that we will improve except if Wilson gets his head out of his arse and stops picking same owd same owd just because we have not lost - Miller must wonder what he has to do!

Who said Cresswell was Plan B ?....why did there have to be a Plan B when we were doing OK? Picking 'same owd same owd' has led us to being in 2nd place.

Remind me how well Miller played on Satdi !

Quite a few were predicting a defeat last night.....it would appear some on here are disappointed we didn't and must be begging for us to lose soon to justify what they are saying

Why should we lose at Swindon? -they lost to Macclesfield on Saturday!
Miller was playing out of position most of Saturday - how have Westlake, Cofie Williams and anyone else who's been asked to play right midfield when their normal position is elsewhere
If you're happy to grind out a draw at Swindon who were missing four regular first teamers, happy to bring on a broken down knackered ex championship striker (at best) then that is as low as we have sunk!
What happens if Blackman picked up an injury, MacDonald got another groin strain - by picking the same 11 week in week out leaves us very vulnerable - look at last season without Evans or even earlier this year when Doyle and Flynn were suspended for three games!

Maybe Wilson doesn't want to change a winning/not losing team. He'll make the changes when he has to, as a result of injuries or suspensions - or a defeat or two.

We should not have a settled team?

We should not select our best players so that we can see how we go if they get injured or suspended?

19 goals in 16 games. its like watching paint dry. how we have 32 points is beyond me..

Forest and leeds both won titles with very low scoring ratios, one with 58 goals in 42 games,
leeds won 17 games 1-0 in one season
and we were the highest scorers in all 4 divisions lase season , for what good it did us
I dont mind watching paint dry so long as we get a good finish

Who?

You keep saying it but don't name names. Who, on here, wanted us to lose? Most of the complaints are (once again) from people who spent their time and money traipsing around the country and seem to think it was a tedious match. Was it not? Where are those who went and thought it was a banger?

I didn't go (and therefore have made no comment on it) but if you can't tell the difference between people not being happy with watching what they are watching, and wanting us to lose then I fear for your grasp on reality.

I'll repeat again (for about the tenth thread), just because we "got a result", doesn't mean we can't improve. Just because some of us want to improve doesn't mean we are desperate to go on a losing run.
I'll be delighted if we get promoted (as I have been on every previous occasion I've seen it happen). Will it go down as the greatest season we've ever had? Not playing the way we are currently it won't.

Charlton's goal difference last term was plus 46. I really do not see any real comparison Norfolk.

Totallya gree re promotion being the only possible conclusion to this season but I aint convinced at all that scoring 1 goal a game is the way to do it.

I'd be interested in knowing how many games they won by the odd goal to be honest.

At this stage, we're achieving 2 points per game and are very tight defensively, George Long has been an absolute revelation in the sticks to date and I think the only thing the side lacks is a bit of genuine raw pace.

I'm confident the goals will come eventually and that we will click, but the important thing is that until that click happens, we keep avoiding defeat. Saturday is going to be our biggest test so far this season, so if we can come out of that with a point I'll be delighted.

If we score 1 goal a game but don't concede, then that's good enough for me, we can't expect miracles from an average squad in an average division.

To offer some perspective Charlton scored 1 goal or less in 21 league games last season by my count (8 wins, 9 draws & 4 defeats). They conceded 14 goals in those games.

We've already scored 1 goal or less in 14 league games (6 wins & 8 draws). We've conceded 6 goals in those games.

Thank you squire.

So that's almost half a season for them, and let's be honest they pretty much bossed the top 2 of the league for a large majority of the season.

Interestingly, of those 21 games they accumulated 33 points, we've already taken 26 from the 14 games mentioned so I'd say we have laid a fairly solid foundation for our season, let's just hope the builders do a good job of the brickwork!

Are you are seriously saying there aren't some on here waiting for us to lose so they can say 'I told you so'? I can think of 4 posters straight away and I am sure you can. Wait for the first defeat and they will be all over this board as they generally do having a o at DW and the club in general.

No one on here has said we can't improve, but it is the result that matters this season rather than style. If we go up playing like this I don't care.

Being in a promotion place having scored so few goals is pretty unusual, and I would guess not sustainable. I think the number of penalties we've had is a bit higher than the norm, as well

We'll either kick on and score more, as norfolkblade suggests (probably if we get a decent wide player or two in at some point) or we'll start to lose a few of these games that are currently ending up 0-0 and 1-0. Way below that on the list of probabilities is a season where we only score about 50 and let in 30 and go up.

How many of the high number of penalties we have had should not have been given?

I cant think of any/many

Indeed. Whilst it suggests that we're far less prolific than they were, it would suggest that we are more defensively sound and can grind out a 1-0 win more often. Two very different teams but given the greater quality of the division last season I would say we dont need to score as many as Charlton to go up (probably nowhere near). Interestingly, it appears Charlton's first 1-0 win was in November. We're in November and have already achieved that feat 6 times. Appears they learned how to grind out narrow results in the back half of the season. Perhaps we will go the other way and start winning by bigger margins at the back end? Wishful thinking maybe!

Yes Barty, I AM seriously saying that. I am seriously saying that, no matter what they post on here, or say in the pub pre and post match, when it comes down to the 90 minutes (coz we know nothing else counts!) then everyone on here would like to see us win more than see us not.
I can appreciate that there are several who would accept the second prize of an "I told you so" but that would be secondary to the dissappointment of seeing us lose.

I am more than happy to say that I hated Monty's presence in our team but on the rare occasions that he scored did it stop me from celebrating a Blades goal? Of course it didn't. Did it stop me giving him a standing round of applause when he chased 80 yards to block a goal bound effort in the POF against Burnley? Course not. Did any of the good games he had (should that be either rather than any?) mean that I wouldn't berate him the next time he had a "stinker". You guessed it.

It's all about opinions and debate on here (and more than a little piss taking if you can get away with it) but in the final analysis we all want the same thing, a successful United. We just have different ways of showing it and I, for one, don't think the rose tinted specs are any more beneficial than the shitty brown tints that some may wear.

If you read the last paragraph of my original post and the last one of yours, aren't they two sides of the same coin?

in 73 74 , just as an example , theres loads more
liverpool finished runners up to leeds

leeds scored only 66 goals but liverpool only scored 52 goals in 42 games
Id settle for second , prefer first

we will score more we are just point collecting at the moment
