After Saturday's performance, I think that it is right and proper to praise Simmo and Ched for their much improved performance. I have posted regular comments regarding the pair of them not being at the standard that we should expect at the Lane, but to give credit where credit is due, both were at their top perfomance levels again.

Long may it continue.

PS

It was great to see my boyhood hero again, coaching their keepers. It is just a pity that he his not involved in helping our club in some way.

The goals Ched scores could not have been scored by anyone else (bar Phillips) at the club.

He's had problems, needs management to sort his fitness/laziness out but, like so many others, we'll realise what we had when he's gone.

I'll get the popcorn...

Its a fair point, though they were signed for the Second Division, and have put in decent performances this Season in the Third Division, clearly against a Fourth Division Side, they Rock.

I can only dream of their impact in Non League

First game I've been to since August and for the first 45 I thought we'd finally seen the Evans that we've laid out so much cash for. Worryingly, he looked just as bad in the 2nd half as he did last season! Never seen a striker on a hat trick be so lethargic when it's there for the taking!

I wasn't there on Saturday but have previously thought that Ched looks lazy but probably isn't. Chris Waddle used to give the same impression.

However, a good save against a league 2 team, is just as good as the same save against Rooney. He kept a clean sheet and made some good saves, that's all you can expect, and that performance was very good for a keeper at any level.

Also, Ched's freekick would have beaten 90% of keepers in the country. So OK, it happened to be against Oxford, but it would have also gone in at any other level.

Credit where it's due I say.

I didn't think Oxford were the worst side we've seen this season, we worked hard saturday and it was an improvement, yes some players were not as good as they could have been, some of the passing wasn't exactly Barca quality to say the least, signs of improvement showing so let's embrace it and not slag them off at every opportunity

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of Ched, however it is more that he realises what he has before his career is gone.

Radio Pig didn't think it ws time for praise , when I got back in the car all they could go on about was the poor crowd (biggest in the round) and why there were no discounts (there was) oh and we beat lower league opposition and Gary Madine should be back for the massives in their massive game against high flying Morecambe.
Perople say we imagine it but no they have a definite pig bias.

You beat whats put in front of you. This is a good thing. Its Oxford United. Lets put some perspective on it.

Genuinely pleased Ched is finding the back of the net (I am, really) but he is a long way from a decent striker.

DW stated in his after match summary that Ched can get a goal out of nothing and that he doesn't necessarily need the service from other players to get them - that's bollocks.
He doesn't really use his team mates and most of his goals are just a thumping shot (his best and pretty much only decent asset) - there is no finesse or style to him, limited pace, relatively light weight and poor control. When he has to think about anything he invariably fails. If he reacts to a situation presented to him then he can be effective - but that is a random factor that will limit him throughout his career.

Fair play to Ched, good reactions for the first - after a good flick on to Cresswell - when the ball came back to him. A good, hard, low, drilled shot finding the back of the net.
Second was a blasted free kick under the wall - the lads in the wall jumped - so if they did their homework OK they would have just stayed still and the shot would have been blocked.
I have never seen Ched curl one to the top corner - all his free kicks are the same and he relies on the wall not doing its job.

As stated earlier, with two goals in 7 minutes early in the first half I am really surprised that he didn't go all out for a hat trick. Cannot imagine Keith Edwards sitting on a brace against opposition like Oxford in the cup.

Pleased he is doing better but far from a World beater and far from the sort of player that will fire you to a promotion.
His crossing is suspect, his one on one technique is suspect (although there is a rumour that 2 on 1 is more effective), his vision is negligible and he seems to drift right out of a game.

Contrast that with Sam Vokes - thought he was a decent player when on loan to us last year - strong, good link up play, aware of other players around him, eye for goal, clever touches etc - scored a brace for Wales at the weekend. Notice that Gary Speed isn't touching Ched with a barge pole these days. Even heard him described as a "former Welsh international" on the radio Saturday at 23 years of age. That has to say a lot about his development.

Gary Speed may have been told not to pick him pending his trial

Ched finally finding his form ? I was one of his supporters early doors but Saturday was, believe it or not, his 84th appearance for us. From what I've seen this season his awareness is no better even at this level and let's not forget, the opposition on Saturday were another level down again. He will score decent individual goals because that's the kind of player he is but to me, he's not a team player and we need to get shut asap, for financial reasons alone.

But wasn't the "silver cloud" of our relegation that the overpaid superstars would all be on their way last summer and we could start afresh?
We approach January with the same no marks on board and no sign of them moving anywhere. Ched is just ONE of the problems I'm afraid.

I'm sure Ched would have moved on but for his 'other issues' during the Summer. Squinny will be off in January and the rest, we're pretty much stuck with although freeing up, say £30K a week, and banking £1M plus for those two would make a massive difference to us if we offloaded the pair. The good point about Ched scoring again is that it might remind a club or two that they desperately need him :)

I thought part Cheds bail conditions were that he couldn't enter Wales.

Praise .................. not a fookin chance !
Play decent week in week out .......then alreight ......but just a bit ......these donkey's get paid way too much for what they do.

If we (self included) are quick to complain about players who aren't performing well, then it is not unreasonable to praise them when they do well. That re-enforces the message that they are appreciated when they play better. This then increases confidence and the desire to play well for their fans. Constant criticism will only destroy confidence and their willingness to play well for the United fans.

Being a proper supporter means supporting the players to do well for the team which in turn bring rewards for the supporters. We can help to improve the performance of the players we have since we cannot afford to spend much on others to replace them.

>then it is not unreasonable to praise them when they do well
thing is.. they're not doing very well are they?

It's that sort of namby pamby attitude that got us in he third division in the first place.
Accept mediocrity and that's what you end up with.
Sub standard players on unrealistic wages relative to their ability.
Bless their little cotton socks.

Feckin grow some. They are in the big world now FFS.
Feckin apologist.

I thought Hodgy's statement was pretty reasonable, unlike the shitty reply full of crass bollox.

According to Super Pig

I haven't spoken to any Unitedites who saw their performance against Oxford that didn't think that they were MUCH improved.

Perhaps there might be a clue in Super Pig's name as to where his loyalties lay.
