Meant to be a good atmosphere there Nic? Is that still the case?
Yes, the last time that I went it was still good. Italian football atmosphere is a lot more sedate than it was 10 to 20 yrs ago. The local authorities, police & FA have clamped down on the a lot of the wilder things that went on. It used to be an unwritten rule that the main curva was self policing. That's led to me seeing some right crazy shit, especially in Rome.
Florence would be the city/ground that I would recommend firstly for a long weekend if someone wanted to go to an Italian match. Ryanair fly to Pisa from east mids and Manchester, and then it's a short & cheap train journey (£8 and about 1 hr) to Florence. Other than the tower & a couple of buildings, Pisa isn't worth a long visit, they have a well supported 2nd division team that you could shoehorn into a visit. Everyone basically walks from the railway station, up the road to the tower, queues, takes a photo pretending to hold it up and then goes home.
If you went, chances are that you could do two games from Fiorentina, Empoli, Pisa, Siena & Livorno. Also in March there's an international youth tournament in Viareggio, which is a beach resort nearby, if you're a proper footballing anorak.
Florence is a cracking city, small historic and atmospheric, but can be busy from Easter onwards, you can also stay outside nearer the coast and visit the cinque terre by train, which are 5 very beautiful fishing villages that stretch northwards up the liguria/tuscan coast.
