It needs upping. Simple as that.

I’m fed up of ‘wages’ being an excuse for not signing any fucker, we have just received 12mil plus if reports are to be believed for David Brooks.

We are weaker than last season as it stands with a questionable and aging frontline and struggling for depth in defence too.
Desperate for reinforcements but everyone rumoured is supposed to be on loan (did we not learn anything in 2010?) and even then it’s ‘wages’ that are the problem.

If they’re going to upset the Apple cart - pay those deserving of more money, more money. Then you won’t upset the ‘team spirit’ by signing your Scott Hogans and Sam Gallaghers.

I’m fed up of using excuses, pay the going rate and give us half a chance this season. The negative vibe around the place right now is palpable - Portugal made it even worse. I’ve seen it all first hand.

Have i missed a revelations interview with wilder, maybe a sit down with piers morgan where he revealed he is being completley hamstrung by our budget?

I mean, i heard him say he was delighted with the budget a month or so back, he said the same in portugal but all of a sudden, hes pissed off by it and its holding us back and going to lead to immediate relegation this season.

In fact, can we start a petition to just play in league one this season?

He can be as delighted as he wants - he wants to get some players in

Do we actually know that that is the issue or is it just everyone on here listening to rumours and drawing conclusions because we haven’t signed anyone?

I ask because I genuinely don’t know if I’ve missed something

I share the frustration but what did the club lose in the promotion season, over 5 million? And getting on for 8 million the year before. Someone has to keep picking up that tab unless there's a windfall like Brooks every once in a while.

You're dead right, and we're at risk of being left behind just when we should be poised to make a real push for promotion.

That said, the maths makes for pretty uncomfortable reading.

Say your upper limit on wages is 15k per week. Pitiful for the level we want to be at, yes. But say we increase it to 25k (still behind many of the top clubs in the division): the first guy we sign on those wages adds 1.25 million to the annual wage bill. For each of the other top players at the club who subsequently demand to match his wages, a cool half million each. This is at a club that's apparently losing up to 10 million a year already.

Gallagher’s wages are a stumbling block
Ok thanks must have missed that.

As you probably know more than us is the difference huge or bridgeable ?

The bigger question I guess is, is this symptomatic of a lack of ambition from United or is it more the completely ridiculous wages being paid to unproven young players by PL clubs? (Or both I guess is the other option)

There is a windfall.

It's a disgrace isn't it? they don't get paid overtime for working weekends or if a game goes over 90 mins.

If we have a wage structure & budget that is comparable to the bottom five in the division/top 2 in League 1, and we continue to purchase players from League 1, due to the fact they are all we can afford, and despite CW & AK's best endeavors, we will over time increase the likelihood of ending up back in League 1. Our better players will leave, the ones that remain will age & retire and their places will be taken by Southend and Charlton's finest. Where once there was beauty, there will be decay.

I would much prefer the owner/s of the club come out in a public forum and admit this, as opposed to the annual nonsense that gets talked in the August & January transfer windows about money being available, and deals not getting over the line and nasty agents. Honesty & transparency.

I don’t think it’s a lack of ambition. Gallagher is thought to be on £22-24k a week, Hogan about £35k. Which is why the loan market is favourable as there’s leeway for the parent club to perhaps contribute a % and make them a) more affordable and b) more in line with the structure in place

Upping the wages is option 1, a better option is to scout in Ligue 2, Eredivisie, Danish Superliga etc. Wages in the Championship and even league one are way higher than the wages at most teams in the eredivisie, Danish Superliga etc. Just needs to be more creative.
I agree - but we both know that won’t happen

No, we didn't, I think we got a third of that, with two more staged payments to come.

Cuts down on the money for fees. Good idea but the thinking has to be joined up at the end.

To be fair he's on too much.

As much as I agree we need to increase the amount of money we give over to wages, and as much as I know that there's naff all we can do about it, these are ridiculous sums of money and arguably they're probably not worth it when it comes to their records compared to the strikers we already have on half or less of the money.

Let's face it, it was the owners decision not to compete in the wage market after Robson that took
us down last time.

So what's changed ?

We've actually received £4m for Brooks.

And where exactly is this large amount of money coming from??, if we try that, we won't be buying anyone, nevermind paying anyonelse, I understand your frustrations, were all a little frustrated by things, and it's easy to point out, what everyone already knows, but whilever there's all the shit with the owners, nothing will change.

I’m content with that. There’s a lot of good players who’ll be available at cut price with clubs struggling with FFP and we COULD take advantage if we could afford the wages

Yes but as football debts are more or less guaranteed, you broker similar deals for incoming players.
Dependent on what's happening regarding the ownership of the club, we know roughly what united are set to receive for Brooks, doesn't mean any of it will definitely go back into the team, does it.

really? is he 'that' good?

Forrestgumpsfairy could be worth a punt then.....
