My first away game too, around 1973 I think - we won 2-1

October 1973 Stoke 1 (Colquhoun og) Blades 2 (Woodward, Scullion). It wasnt funny at the time but looking back I chuckle when I think of Colquhoun's comical own goal. A cross from the right had hit McAlister's leg but it rebounded off Colquhoun's head (he was running back towards the goal and couldnt get out of the way) and it cannoned towards the net. We equalised with a Woody free kick that pierced through the defensive wall giving the keeper no chance. The winner was a piledriver from the right by Scullion (he went back to Watford a few weeks later)

Was very cold that day. Not as cold as the 2-0 defeat away to Derby though. That's the worst I've experienced.

Stoke City was the first away game I ever went to; it was during the 1952-53 promotion season. My dad took me, hoping to see the great Stanley Matthews. Unfortunately, Stan wasn't playing that day.
It wasn't the first time that football had crushed my hopes, and it certainly wasn't the last.

Mathews wasn't playing because he played for Blackpool 1952-53.

Please recheck your info, Mathews joined Blackpool around 1947-48, going back to Stoke 1960'ish. Remember the "Mathews Final", where he got his cup medal? 1953 that was, Blackpool beat Bolton 4-3.

No he didn't. He joined Blackpool for the 1954/55 season.

Joined Blackpool in May 1947 despite that Stoke hadnt completed their fixtures for the 1946-47 season and still having a good chance of winning the league. Stoke lost 2-1 at Bramall Lane on 14th June so that won Liverpool the title! It is strange that Stoke sold their star player when they were needing a few more points to win the title

Was reading the match report from when we lost 2-0 at Huish Park. Didn’t realize it but Luke Ayling played in that game, so doubly nice to stuff him at Leeds this time around.

S'ok I fully understand, the old grey cells here are on the wane also. Basic facts I've known for donkeys seem to hide in the mists of time then suddenly reappear when I'm talking or thinking of a completely different subject. In't life wonderful, at least for us Blades must be crap to be old supporting the other faction.
