Been laid up with flu this week so between nap times and lemsips I’ve spent quite a bit of time reading various forums.

I’ve found some of the views absolutely bizarre. As a player I’m still not 100% convinced he’s worth the fee but fully behind him now it looks like he’s joining us.

Stoke -
They cannot comprehend that we probably had a deal agreed for him in the summer but ran out of money and had to pull it. He definitely chose them over us. He’s now totally fallen in love with the place and simply cannot see a scenario where he would rather play for United over Stoke. We’re shite apparently. He’s probably getting forced out by a greedy Leicester which won’t sit well with TC and he’ll regret not finishing his loan there and signing permanently in the summer. Playing in the premier league doesn’t count if it’s for the blades cos we’re shite remember.

Sunderland -
Genuinely believe they’re playing a brand of football never seen in the second tier before. Enzo Le Fee is the equivalent of signing prime Iniesta from Barcelona and United are only signing BBD and Cannon because we’re shitting ourselves at just how spectacular they are. They were never really interested in Cannon and it was just a tactic to get us to spunk our load on him while they mop up the real talent when we’re spent up. There’s no other explanation for it. No way on this planet would a player ever choose to play for us over them, never mind two in a week.

I don’t know if our kidney punching reputation has now caught up with us but both Stoke and Sunderland fans say they can’t stand us. We’re shit. Shit fans, shit city… just shit shit shit. Oh yeah and Wilders a horrible wanker as well you know.

And parachute payments. The only reason we’re towards the top of the table is parachute payments. Forgetting that both of those clubs have had parachute payments in the not too distant past and squandered them. Sunderland managed to get themselves relegated while in receipt of parachute payments. Stoke spent a combined £20’m on vokes and afobe.
We had to get promoted from league 1 to get them, actually on a shoe string but that’s forgotten about now.

Excellent post, thanks ben1987

I’d just like to add that Sunlan believe they’re the only club on the planet who bring players through their youth system/academy and give them a chance in the first team. This ‘fact’ gives them a moral superiority over everyone else, allegedly. 🤷‍♂️😂

I noticed that too.

Don’t get me wrong. Sunderland do play some nice attacking football and probably build up with more pace than us. Impressive for the youngest side in the division. But we’re the 4th youngest side in the division and have been absolutely ravaged by injuries all season.

What strikes me is that fans of every other club who’ve been out of the top flight for a long period seem to think they’ll just go up and stay up with no issues at all. They think we’re the outlier and last seasons embarrassment was all down to us. Totally ignoring the fact that pretty much every newly promoted team struggles with the majority coming straight back down. Forest and Villa both stayed up by the skin of their teeth in their first seasons back up.

Southampton really don't seem to be getting the stick we got despite being 4 points worse off than us at the same stage. I can't see where a win is coming from for them whatsoever.

They're from down south that's why. So they don't have to suffer the inbuilt snobbishness and prejudice of the London based media

Yes , I thought the same when I saw those figures and have no idea where they came from .

As just one example , just a brief bit of research shows that in his last 89 games for four different clubs Cameron Archer has scored 24 goals and I am almost certain that none of the others will have scored more goals than games played.

Very strange .
Yeah the stats in that post look duff. But Cannons championship goal scoring record is very good. 17 goals in 42 games.

100% we need these 2 lads in whether were stacked or not cant beat competition for places if we could have brought bbd and tc in last august we would be 10 points clear at the top

Teams tend to hate us as we've been relatively successful at this level for some time now. The two tend to go hand in hand.

It is this. We must piss fans off because we are always one of the best sides in a league and now we're spending a bit on top of it. I'd dislike us if I was a Stoke fan because they've never managed to be a force in this league since coming down despite having money. We just show what they should have done when they came down.

Agree with this and Wilder recently talked about the importance of a strong bench giving him the chance to bring a fresh pair of forwards on in the second half. This is something that worked very well in his previous promotion team and we should have a number of combinations to consider for different scenarios now.

People forget that plenty have come down from the Premier League with parachute payments and failed, and funnily enough, Stoke and Sunderland are two prime examples of this.

Stoke spent a ridiculous amount when they came down compared to the rest of the division, and Sunderland went straight through to League 1 which is what some pundits and fans of other clubs thought would happen to us.

The ignorant view of "well parachute payments" is really really stupid and flawed, and the fact we made a huge profit in the summer transfer window also gets forgotten about

Stoke also have one of the richest owners in the country, they are wealthier than a lot of the Premier League owners

If they were losing 5 and 6 nil most weeks then of course they’d be getting stick.
Every time I’ve seen Southampton they look half decent, better than what we showed last season.
Only last week they looked the better side for long spells away at Man United.

