Thoughts on Yesterday

I'm not suggesting we should accept long-term failure. Unless we're looking dead certs for relegation then Speed should remain in the job tweaking the squad so we're ready for a promotion push next season. I can't see us doing it this season, unless we get a massive influx of cash in the next week.

What shouldn't happen is that people, like a few on this board have seemingly written him off already. That's not right at all.

I agree that it's too early to be making any judgements or comments about Speed. However, if we'd appointed an experienced manager like O'Driscoll, Mowbray or Phil Brown, would you be happy to allow them a full season for tweaking before making a serious play-off challenge next season?

Makes it a completely different scenario don't you think?

Yes i would given the threadbare nature of the squad, and the demand from the fans for a better style of football.

I think the above highlight along the need not fall into the pit the pigs are in by sacking 'em all' means we need to take a step back and see what happens, start to enjoy it again as fans and be able to take a few defeats on the chin if that is what happens.

By all means express an opinion but some things said on here since Sunday are

I'm speechless.

As per my earlier post, I won't be judging Speed any differently than I would an experienced manager. Other options were available but Speed was chosen by United ahead of them, so should be judged on his own merits. Are we expected to write this season off and the £300+ we spent on our season tickets because the club gambled on a rookie?

I don't think anyone expected a promotion push this season given the state of the squad and Blackwell in charge. Did you?

Kevin McCabe (23/04/10) "Hey, look, I say to you all, we’re gonna do our darndest to get ready for next season, for yet another promotion push. There will be no stone left unturned to get it right, if we have to adjust wage bills, it’s not something that’s a big drama, it’s recognition that the games changed a wee bit. I’ve made comments before, you know, the last few years, so don’t worry about it, this is a club that still strives to succeed. We’re not going backwards and sometimes I don’t see media coverage, you know from the newspapers or you know, from Radio Sheffield, but I suspect there a bit of a myth going around. This club pushes forward, every fan of Sheffield United must recognise that, top tables as keen as mustard to bring success..."

Well I know at least one person who expected a promotion push this season!
Did I expect a promotion push with our current squad? No.
Should it be possible for a club with our resources to reach the play-offs this season? Yes, Burnley and Blackpool proved it's possible with much less.
Should it be a valid excuse that the we've chosen a manager who needs time to learn how to do the job? In my opinion, no.

We’re not going backward

I dont think we are going Backwards, Backwards is there, over your shoulder, behind you, thats Backwards.

We are going Downwards, there, under your feet, look down ........ aaaaaaaaarrrrgghhhh

In a word 'Yes'

Completely agree with that. The appointment should always be made on the basis that its the best person available to do the job. I am hoping and praying that Speed succeeds, and he will have my full support unless or until he gives me reason to withdraw it. But the fact that he is a rookie shouldn't deflect from the fact that he is the manager of the club, and he must be judged on that basis, and no other.

Having said all of that, I would certainly have given any new manager the rest of this season before I began to judge them, given what they were inheriting, not in terms of playing staff in my opinion because I think we are only 2 or 3 players away from having a useful squad which is currently misfiring and underperforming, but in terms of an ingrained culture which will take some shifting.

I am happy with the Calve signing, it will be very interesting to see who else he brings in. I am sure he must recognise that the squad is screaming out for an injection of pace up front and in midfield, lets see if he addresses that. If he does it will tell us far more about how the rest of the season is going to go than Sunday's performance did.

As Sothall points out, the club's hierarchy did expect that - that's pretty much why they sacked him.

I'm not sure what to make of Sunday. OK, Speedo's only been in the job 2 minutes, but it's not like he's a complete newcomer. He should know the players but I wonder whether that's part of the problem?
Most disappointing for me was the attitude. In his pre-match interview Strachan was clearly worried about the new manager effect, yet at no stage did we seem to want to go for it - even when it was obvious Boro were no great shakes.
I'd like to know what was said at half-time in both dressing rooms 'cos Boro seemed to improve and we didn't.
I hope it's just a post-Blackwell malaise and we can start the upturn with a win on Saturday!

I don't think we have the personnel to able to push on a level.

Players of the ilk of Johnny Ertl, Mark Yeates, Ched Evans or Andy Taylor are quite clearly not good enough for this level. Not Speed's fault but a legacy of the previous manager and the mismanagement of the club from boardroom level.

are you serious?

Ertl played very well and i was impressed with him pre-season.
Evans again, pre-season you could see he's working hard to find the form that he knows he's capable of.

the other two need to prove themselves
