As per my earlier post, I won't be judging Speed any differently than I would an experienced manager. Other options were available but Speed was chosen by United ahead of them, so should be judged on his own merits. Are we expected to write this season off and the £300+ we spent on our season tickets because the club gambled on a rookie?
I don't think anyone expected a promotion push this season given the state of the squad and Blackwell in charge. Did you?
Kevin McCabe (23/04/10) "Hey, look, I say to you all, we’re gonna do our darndest to get ready for next season, for yet another promotion push. There will be no stone left unturned to get it right, if we have to adjust wage bills, it’s not something that’s a big drama, it’s recognition that the games changed a wee bit. I’ve made comments before, you know, the last few years, so don’t worry about it, this is a club that still strives to succeed. We’re not going backwards and sometimes I don’t see media coverage, you know from the newspapers or you know, from Radio Sheffield, but I suspect there a bit of a myth going around. This club pushes forward, every fan of Sheffield United must recognise that, top tables as keen as mustard to bring success..."
Well I know at least one person who expected a promotion push this season!
Did I expect a promotion push with our current squad? No.
Should it be possible for a club with our resources to reach the play-offs this season? Yes, Burnley and Blackpool proved it's possible with much less.
Should it be a valid excuse that the we've chosen a manager who needs time to learn how to do the job? In my opinion, no.
