Decent until Ward went off ... (should have saved him another 2 weeks !) , after that it was just huff and puff and very little flair and invention ... Little apart , Nyron looked a prem player , Quinn was decent and I thought Morgs handled the pressure from the away end well.

Today was a taste of next season perhaps ? , thats if we still have Quinn , Monty , Morgs etc !

It seems Mr Judge is taking our demise as CCC promotion contender worse than most !

I agree with your sentiment totally. That said, if we can build around;

Kenny,
Morgan,
Williamson,
Henderson (I know)
Sharp
Yeates
Ward
Little
Geary
And even on his day, Quinn.

I think we still have the makings of a reasonable team - yet the additions will be crucial. Let's hope there's plenty in the wages kitty, once dross like Evans have removed their pile.

Gotta be honest mate, I live near Norwich and watched Ched when he was there, awesome player when used PROPERLY, KB hasn't done that all season hence nothing to talk about, if we played football the way it should be played rather than this lump and bump rubbish, evans and sharp could be a very good pairing next season, keep wardy fit on the right and sign a decent left winger and things could be lookin up for us next year. We have to keep the faith, the constant booing and calls for Blackwell out is not helping anyone at all, see what the summer brings, give him 10 games at the start of next season to prove himself, if he doesn't, then obviously get rid of him and hope to god we can bring in O'Driscoll, more than proved he can create a decent side on a limited budget over at Donny, and gets the best out of Billy!

To me, shouting "Blackwell out!" is not accelerating the return of good times. It's purely destructive behaviour which negatively affects the players.

Have you written to McCabe or Birch (I seem to recall you saying you would)? Who have you suggested replace our current management? That's constructive behaviour.

You're not the only one who's tired of long ball football, but I also think Blackwell has done a decent job in other respects.

So what mustn't happen now is change without a fully considered plan for what comes next. We're in a predicament whoever is in charge, and if we make a fresh start we need the right man to be available. I really believe the wrong choice could see things get worse.

JD
I agree with most of what you say JD. Of course it is easy to sack a manager. The difficult bit is appointing a better one.

In our case the majority of fans, I'm sure you'll agree, want to see the back of Blackwell. The season ticket sales are instructive and most people I know are citing Blackwell, not recession, as the bar to a renewal. That, of itself, should make change inevitable.

My personal view [surprise] is that he is a very poor manager with little understanding of the game and is well out of his comfort zone with any style or method beyond the rudimentary.

He fears good football, probably because he was rubbish at it himself. He freezes on the big occasion [witness his timid approach to both his Championship play-off finals with us and Weeds].

I'm quite certain that there are managers out there and available who would be far more adept at rebuilding our decimated team than this former semi-pro reserve keeper who has achieved precious little as a manager and whose public pronouncements often betray his insecurity and illustrate his lack of judgement.

My choice is, and has been consistently, the excellent Steve Coppell. Maybe he wouldn't take the job but if you don't ask....

Shaun O'Driscoll would also be an excellent choice.

Every problem is an inverted opportunity. What better chance, given the pitiful state of our playing squad, to remodel ourself and start to play to a style that is actually pleasing on the eye as well as effective. We can't be Barcelona or Arsenal but a nod in that direction would be refreshing. Many teams have shown it's possible at this level: Fulham, Reading, West Brom to name but a few. We are bigger than all of them.

I shall be renewing my two season tickets next week, though one of them will be an empty seat while Blacko is at the club. My letter to McCabe will follow in tandem. I'll send you a copy if you wish!

Genuine question. I'm always fascinated how strikers can perform in one team and not in another. Without resorting to the obvious 'well, they play football and we don't...' or 'its our crap manager', I'm really interested to know how Norwich played him. Was he as a target, off the last defender, dropping deeper and making runs...? What did they do that made him effective?

This also applies to Billy. There was lots of talk that he's only effective with the ball played to feet in the penalty area, but he does a lot of channel running for Donny, and has scored quite a few from the edge or outside the box, or running onto through balls, which is what he's not supposed to be able to do. Where are our tactical masters who can give us a clear view of what exactly the difference is..?

I'm here Duncs.

I honestly think it is to do with teh quality of the football. When he runs a channel for Donny I imagine he has support. He doesn't have to work miracles. He has an easy lay off available. They retain possession waiting for the right time to play a decent ball for a shooting/headed chance. For me it's about the team shape and their ability on the ball. Obviously they have weaknesses in other areas but in general their players are either better in possession or they have a manager who can get a team to work together in the way he wants them to.

Evans - not sure.

would you like to borrow my testicles for a day mart? see what it feels like to be a real man?

Aww diddums, are we all upset because we tried to sulk and throw a strop but didn't get any backing? Grow up you little girl, you're making youself look a prize twat

Dunc, in the few games that I have seen Donny play this year, Billy has the ball played to his feet and very rarely did Donny send lofted balls into the box. Another point of consideration was that the midfielders, and on occasions the defenders, attempt to play the ball through the middle of the oppositions defence with Billy waiting on the last man. I think this is something we don't do and possibly something that the likes of Wardy may have prospered from?

The thing that sticks out by a mile when watching Billy, is that he seems happy to be playing for them. Maybe the expectation on him was too much at BDTBL, maybe he didn't like the role or maybe he didn't get on with KB and Sam Ellis?

Well, compared to last Sunday, anything would be.

No, I thought it was a good game and United definitely tried to close down at every opportunity. What a different defence without Seip & Bartlett.

