Things I learnt today

When I saw the lineup on way to game and realised that we were playing 4-4-2 I was excited thinking that it would work, and in the end it didn't work but thankfully it didn't cost us as we still won the game.

Looking at Middlesbrough game, knowing that we can't drop every player who had a bad game as we'd end up playing a lot of the reserves and kids. But I would drop a few players who had bad games.

Although I would normally drop Robbo and keep Anel, Robbo played better than Anel, not by much but noticeably better and keeps his shirt.

------------------Cooper
Clarke-Holding-Robbo-Burrows
-----------Souza--------Peck
-------------------O'Hare
JRS---------------------------------Hamer
-----------------Campbell

Though I thought Cannon had a decent 2nd half, after both him and Campbell were largely anonymous for the 1st half, Campbell gets the shirt for Boro.

I don't think Burrows and Clarke played well, though Clarke did improve a little in the 2nd half.

Even though he was playing out of position on the right for large parts of the game, BBD was off the pace today, Choudhury didn't look great either, especially compared to Peck when he came on.

When did a section of our fans get like this seriously, it's fucking embarrassing, we have won more points than anyone in the league, joint with Leeds. Yes that was one of, if not the worst performance of the season but fuck me, where's this entitled bollox we should just walk over teams, walk the league, sack managers when we're in an automatic spot. Have any of you cunts watched this club for the last 100 years. I honestly don't get it. What are any of you bringing towards supporting the football club. Just fuck off.
In reality, a club like Portsmouth should not be giving us a football lesson (apart from finishing skills) and then being obliged to listen to a manager in denial.
As fans, we are entitled to complain about that. Sacking the manager is too much too soon, but he has to accept responsibility for the tactical ineptitude, and the team selection! By doing neither, his post match remarks seem to lay the blame on the players. He trained them, he picked them. He is responsible.

TBF he did, he came out and said in the post match press and said we were terrible.

I would be interested to know who you think we could realistically get who would be preferable to Wilder.
Takes a bit of vision and research but they are out there, look at le bris at sunland he came from poor French side but has them playing great football, sausage at S6 came from nowhere and is a good coach, Farioli at Ajax was noticed for the job he did in the Turkish league. We shouldn’t be looking at Dyche’s etc or insisting on British ffs. Just because we’ve not heard of them doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

I understand the sentiment, when United are actually top of the 6 game form league for the division and as you say have as many points as any team in the league, having undertaken (still in the middle of) a complete squad rebuild. In addition 3 or 4 youth team prospects have been brought through for significant 1st team action.

In term of things learned today and accepting that we were shit.

BBD had a shocker defensively and perhaps shouldn't be asked to play a role that requires that - he lost his man for the goal and the open net they missed.
Anel/Robbo looks vulnerable - we need a big strong leader in there. Neither can complain if Holding starts the next game.
Hamer is our key man (I hardly learned this today, but confirmed again). Play him central and forward in whatever formation we settle on.
JRS - I've struggled to warm to him, but his goal was very Billy Sharp-esque. Great movement to find that space in the 6 yard box. Bodes well for his career.

Cannon - like every CF we've picked all season, he's struggled to get involved. I'd suggest we need to look beyond the individuals on that. I think it's a tough role, playing the way we play. Despitte that, in 3 games so far, he's been the match winner in one of them (Derby, with a great turn and cross) and played a role in our winner today. I really hope a few on here end up with egg on their faces regards to him

Defensively when Souza and Choudhury have played together a while I can see us being solid. The issue with both of those players in the centre of the field is complete lack of creativity going forward.

Peck a player who would probably be still playing U21 stuff now and again made all the difference yesterday because he looked to progress the ball forward. 3 points but a lot to think about.

Things I have learnt:
Our hopes of going up revolve around Gus.With him we have a great chance, without him, none.
Sydi Peck is already one hell of a player, and deserves to start against Boro. His energy and sheer will to win made us look like a different team when he came on.
The new players need a few more games, before we should start slagging them off. However, the players that got us to this position should start eg Peck, O’Hare, Gilchrist, and the new players brought on as subs.At the moment until they are match fit, and used to the way we play they are no better, than what we have. But will provide much needed back up as the season progresses.
Some of our fans don’t realise the good times when they arrive.Strange because we’ve had our fair share of bad ones.Look at the table this morning and get behind em against Boro.We do make a difference.

There is much to agree with here, especially BBD who was particularly poor defensively. Murphy for Portsmouth showed what a wide player should be capable of at this level and BBD was nowhere near that. He needs game time
but his time at Southampton seems to have had a negative effect on him, he certainly needs to improve to warrant a starting position.
Both Anel and Robinson struggle against strong, good in the air forwards. Not sure we can risk starting Holding as he's hardly played for two years.
Thought that even Cooper with his ball distribution was off it yesterday, and regularly put players under immediate pressure.

Holding has played every week for the 2nd string at Palace so has plenty minutes in his legs
Think you might find that he has started 6 games for the U21 in 4 months.
Not trained with the Palace first team at all.
He might be physically fit, but he lacks first team competitive football.

Given that we had BBD on the right yesterday as opposed to an actual RW like Rak-Sakyi or Brooks could suggest that both of them might not have been doing enough to get in the team.

CW has previously alluded to Brooks not doing enough in training to start in the team.

Hopefully JRS justifying a good performance from the bench with a goal might give him the confidence to kick on and get his place back in the team, we've seen it already with Brewster getting starts after having good games as a sub.

Same could go for Peck based off of yesterday's performance.

Totally on the manager
I do laugh at the 'manager needs to be held accountable' type comments.

Every single week, sometimes two or even three times a week. There are few jobs in the world where the manager is in the firing line as constantly.

Let it go mate

football has moved on, time we do as a club
But others are claiming we need 'hard working' Sheffield United players with the time that we need to stick with what we've always done.

Who should I believe?

Both true but one will see us stuck in the mud the other would see us progress

Fair comment.
