O connell won't get picked for the same reason coast won't
Because he plays In a back 3

England should have played a back 3 when our midfield was gash - we're starting to look better in that area now with maddison, rice, mount, winks, foden coming through. Still worth looking into though

O'Connell will get called up, but when there's about 10 players above him in the pecking order (and southgate was there for the liverpool game where he was MOTM), he's no chance.

Chelsea and Lampard are fashionable for some reason. Hell, Paul Merson thinks they could dominate English football.

It’s an odd one because JOC was captain of the u19s when Southgate took over the u21s. He seems to favour former England youth players.

As an aside, one of my favourite Ray Parlour stories is when he was at Boro and Southgate became manager. His nickname was ‘gate’ apparently and at the first team meeting he told his former playing colleagues ‘look, I’m manager now so you can’t call me Gate anymore’.
Parlour said ‘OK, how about “Big Nose”?’

They do have a ‘class of 92’ look about them. Mount, Hudson Odoi, Abrahams etc.

From what I saw of him at Derby last season, he never stood out. But obviously now he’s playing for Chelsea, so he’s bound to get a call-up. Got to be a better option than Michael Keane mind - he’s been poor for club and country so far this season.

I always think he and others don't get picked because they'll be legging it up and down the wings and all over the place and no one will have any idea why,

With a name like O'Connell I'm supprised the Irish aren't checking into if he has ever owned a wolfhound

I’m sure I read/heard McCarthy and the Irish FA had looked it but he didn’t qualify.

Not sure any of them will reach the levels that Giggs, Scholes, Beckham or G Neville did, but absolutely agree that there is the possibility that Chelsea could finally utilise their academy, and create a homegrown spine with the players you mention. Big fan of Reece James too.

Will just need a bit of patience, which I'm not sure Chelsea really have, unfortunately for them, and possibly England.

Can you remember Giggs etc coming through though? I can. They were good but they were a long way from what they became. Giggs couldn’t cross. Lee Sharpe looked a better prospect.

The famous Hansen quote referred to above followed a defeat where they looked out of their depth. It wasn’t just their ability that made them, it was their mentality. And that’s what I don’t know regarding the Chelsea players, whether they’ve got that same winning attitude and self motivation.

And I hate typing this because I can’t stand Chelsea.

We don't have many stand out individuals at United, they are all squad players who work for each other, Southgate and England want the flashy players unfortunately, the stand out ones that carry the teams, O'Connel, Henderson, Ludstram ect who have been great for us probably just doesn't stand out enough.
Ireland and Scotland understand they don't have as many players that play in the top divisions, so it makes sense for them to call up Stevens, Egan, Fleck ect.

Squad is confirmed.

Heaton & Mings (Villa) goals conceded: 11

Henderson & O'Connell (Sheffield United) goals conceded: 7

Obvious choice which 2 to call up then...

Also found this article interesting:

Keane: "Hang about, where is Jack?" Maguire points "There he is running towards their penalty box!"
To be fair, Maguire is more than capable of an “overlap” as well - loves to wander forward

Enda Stevens stands out every time I watch us play...different gravy this past year

Tomori is awful. Fuck off Gareth.

Playing in a back three is much easier than a conventional centre back partnership, add to that the 2nd goal against Chelsea and the mess he made of the Southampton goal, it’s no surprise his 7 games in the prem haven’t been enough to see him picked.

He’s had a solid start overall, but I’m a lot less worried about us losing JOC to Liverpool than I was in the summer. Hope he does better as the season goes on, should be looking to match the levels of Stevens and Egan.
