Tom Cannon....again.

Never stopped running and closing down all game, I've seen Jack Russel terriers and Nick Montgomery run around for 90 mins it didn't make them good footballers, and it doesn't make Tom Cannon a good footballer either. Too slow, too weak, we might as well have put Ryan Oné on in his position he would at least have put himself about. Instead, Wilder brings Oné on to play out wide then calls him out for making a mistake, he really can't help himself when it comes to jumping on young players.
I bet you’re gutted we won…

I’m largely on the fence regarding the lad. I see plenty of occasions when he makes a textbook forwards run and the pass doesn’t come and likewise plenty of occasions when his touch for example lets him down at key moments. But some of the criticism of him today coming from the seats behind me were frankly embarrassing. Scapegoating at its peak. At one point they expected him to be in 2 places at once.

Sounds as though you might sit near me - not in front of me by the way 😉

You know a player is just not that good when the praise he does get is for running, just being fit and running around. I think we could get someone from hallamshire harriers to run his socks off for 90 minutes and folk would think there is a football player in there.
It’s where and when you run that differs a runner from a decent footballer

Thought he had his best game for us today.

He was better than usual today which could not some his time at United up better, surely people realise its a criticism and not a compliment?

We've just beaten a very poor side with relative ease and put three past them in the process.

Our multi-million-pound striker, however, didn't score, assist, or even have a shot - he just made some runs... and it's his best game for us in the eyes of many!

The bar for Tom Cannon could not be lower, and he's had 18 months to set it😂

Cannon is always going to divide fans coz he achieves very little but is a willing runner.
There are two aspects to what I'll call his "failure" to impress with us - although to call HIM a failure is perhaps not entirely fair.
1. The Player
He's NOT a tall , strong , duel-winning , or particularly intelligent player.
BUT he makes plenty of runs which cry out for a pass on the ground , which barely ever comes.
And he has a strong shot with either foot.
So he's limited to one way of being used.
2.The stupid way we play.
We have no quick & crisp way of getting quickly up the pitch , nor apparently any plan of how to do so.
The first half today was a putrid & prime example.
We fanny around sideways trying & failing to get out of our own half and then either go back to Coops or lump a big long aerial ball up in the general direction of the opposition half ,
expecting Cannon to win it and hold it against giant defenders.
Is this what Wilder wants ?
Coz it's the definition of insanity.
It doesn't work - no matter how many times you repeat it.
And - of course - it demonstrates Cannon's limitations , which makes him look like a failure.

What Cannon needs is a quick-minded midfielder who is going to spot his run and play a nice through-ball - but that never happens.

We obviously have to play Cannon , otherwise we may as well write off hi fee and 5 years wages.
If we don't pick him , we're never gonna be able to sell him.
(I'm desperate to be rid of him).

But if we play him , it's agony to watch our misuse of him.
So it's a Catch 22.

And Wilder can't seem to coach our midfielders into solving it.
Probably because , as suggested above , the players are told
"possession is everything , don't risk a through-ball"
(so we lump it in the air or play our usual "passing around in front of opposition defenders"
- never playing line-breaking passes beyond the intended recipient which make defenders turn and gives our man something to run onto.

In short , I'm sick of watching Cannon make no impact on a game , but it's not really his fault entirely.

Don’t agree. Me, I know my football, was a youth scout at league level on and off for a couple of decades, was a extremely fit man when I was Cannons age, far fitter than him and would have run him raggied, I played football when young and believe I had a very high footballing IQ especially where/when to run and lose defenders. But never made it at football because I was not good enough with the ball.

Cannon, I’ve never seen anything other than your bog standard runs into space which is very very easily defended against as we see time and time again. But it’s all about opinions 👍

I actually thought he did a decent job today. I expect I'll get the usual 'never touched the ball' 'his job is to score goals' bollocks but no, his non stop running and closing down was good. Had a bit of spice when he fronted their big defender up and his attitude was spot on.I

it looked like Wilders game plan was for Cannon to do the running and Bamford pick the pieces up. We aren't a great team, despite winning three nil we always look safety first and negative but if Cannon can keep his energy up, he might even chip in with a goal or two assuming Wilder doesn't start chopping and changing things too much.
Wasn't his fault today. No one plays him the ball or tries to slip him in.

Let's be honest cannon is a league 1 player, he doesn't have the physical attributes or skills to be a consistent goal scorer at championship level.

We were sat behind a bloke who was suggesting we were scapegoating cannon, after getting frustrated following another pathetic attempt to hold the ball up. He's making runs blah blah blah, and apparently Bamford was as bad as cannon as he is "doing nothing as well". We pointed out Bamford has a track record of scoring and will probably go onto score, which he did twice ... Cannon continued to "make runs" without having a shot or being involved whatsoever with any of the attacking play when we had the ball.

Billy Sharp, despite having limited pace like cannon, was a striker who made "clever" runs to get into good positions ... Cannon is nothing like Sharp he goes missing during most of the games

…and ability with the ball that differs a decent footballer from a really good one ?

To all those who are saying that Cannon never has a through ball played properly, there was one occasion yesterday where he was put though on goal from about halfway in the Lincoln half. He looked like he was trying to run through treacle, which easily allowed the defender to get back and make a block. I would much rather see One given the opportunities when fully fit, that Cannon has been given.

Yup

I’ll agree with that

The places are either Stoke or Preston

Working hard whilst wearing the shirt is the minimum requirement for us fans. When a player works hard, or, appears to work hard we will give them a pass. Cannon is in the bottom few of the weekly form guide so he has to produce soon or its bench time. He is lucky that Campbell has had a big dose of 'can not be arsed' recently or he would be starting. Hopefully One will get uo to fitness and start knocking at the door for a start.
Cannon did work harder than normal yesterday before anyone slates me for making my point.

If we had a footballer that could make a forward pass into space for when Cannon makes one of his several runs in behind per game, he’d be on about 8 goals by now.

We don’t, so he isn’t. Plenty of workrate but we’re not set up, or have the personnel in midfield to make the most of his obvious strengths. Plodding, safety first football won’t generate the chances he needs to score goals.

If we continue to provide proper crosses in from wide positions, I’m sure players like Cannon will prosper.

Not sure about that ... Hamer and O'Hare were two of the most creative midfielders in the league in recent seasons and his goal tally was still pathetic with them in the team

He's just not very good

Makes you wonder why he gets a start then. The midfield system seems written in stone. Still, we’ve got Campbell and Ayew, when fit……Let’s hope Ryan One can keep fit and progress.

Neither he nor Bamford were anywhere near the spill by the keeper of BBD shot, or the mess made by lack of communication between 15 and keeper in first half. Switched off and nowhere near..
