People keep questioning how many we can have, in various threads.

In the EFL, we can have an unlimited number of loans. The rules are different to the PL.

We can only name 5 loanees in the match day squad though.

You aren't restricted to 2 PL loans, and you're not restricted to only 1 loan from the same club... Although I read somewhere that it's a maximum of 2... So Shea Charles could still sign on loan for example, even though we have BBD.

This needs pinning on every single sub-forum. It doesn’t seem to matter how many times it’s reiterated, people still don’t seem to realise

I forgot to add.

All loanees, regardless of age, must form part of the 25-man squad. Whereas our "owned" players under 21 are exempt.

So if you have 10 players on loan, you only have 15 places left in your 25-man squad... But, you can only name 5 loans in your match day squad, so you're effectively reducing your squad size, as 5 of your 25 man squad can't be in the match day every game

There might not be a limit but I can’t see & player or loaning club being too happy with a loan move which involves not being a part of the match day squad ? Most have an option on a recall if they aren’t being used , not to mention our outlay in wasted wages ???
Basically pretty pointless?

Depends on the situation I guess. Hypothetically, if we were able to replace say Gilchrist with a clear upgrade on loan, especially if there was a contractual option to purchase, we might do so and Chelsea might prefer us to continue paying his wages. Wouldn’t be ideal for Gilchrist himself in this hypothetical scenario, but in the upside we’d have him in the squad if the upgrade got injured.

Matt’s point about squad size is probably more pertinent unless we were going down the route of more team rotation, with its benefits of less fatigue and its downsides of a lack of consistency.

Surely loans should only be 1st pick players, not squad players.
Up to 5 loans seems about right, anymore is a bad reflection on the squad and youth set up