MOM ? Nozzer, although Quinny was good. Nobody was terrible.

Surprised that Barnsley weren't as dirty as usual. Ref. served them well.

Not too bad.

Again, in isolation it wasn't a bad performance but nobody cares anymore. I remember last years game literally tearing my hair out in the final ten minutes against them but yesterday was just like watching two neutral teams for me. Maybe it's just me but i don't think so.

I thought Nosworthy, Little, Cresswell and Morgan were our stand out players. Yeates needs to learn to beat the first man and pass to Andy Taylor. Andy Taylor needs to learn to not look like a scared rabbit and pass to Mark Yeates. Darius Henderson needs to learn to not react to a bit of aggro. Kyle Bartley needs to learn to get used to the bench.

I really enjoyed it yesterday. We played reasonably well and there was plenty of incident on and off the pitch. Two assumptions - the lad on the Kop was a dingle and feds don't have medicals any more. I've never seen a copper as fat as the one who 'ran' towards the trouble from the Bramall Lane end - pure comedy gold.

Thought Nosworthy, Morgan, Quinn, Montgomery and Cresswell did well. Little was the standout performer. Henderson looked disinterested again and far too many moves broke down with Yeates.

Barnsley proved me right - very negative in approach, far more direct than us and totally lacking in attacking flair. Robins will have to improve things next season or the dingles will be revolting. A warning to us that the grass isn't always greener manager-wise. I'd still replace Blackwell, it won't necessarily be the magic bullet though.

Very interesting how many Barnsley players made a point of going across to Morgan at the end of the game. Darren Moore in particular gave him a big hug (he doesn't do any other sort). That's got to raise questions about the actions of Barnsley FC, Patrick Cryne, Simon Davey and the MPs who signed the EDM. If the Barnsley players clearly don't hold a grudge against our glorious leader, then why the hate campaign from the higher echelons at Oakwell?

All in all, I'm just starting to enjoy my football again. This season has been both an opportunity missed (if we'd beaten Scunthorpe I'd still fancy us for the play-offs) and a huge transition undergone. I suppose my biggest criticism is that we haven't made any real progress towards building next season's squad. Why have 2 'massive rebuilding jobs'? Couldn't we have at least tried to combine them into one?

Oh well, onwards and upwards. Roll on August 7th.

Cooper, maybe so. I think Robson gave him enough opportunities, although the majority of his play was chasing the ball down to the corner flag. You are right, Warnock clearly didn't have much time for him either.

Whatever the reason, the lad can perform, sadly its for other teams and not us. I guess we all wanted him to be the hero that I think BDTBL desperately needs, and I'm still not convinced that he couldn't be - but I fear this will not happen under the current management team.

They mixed it up, he was almost played how Rooney is for Man Utd, obviously not to the same level though! He ran round the park and looked for good areas up top, often played on the last defender, he played with some freedom, and scored a few crackers, will never forget his 30 yarder against Cardiff, would love him to reproduce that at BDTBL, you wouldn't be disappointed!

I think the issue is we don't play football often enough, I'm not asking for us to try and play like Barca or Arsenal, but when we get it down and knock it about we do look a half decent side, when we played Palace before xmas we played most of the game that way and looked a really good side, more than capable of being in the play offs, all gone tits up though when we panic and just smash long balls around like a league 2 side!

I'm delighted to agree with Coops that Quinny played well yesterday. How refreshing to see him have a pause on the ball and use it cleanly and effectively. I do hope we've seen the last if the panic stricken, bombscare, red hot coal 'elpiton'. If so, he might yet revive a flagging career. I must say the Barnsley midfield were as poor as I've seen at this level and their front two powder-puff and anonymous. I remembered why selling Andy Gray was a good idea.

I don't think Monty shone yesterday. Maybe Willo and Quinn will be the starting pair for next season unless Harper finds his Reading boots but I fear they are worn out beyond repair.

Ronny the Anagram had his best game for us. He looked solid and the usual feeling that a howler was only seconds away subsided. I give him MotM by a whisker by a whisker from Inspector Blake.

Simonsen looks my sort of goalie: big and commanding but agile with it.

All in all it was a decent performance and we were the better side by some distance.

Sadly it's goals that count and most of ours fell off the back of a lorry on the M18. Bad driving, Mr. Blackwell, you've failed your HGV.

It wasn't too bad at all yesterday and on most other days we would've won by 1 or 2 goals to nil. We just didn't take our chances. Defensively we looked a lot better though, and hopefully Morgan and Nosworthy can stay together for the rest of the season.

Henderson, again, didn't look fit. I'm one of his biggest fans but yesterday was probably his worst game for us. He looked off the pace.

Ratings:

Simonsen - 7
Connolly - 6
Morgan - 7.5
Nosworthy - 8
Taylor - 7
Little - 8
Montgomery - 7
Quinn - 7
Yeates - 6.5
Cresswell - 5.5
Henderson - 4.5

Why have 2 'massive rebuilding jobs'? Couldn't we have at least tried to combine them into one?

I think it is (and has been) one long ongoing task. When Forest dropped down to Div2 the consensus was that they were hamstrung by underperforming players on big contracts who simply couldn't be gotten rid of.

We did a lot of good clear-out work in the summer, but it worries me that Ched and Naysmith are neither use nor ornament at the moment, and yet they chew up a vast slice of the budget.

Naysmith will be gone in the summer. Ched is a long term problem.
