Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle is not big, strong, athletic or good enough for Wolves, but we should sign him? Eh?? Why??? 🤷‍♂️
IF we go up we need to sign a shed load of big, strong, athletic, PL players to stand even a remote chance of staying up.
IF we don’t go up we still need to be signing big, strong, athletic players so that we stand a much better chance of promotion next season and so that the transition from Champ to PL is a teeny, tiny bit easier.

TD would be decent midfield backup for the Prem and a starter for the Championship. He is only 23 so there is definitely room for improvement.

The manager of wolves has been quoted as saying that TD style of play does not suit his tactics. It is nothing to do with not being good enough it is about whether he fits into a specific style of play.
I do however agree that we need stronger, taller quicker more athletic footballers, not only do we seem to be signing more of this “type” but our academy seems to be producing them

I think it shows just how much work would need to be done if we got promoted. I agree with your analysis on Doyle but if we brought him in now, he'd immediately become one of our best players. Peck and Blaster arguably have more potential though
Blaster and Doyle can't play together but Doyle not good enough for the Premier League anyway and they'll want £10 million for him. He might end up at Fulham or Palace at a push. Or Leeds.

Whaaat?

Isn't he like 40-odd?

"Will Hughes challenger" then

Will Hughes is still really decent, to be fair. Had a really good career.
Random fact, his Mrs is from Retford.

On topic, I agree with the Wolves manager's comments.
I wasn't bothered about signing Tommy Doyle because I honestly didn't see much in him that surpassed Sydie Peck (passing range, aside).

Tall and athletic players are ideal but they're ideal for all the better clubs too and usually expensive

Maybe a smart approach would be to focus on small and athletic? Above average pace, not weak, good stamina and can tackle a bit. Must be some like that within reach

Play 4-4-2, 3-4-1-2 or 4-3-3, he'd slot right into any of those midfields.

4-4-2
------Arblaster/Doyle-Peck
RW-----------------------------------LW

3-4-1-2 (same with 4-3-3)
Arblaster/Doyle-Peck
------------O'Hare

Bit risky playing without a CDM in front of a back 4 (especially when sitting deep), but we know Doyle can drop a little deeper and ping passes left and right, use any 2 of Doyle/Arblaster/Peck as box to box midfielders getting into the box for goals.

Aye
But, ‘devil in the detail’:-

“Pereira has highlighted Doyle’s shortcomings as the reason for his lack of action.
He said: “We are not a team to have 80 per cent of possession, so he has problems. If we are a team that has the ball every time, doesn’t allow counter-attacks and keeps the ball to dominate the opponent, this is the team for him. But we need to understand that we face top teams, top players. We need to run a lot and he’s missing this physicality, especially when we play with two midfielders.
With three midfielders, I believe he is a 10 with high quality. The last pass, shots, crosses – he has those skills.”

Whats more critical us having defenders that can read the positioning and counter the breaks of the opposition speed merchants to nullify their threats. Souttar Anel and Holding as a three would snuff out the breaks that most teams pose.

And provide good cover for the wing backs, if we go back down the road of a 3. I hope we don’t, though.

Let's sign him anyway

Assuming you saw the TeamTalk post today saying we're back in for him?

Not that I'd be against it, but is our AI prompt "Find all players who once played for Sheffield United..."

Would imagine he'd be a potential replacement only if/when Souza or Peck are sold

No, not seen anything but I just get the impression he may be a possibility despite no promotion

I'd be happy for us to take a quality over quantity approach on loans and pay high wages for 2 or 3 players similar to Doyle

If Wilder or the club more broadly has identified our inability to dominate possession as a weakness within the squad and it definitely was last year then Doyle is a proven commodity who we know can come in and run games at this level. For a reasonable fee that would be a smart investment in my book.

Many times since January we really needed a player to put their foot on the ball for 10 minutes and take the sting out of an opponent or help us retain the ball so we could build sustained attacks. Doyle would be that player and bring something to the midfield group that we don’t otherwise have.

The ideal successor to Norwood that we never did sign permanently, something to do with a relegation wage clause?

Doubt Wolves will command a big fee for him (they've just got £60m for Cunha so they're not short of funds, plus Kilman last summer) so we should be able to afford him.

If Souza leaves, Doyle would be a good replacement, even if he isn't a like for like replacement.

Said in an earlier post that it could be risky playing without a CDM to shield the back line (case in point, see what we were like without Souza this season) but Doyle did always put good tackles in when needed.

Depends on the cost of the deal for me. If the rumoured £3-4m is true and he's willing to drop down then I think it's worth looking seriously at. If it's over £5m I don't think it is, but if one of Souza, Arblaster or Peck is sold then it becomes a very tempting and presumably easy deal to make.
I also think the "he can't play at PL level" stuff is nonsense, it's just not worked out for him at Wolves.

Would have TD in a heartbeat. No nonsense. Good tackler
Not a bad shot either. Remember Blackburn quarter final.
Id sign him (if available at a decent price) and keep souza if we can - and push Doyle further forward to compete with ohare.

I think he'd get double figure goals in that role for us, not afraid to shoot, and would link play nicely.

Blaster souza
-------Doyle

With T.Davis, Peck & Ohare fighting it out for the other spots - would leave us very strong in midfield with depth we've never seen before.

= Zero creativity and pace
