The main reason this team DESERVES promotion to me is that we've earnt it and we've shown a willingness to learn and learn quick.
We've earnt this promotion, not bought it. We deserve it more than any other side in the division.
I'm currently sat watching Villa v Leeds and you see some of the players on display, the resources of these clubs and their 'stature' if that counts for owt? You see Hernandez, Grealish, McGinn, Abraham, Bamford, Clarke, etc etc and think, our lot have finished above all of these. You look at the amount Derby have spent, the money West Brom have and their experience, the amount Boro have spent and the fact that they have gone for it in the transfer market, and we've finished above all of them. Then there are sides like those on the outskirts of the city who have spent shed loads and don't even come close to challenging, performing consistently, or having a DNA.
What does it come down to? Ultimately two very shrewd people at the helm, who have been willing and able to learn, and adapt - and fast. The initial tonking by Boro early last season, we then learnt from that and became more resolute defensively, the slow start against Swansea this season, the decision to ship out Leonard and Evans and bring in Norwood, the mistakes against Villa at 3-0 and learning to defend heroically against the 'big boys' (WBA, Leeds), learning to take our chances when we had them (Dowell, Basham anyone?).
We learnt, we quickly adapted to championship football...and then we began to excel at it. Wilder and Knill have analysed every short coming and found a way to address it, and on a limited budget. The funny fact is, we had to learn to fast, because arguably this side would get picked apart by premier league squads if we hadn't gone up.
If anyone deserves this promotion, for not simply throwing a chequebook at it, it's us. And only Wilder's second ever season at this level....
Simply superb.
