He'd be a brilliant Peck replacement currently.
I hear RS likes his defensive midfielder to be more of a progress passer, tempo dictator and maestro than a destroyer like Vini... so could have possibly been a Souza replacement as well.
If we keep both though (I don't think we will) I don't really see where he fits in.

So is he coming back or is he going to the Brummies?

With Vini off a player who doesn’t suit selles style, Doyle should be targeted as the deep lying playmaker we don’t have. 11th hour….. Rocket Man, you still know ought

Nixon saying we are hoping to bring him back

Is Doyle a high press midfielder? I’m not so sure? I suppose it depends on your definition of “high press” or at least Selles’s definition?

He’d be coming in to replace Souza as the deep lying playmaker Selles has previously favoured in that role. When he replaced Norwood here towards the end the end of his loan spell he showed he can do that job at this level good vision and passing range, energetic or certainly more energetic than Norwood was capable of at that stage in his career and a very willing tackler even if it wasn’t his specialty. I think in a midfield with Blaster/Peck and Hamer/O’hare in front of him he’d look good.

Midfield depth would then be:

CDM - Doyle/Blaster/Shackleton

LCM - Hamer/O’Hare/Davies

RCM - Blaster/Peck/Davies

If we sort out the back 4 and bring in some creative wide players that midfield is good enough to challenge for the top in this division.

I think some teams will look to target our lack of height/physical presence if we decide to ignore it completely as we bring in additions.

I wonder if that could be mitigated by having two aerially dominant CB’s or if we would need a bigger player in midfield. If we were to lose another midfielder Sidibe at Stoke could be one to look at depending on his price as it seems he might be available this summer.

Cash-in on Hamer and getting those wide players in depth won't be a problem.

I don’t know where I stand on Hamer he’s the most gifted player in the squad, creative and drives with the ball but can he get fit enough to go box to box for 90 minutes.

I’d be reluctant to lose him because I don’t think there’s another midfielder in the squad that can do what he does and it would significantly weaken the team but if the manager ends up deciding he doesn’t fit then the resources tied up in him could be better used elsewhere. It’s a really difficult decision and one I’m glad I don’t have to make.

I think it was written in the media somewhere that Selles plans to use Hamer in a different role than out on the left.
Could he be looking to bring him more central as a more floating attacker (Duffy type role)?
Plenty were bemoaning him being sort of shoehorned into the left of midfield after being played centrally in previous seasons.
Could be an option, then looking at someone like Doyle as a deeper lying midfielder with the other "attacking" positions effecting the high press would be good.

You'd probably get 60-70 mins of him running his lard arse off all game for about just over half a season with injuries and suspensions but you're right we aren't going to buy the same quality realistically.

Need to see some intent from owners, might settle some nerves

I think we will do business like we did last summer. Use what we generate. Might see some movement once Souza has gone, but generally just need some defenders and 5 good loans.

Souza nighr generate money for say Phillips and Alzate

I reckon sacking a manager who was loved by the majority of the fanbase, after he was 15 minutes away from getting us promoted, shows that they have real intent mate. Yes we need a few bodies through the door too, but it is still early days and Selles will have wanted a bit of time to weigh up the squad and present some targets to the owners. I expect them to back him.
