Tony Currie - what’s the crack?

There‘s definitely a quality debate in this topic, fellow Blades. Further refinements to the question might include:

How much of a knob would you have to be, in order that being a good player for us could be ignored?

How well would you have to have played for your big knobness to be forgiven?

Also, where does Neil Shipperley’s knob figure in this?

Okay I will take this; no it emphatically doesn't excuse poor behaviour, but not everyone walks this earth with a heart & head full of the joys it brings. Some have demons that are difficult to control, or have quick tempers or trigger points that let them down at times, & lets face it who, having reached a certain age, doesn't secretly enjoy being a grumpy old man, I know I do.
None of that excuses poor behaviour, but we are what we are. I have met TC on three occasions I am proud to say, & he was perfectly fine on all of them. He will never be the life & soul of the party, he is quite a shy individual privately, which is probably why he was such an entertainer on the pitch. He is responsible for my highest moments of joy watching United & that will never be diminished because he can be a bit of a git at times. Sheffield United & Tony Currie belong together, & I hope he can be part of my club as long as he is able.

Exactly. The problem many footballers have is that everyone wants them to be their best mate when they meet them. They're asked the same questions time after time yet are expect to be full of the joys of spring. Then there are those who won't leave them alone, shagging their leg until the proverbial bucket of cold water is thrown over them and their hero immediately becomes a knob.

As you say, TC is quite shy, as anyone who has met him should know.

Tony Currie the best player I have seen play for The Blades.however in August 1971 a couple of days after beating Leeds 3-0.
My Dad took me to Bramall Lane.when the player's entrance was on John street.to get autographs from the players.
Tony Currie refused to sign. my Dad, he is no longer with us Bless Him.told Currie that we are emigrating to Sydney Australia.
He then signed and wished us all the Best. Alan Woodward was not to keen either but signed after Currie did.got all the player's autographs that day.
Just my Bleeding luck we left for Australia when we were playing fantastic football..returned to England early Feb 1977 when we were on a downward slide to division 4.

I have met TC many times since I was 8 and he was always fine with me. Came to my house once with John Hope as a surprise arranged by my dad. Yes, he has a shy nature towards people he doesn't know well.

I went to Kingy's funeral last April. My friends and I were in a waiting area and to our surprise TC and his wife walked in. TC was talking about Kingy but a lady who was with us got talking to TC telling him that he is a big hero of hers etc etc. I could see that TC looked embarrassed. I told her that we were supposed to pay respects to Kingy rather than telling TC how much he was of a hero to us but she wouldn't take notice and carried on talking to TC and his wife. Her husband and my other friend were embarrassed so we tried to distract her by talking about where we should be sitting during the service but she was more interested to be sitting in the same row as TC!

Not easy for TC when he is being attracted by those who wanted to talk to him about his playing days etc and people should respect his privacy.

My perspective, l think like many others, is after he retired and came back to the Lane, and him at my children’s school. For such a wonderful player, he’s not a flamboyant personality.

As a kid though, Alan Woodward was miserable on every occasion l saw him/ ask d for an autograph. Not in a Freddie Truman “fuck off” way but a face as long as Norfolk Street.

I take it you never saw TC play because if you had you wouldn't write drivel like that as is said he owes us nothing, get some videos and watch him he was magic. Akinbyi true TC not a flamboyant person he left that on the field, he's a top bloke and a joy to have in your home for 90 minutes, IMS he also came to my school in 70's I remember standing on bank singing Tony, Tony Currie with the others there.

They are just people different personalities just cause they are footballers doesn't make em any different to you and me I have always worshipped from afar never drooled over or asked for autographs and they are still my heroes including TC who is top of the tree

Owing us nothing and being a great player shouldn't exclude him from criticism if warranted.

TC has been at the club for most if not all of Mccabes tenure at the club so strong relationships will be there.
I think most employees were surprised at the verdict and TC ( not a paid employee these days I think ) reacted to McCabe losing the case. He would have been voted off anyway as the prince wanted hi own people on board.
He probably had split loyalties ,once the dust settled he would have looked at it differently and the prince must have wanted him to stay.
He's a blades icon so it's good to have him around.

As you say, TC is quite shy, as anyone who has met him should know.

This is true, but they don’t all accept ambassador roles with the club. If you do that, and are paid for it (assuming he is), you have to accept accept being bothered by fans more than a normal retired player would be.

That said, people should remember that footballers are people too and everyone has bad days.

I was at a boarding school in Berkshire for 6 years and from my observation, most Southerners (especially Londoners) are more reserved types than Northerners. TC was born and brought up in London so some Sheffielders probably find his ways more difficult to accept. Kevin Gage is a Londoner, lives in Dronfield and gets on well with Dronfielders, quite often he and I walk past each other but as he doesn't know me , he doesn't tend to make eye contact so I put that down to him being a Londoner. You know in Yorkshire , you are more likely to chat with people you don't really know on the bus and it is not really the same in London.