So I think the theory is Southampton will start amassing some points sooner or later,

If they are still below 10 points late in the season….then the national media jokes and disrespect will be rightly aimed at them.
Also agree with an earlier post that there’s a slight pro southern bias and a slight anti bias towards northern teams, especially from Sheffield.

Not many people know this but we do have a pretty incredible record at 2nd tier level.

We’ve now spent 47 seasons in the 2nd tier and roughly 66% of the time, we’re involved in an upper half/ promotion battle.
Sheff United being a promotion contender is “normal”, through out history. Hence why our expectations are rightly always high in the Championship.

It’s when we reach the top flight we have problems, we’ve had 63 seasons in the top flight, so that is our natural place
However we’re usually a bottom half team, hence our expectations are always modest.

Agree….but that’s part of their frustration
Their owner is a billionaire Stoke fan living in Stoke and would love to splash the cash but FFP rules stop him from doing it.

Stoke fans would love FFP to be scrapped because they know they are so financially powerful (hence the slight arrogance) but it’s making no difference
Just look at their record since relegation from the Premier league, 6 seasons and they’ve finished 16th, 15th, 14th, 14th, 16th and 17th.
How boring has their last 6 seasons been? Just drifting along in the bottom half.

With Tom Cannons transfer fee reputedly being £10 million plus add-ons up to £13 million and some of us raising an eye brow at this I thought I would have a little look at comparable players and their records.

These stats relate to all football played professionally since they were in the U18's

Tom Cannon, Age 22, games played 55, goals scored 73, 1.33 goals per game, Transfer Fee £10-13m
Jay Stansfield, Age 22, games played 56, goals scored 76, 1.36 goals per game, Transfer Fee £15m
Liam Delap, Age 21 (22 in Feb), games played 51, goals scored 68, 1.33 goals per game, Transfer Fee £20m
Cameron Archer, Age 23, games played 44, goals scored 54, 1.23 goals per game, Transfer Fee £15m

Perhaps it's not as bad a fee as I initially thought. It's definitely the going rate, or just under, based on my small sample.
Don't know what your source is but it's not correct. Using Transfermarkt (which I'm assuming is accurate):

Things I noticed: Cannon has been incredibly consistent at Championship level with 0.43-0.44 goals per 90 across his three seasons (8 goals in 20 appearances for Preston in 22/23, 2 in 13 for Leicester last season and 9 in 22 for Stoke this season). Only Archer outperforms this with 0.54, bolstered by his 11 goals in 20 Middlesbrough appearances (0.72 goals/90) in 22/23.

Delap posted outstanding numbers at youth level - he's the only one with over 1.00 goals per 90 at PL2. He wasn't as prolific in the Championship but he's come into his own in the Premier League; he has more top flight goals this season than Archer has in his career. Physicality may play a part in this; Delap is 6'1" (186cm) whereas Archer is 5'9" (175cm). Cannon is 5'11" so to me may be on the small side for a PL striker.

Cannon also posted those numbers for two pretty mediocre teams in Preston and Stoke. Whilst Archer's Championship record is certainly impressive, he joined on loan in January 2023 when Boro were challenging us for automatic promotion, they had the likes of Hackney/Jones/Akpom/Giles supplying him.

I'm liking how the club seem to be working with Danny/local press properly again. This month has seen a welcome improvement in how we can trust the news he's reporting and his sources etc.
Time will tell

It's the difference between a promiscuous lass who gets it most nights but usually missionary and in bed, and one who gets just as much action but in every orifice and quite often behind the co-op or in a bus shelter.

I especially liked 'Wilder is a horrible wanker' 🤣

Prince threw toys out of the pram with Hall the first time Wilder left when Hall wrote a few things that could be seen as taking Wilder's side in the falling-out (as you would do when you've already written two books about the guy and want to leave the door open for more). The cold shoulder extended to Shield, Humperdink and local media in general, and was the start of the leaky YouTuber/Accounto/ITK era of club comms.

Great to see that's seemingly behind us.

I would have thought it will be tomorrow. Do we often have signings announced on matchday? Occasionally maybe. But these days I think the media team are tied up on matchdays with updates related to the game.

No doubt he'll be there tonight, so maybe the club have learned a bit from the BBD Directors Box leak and are just going to get ahead of it. Maybe....
